View Full Version : Should we Link the FAQ on the Home Page?

So I've been known to say, "have you read the F.A.Q. (http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=5427&page=1&pp=30) thread?" Often times, despite that fact that there are probably 20,000 links to it on this board (considering the people who have kindly put the link in their signature), some people were not aware of it.

It's purpose was give people who might be new to the site something that might answer some of the more frequently asked questions. Okay, so get on with it, we all know the purpose of the FAQ thread.

I'd love to see a link to this thread posted on the home page. While I started the thread, everyone is obviously welcome to contribute to it if they feel like they've got something good (and boat-related) to add that's not in there yet. There's already an FAQ link, but it's more related to how to use the site than specific to boat questions.

So do you think that we ought to have a link to this thread on the Team Talk homepage?

Nah, I personally like when people ask questions. Even when they are the same ones over and over.... Maybe I am alone on this one.

No sarcastic "smilie"??? :D

I think it would be beneficial to have it linked on the homepage, but I am not sure how many newbies, or the like, would click on it...

Good poll Doug, will get a lot of newcomers off on the right foot!

As far as your poll posting abilities, we all realize you are new to all this high tech stuff and you will catch on soon!
Why not start a poll on whether the "UMP Option" should be added to every new poll posted?
or
Why not start a poll as to Questions asked about UMP's mental stability being added to FAQ Thread?  :wavey:HEY!!!!!!!

Hey you turncoat! you were a strong advocate of the UMP option on polls. We have to stick together here NO1, your on my cabinet. Now would you have been such a strong supporter of my election to be Grand High Exhaulted Mystic Ruler of all TMC polls if you thought I was mentally unstable? ;) WE all know the nice guys in the white furniture van with the white suits are coming to pick me up to take me furniture shopping! so lets forget all this crazy talk.

I forgive you Eastie on teh UMP option, please try to remember in the future as it makes me look bad when polls go on without one. Its not good for my Nielson ratings, or whatever those ratings are for politicians. :uglyhamme

BTW, I voted Yes, to link the FAQ. ITs a great resource.

I guess I am the only one so far that likes to hear people's questions instead of saying, here are the answers to your questions so we don't need to hear from you....if this were how things were supposed to run,
THIS ENTIRE FORUM WOULD BE A BLOG!!!!!

Doug; Good question, I really think the FAQ should be "on top" and everytime I look they are getting organized better and better. THis site still suffers from a very weak search engine. In addition most sites have a "Must Read" which would be good.

I find I can find stuff on the TT easier from Google than the engine on here.

Congrates on being a moderator! Good choice from MC!

now WHO went and screwed this poll up??? It was perfect! 100% FOR the FAQ.

So, heres the thing. If we link it, can we call it "The Official FAQ link" ? I think that sounds awesome!!! :toast:

Why don't we make the whole system automated. We could use the old HAL2000 to answer all of the questions. Heck we wouldn't have to post, establish relationships or any of that. Just read! Some of us just get off answering redundant questions. First the SS thread and now this?

It's like when I call a business for someone. Do I need some voice recording telling me what I think, or would I rather talk to a PERSON!!!!!

We are implementing this system as we speak at our local elementary school to assist the first grade teachers with this very issue. It appears a lot of first graders are asking the same questions year after year. They can now simply push a button and a menu system goes through the various questions that have been frequently asked from subsequent years. :D We probably only need a reference to thread topics. Search should get it but maybe a directory of searches or menu in the corner. That way the newbie can reference the thread and ask the question if not answered in the appropriate thread. The directory could have titles such as steering, engine performance, swimsuit size, gelcoat, teak, care etc... :D

Didn't realize you were so offended by the whole thing. I really meant it to help people, particularly those people who weren't quite ready to jump into the internet discussion pool. You make it sound like I want to farm the whole thing out to India. To be clear, I suggested a link to it. I didn't mean that you had to go through it every time to get into the site or that it was required reading at all for that matter. By that logic, I don't think it's like the phone tree when you call the bank or AOL.

Oh, nevermind! I think having a link is great! I also think it is cool when a person asks why his boat pulls to the right. I hope that one never goes away. What would we do all day Easty? I was just messin' with you and actually wanted the thread to stay around. Nothing like a good debate. I would like the TeamTalk menu (left side only) to be on page one. http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/forumdisplay.php?f=12
I think the birthday or something else could be a link only. Newbies asking questions is a good thing and so will a link or a menu with topics running the length of the left side.

Well, the reason I brought all this up is that sometimes I feel like I look impatient for telling people to check the FAQ thread. It's not that I mind answering the same questions over and over. But to the extent that they are the same questions, I finally decided it would be easier to group the responses in one place and just say click the link. And it's nice to not have to type the same thing (and forget part of it as I go). Also good not to upload the same picture of my rudder with the grind mark over and over for the sake of server space. So that's my motivation. Sometimes threads that have this information and have it all parsed out disappear and aren't really that easy to find.

I really don't know that linking it on the home page would make that big a difference. I mean it's linked in probably 20,000 different places in various users signatures already and it still gets overlooked. So I guess it's probably less likely to get seen on the home page, i.e., gets lost in all the other links and shiny buttons. Oh well, I'm going to go pick up my Outback Special and Chopped Salad.

Later.

In my opinion, I think differing opinions make the world go round. Sometimes, we just gotta be contrary.
