I bought an 82 stars and stripes (cream w/ Rootbeer metal flake stripe). I got the boat for 3500 in great shape. The guy had jerry rigged an ignition out of a chrysler rather than using a Presto - lite distributor. This year the boat won't hardly run at all. Is it worth to take it to Performance Marine in Nashville, TN and have them fix it like it supposed to be, or should i just sell the boat for what i can get out of it. I love this boat and use the hell out of it. But am scared of the amount i may have to fork out to get it fixed. The boat is in great shape, all new interior etc. just now the motor needs work. Thanks

Tell us a bit more about your boat. Does it have the PCM 351 or is it one of the few with a mopar engine?
I would recommend a call to Vince at Discount Inboard Marine as a place to start.

i would have it fixed the ignition isn't that big of a deal or you can put a electronic ignition in it your self they are easy to put in. the reason it probably doesn't run that well is because it has the old point system witch you have to replace the points ever so often. you can buy the conversion kit from skidim.com for about a hundred bucks. do you ski on Priest lake?

Oh yes, welcome! Nice to have another 82 here.
Do you have pictures to post of your boat?

Ski King did you put a new style dash in your boat? from your picture it looks like you have a dash from the late 80's in it.

I am looking for that color scheme in a project boat. If it goes up for sale, feel free to send me a private mesage here on the forum. I'm about 150 miles east of you.

Orginal dash, but updated the gauges and replaced the wood grain wallpaper with oak.

The boat has the 351 PCM with an electronic ignition. I dropped the boat off saturday in Nashville Tenn. Figured what the hell no matter the cost at least it will be fixed right and ready for the lake this summer. I am getting ready to redo the trailer and put some 06 mastercraft trailer wheels and paint the frame of the trailers the rootbeer metal flack with cream fenders. The guys in Nashville said they had never seen a stars and stripes in this good of a condition. Anyone know any good places you can get a replacement rub rails for the boat. And stereo suggestions

I think you'll enjoy your '82 S&S. I just sold my '84 at the end of last season. It was a great boat to ski behind.

i found a pyle system with a wired remote and two speakers for 170 on ebay...thinking of doing that and putting the speakers in the motor cover.....and mounting the head unit behind the flip up seat....

I have two speakers in my spotters seat base, one 12" sub behind the spotters seat, one speaker on each side of the back seat and a 10" sub behind the back seat. Head unit on the dash. I dont have the flip up seat.

I wouldnt put the speakers on the engine cover. The speakers will project the sound outward, instaed of outward, and plus, i dont think it looks all that good. :twocents:

i thought about making some side panels like on the early 90's pro stars and putting the speakers there....how did you mount them by the rear seat....and what size are the ones in the bases

all are 6 1/4" I made small boxes and put them beside the seat and covered them with the same carpet that is on the floor.
Not my boat but my rear speakers are in the same place, but a lot less noticeable because the "boxes" are the same color as the carpet

our two are behind the driver seat, and by the observer seat

my rear seat is a wrap around seat....wouldn't be able to get boxes behind them....probably will just take some treated plywood and cover in the same color carpet and make some side panels with more storage and put the speakers in them....at least until i get a tower....

haha....i am guessing you don't like towers....i haven't completely decided yet because i am not that good at wakeboardin and already have an extended pylon and a tower is a **** load of money

haha....i am guessing you don't like towers....i haven't completely decided yet because i am not that good at wakeboardin and already have an extended pylon and a tower is a **** load of moneyReally has nothing to do with a tower. The boat isn't made for it, although there will be differing opinions. And it's not the structural integrity of the hull. The 82 and similar models are just not a wake boat...period. It's an entire different hull design.
Thus I say..." Oh to ruin a good boat."

I agree, dont go with a tower, your boat is just not made for it! I justwent with a highpole on my 83, it works just as good as a tower, for a fraction of the price. Wow that felt like I was on an infomercial.
FHMan1905
03-21-2006, 09:38 PM
yeah i have one that i made out of some two inch steel tubing and a took an old ski pole and cut the top ball off of it and welded it all together and had it powdercoated looks better than a skylon...haha

Towers do look better than highpoles, on newer boats. I think that putting a tower on your 82 will subtract form the boat, but its your boat, I am just giving you an opinion. :twocents:

yeah like i said i haven't completely made my mind up...my buddy has an 83 and found a guy in Tennessee that used to be a frabricator for mastercraft on all their towers and he custom built for my buddies stars and stripes and it looks sweet
