View Full Version : Why, oh why, is the new '06 X2 not titled as a 19 footer?

My understanding that the all new X2 is actually under 20' 0" long. Living on a lake with strict length limitations of 19 feet and inches maximum, you can certainly understand my frustration that this boat cannot be titled/ MSO'd as a 19 footer. Surely our lake is not the only one in the U.S. with this under 20 foot problem. We currently have a gorgeous ProStar 197 with ZeroFlex Flyer tower and ballast that we truly love but we have really made the switch over from slalom to wakeboarding and the new X2 is a dream come true...or so we thought and hoped! The ProStar is increadible for slalom skiing but certainly leaves something to be desired in both seating capacity/ configuration and the wakeboard wake is below average. Any suggestions or ideas how to get this boat on our lake?!!??! HELP, I'm dyin' here!

well, why are the restrictions in place on your lake? erosion issues? you may not be able to take it onto your lake.

that's the way things go down sometimes. unless you can bribe someone to sell you a title to a 19 foot i/o or something.

Who's in charge of checking what boats are launched on the lake? surely they'll know if your boat isn't suitable.

Can't you just have the boat measured?

We had slightly the same problem with our old skiboat. We had the dealer list the boat at 20'(it was 21) on all the paperwork and everything went without a hitch. I have also heard of people fudging registration papers, because here in CA, you only need to carry a COPY of you registration papers, which leaves the papers open to a few counterfeit problems/advantages!

The 2006 Brochure showing the X-2 and it's specs. show it as 20'/6.1m and that should be w/o swim platform. The only X Series boat under 20' is the X-7 @ 19'-8"/5.99m w/o swim platform according to the brochure.
I dont' know the regulations concerning the bolted on fiberglass platform vs the removable teak platform, cause the permanent bolted fiberglass may add length because it is not removable and thats another 2'+/-

I here you on the length restrictions. Ours is 20' on the nose. A new 197 isn't in the stars for me for a few years and only open bow option readily available is a 205 which won't work. Kind of a bummer

Just a thought, but maybe you could have the boat documented with the USCG. That way you won't need to register it in your state (documented boats don't use registration numbers) Alot of larger cruisers/yachts are documented.

I guess it would all depend on the "real" length of the boat.

I was thinking of this too, because my parents had to do this with our big boat because we were on a 70' mooring with a 72' boat. However, after a little research, I discovered that in order to document, a vessel must measure at least five net tons. It is really easy to change the length by a few feet on large boats, too bad its not so easy on the small boats!

Depends on the state as well, we had a 19 foot I/O become registered as a 20 foot when they started measuring swimplatform lengths on boats w/ integrated platforms.

Our local dealer has been working with his rep to see if MC can assist in anyway since the boat physically measures under 20'. Our lake goes by titled length on the title in our state...this is determined by the MSO from the manufacturer. Our lake is old school lake that really has been over built. The irony is that they allow any length pontoon boat with whatever size engine somebody has the balls to bolt onto the back of it but they cannot see that an inboard/ v drive can do circles around these "barges" of the lake. Our ProStar 197 is titled as a 19 foot - Indiana has no inches on their titles so there are several 190's and 197's on our lake. Just crossing my fingers that MC will be able to help out in some way.

On a side bar...we have no ski club on our lake. Anyone had any luck putting one together? My thought is to gather enough riders/ skiers to form a club and in turn generate some numbers in trying to get the ancient ruling of 19 feet or less changed. Just a thought that will no doubt take months to organize and even longer to try and get the board to change the rule...
