East tx skier, you can change the title if you want, but it's a lot more G-rated than I wanted to write!!!

(4/04/06 - VENTURA, CA) - A teacher who kept a 40 mm shell on his desk as a paperweight blew off part of his hand when he apparently used the object to try to squash a bug, authorities say.

Ok so question here. who finds a 40 mm shell while hunting???

= 1.5" that's a military cartridge...

I suspect that if he had it, it wasn't from finding it in the woods.

From my engineering school days. 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. 10 mm per 1 cm. Thus, 25.4 mm per inch. Regardless, that's one big a$$$$ shell.

every time I see your nick, I think of the dog's paw joke:toast:

A dog with his leg wrapped in bandages hobbles into a saloon. He sidles up to the bar and announces: "I'm lookin' fer the man that shot my paw."

LOL! Here lately I feel like my paws have been shot off......

Man those A10's are bad ***! I wish the old timers that worked those 105's had a few of those back in the day.

Could have been from finding it in the woods. During "exersizes", I would often find large shells (spent, not live) out in the fields...I'm sure hunters frequented the same fields...

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfsihness and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And i will strike down upon thee with great vengence and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when i lay my vengeance upon you"

I am in the U.S. Army (18 years now)..... A 40mm, 5 inch long shell, is a M203 round.... Or possible a MK-19 round... If they are saying this is a bullet, they are wrong... The "slug" would be too heavy if it was a conventional "bullet type" round.... Their would not be enough powder in the round to "fly" And I hardly think he found this is the woods while hunting...

It take 33 meters for the round (M203/MK-19) to spin, before the grenade portion will arm itself... What blew up in the guys hand was the proplusion charge in the round... Yea, these things have a range of almost 1200 meters... (on a good day)... I was in Iraq for a while... The round itself, without exploding, can punch through a car door easily... Seen it done!!!

The Dumma$$ is lucky he did not hurt himself worse, or any of his students... But if I was a law enforcment guy their, I'd investigate a little more... We'd he get the round, and how....

Just a thought???

In order to be considered for the Darwin Award, the subject has to completely remove himself from the gene pool. He could have re-aimed and been a candidate.
