Somebody emailed this to me, thought I'd share. This guy is hardcore, but piping Newt Gingrich into the jail? That's got to be cruel and is definitely unusual... ;)

Ain't that the truth....... no way the current legal system would ever allow it though. Just makes way too much sense.

Arpaio is awsome. Big neon sign over the tent city jail which can be seen from I-10 that says VACANCY.

Apparently they are allowing it. I guess anyone opposing it would be hard pressed to argue that it is cruel and unusual punishment to make people live no worse than our soldiers do in Iraq.

It's just that Newt Gingrich thing kind of bothers me -- psychological torture? attempted brainwashing?
If you don't think it's so bad or you like Newt, then imagine how you'd feel if you were forced to listen to Rev. Al Sharpton lectures every day???

Maybe their allowing it in AZ. But their giving inmates more rights here..... not cutting back on them. Making them work outside in the rain or snow would not go over with the civil rights people. Can you imagine this going over in California?

The late R R had them and the unemployed working for awhile in good ole CA. :D Maybe their allowing it in AZ. But their giving inmates more rights here..... not cutting back on them. Reagan? Geez, that was 30 yrs ago. We'd all be better off if he could get that going again. As it is, it looks like we might end up with more unemployed coming into the US.

While I admit it is amusing, I don't see how that solves their problem. They are in the clink for a reason. By not rehabilitating them, or presenting them some other avenue to make a living other than crime the recidivism rates will remain high. It's just like the juvenile boot camps or the DARE program--they do not work. You cannot just incarcerate someone for 10 years and let them stare at the walls.

The supposed Sheriff has a track record of success according to the internet. He also appears to be running an acredited high school within the walls/fences. If rumor is valid it appears he is realizing much success. Urban legend for now! ;) While I admit it is amusing, I don't see how that solves their problem. They are in the clink for a reason. I don't buy it HB. I have my Under Grad in Criminal Justice and have sat in far to many corrections classes, wrote to many papers and heard to many liberal professors lecture to know that shiite does not work.

I agree but I also agree that a weight room, free porn, food, cable and a generally posh setting doesn't deter anyone either. Nobody is above a good beating if they deserve it. What is earned is much more valued. I had a job as a collector/repo man for a long while. I began to think that the few that I dealt with were representative of the general population when they actually represented around 3%. Assuming the majority of county criminals can be rejuvinated and are not hardened criminals we should be able to implement a system that suggests to a new timer that he or she won't want to repeat the treatment. If the system begins weak and is consistanly beaten it will only lead to repetition. Pop them now early and often. He isn't running a state pen. The state and federal level should prove if he is successful. :D I don't buy it HB. I hear ya..."hedonistic calculus" (Jeremy Bentham) the punishment must out way the pleasure of the act.

But, our Constitution forbids "cruel and unusual punishment." Corpral punishment will never fly. Although, I consider myself a right winger, I think the liberals raise a good point on this issue.

This is one subject I will admit I have no sollutions. I will also say they are criminals and there is no reason we can't try everything. The tents remember are in Arizona. Right now I would consider that a vacation. I am also assuming a well structured day that includes high school equivalency teaching cannot be all bad. He is probably not breaking any ethical treatment rules just teaching them old fashioned values, work ethic and giving them a high school education. Urban legend or not if it works it should be followed elsewhere. Good food for thought anyway! I hear ya..."hedonistic calculus" (Jeremy Bentham) the punishment must out way the pleasure of the act.

Very true. But, I'm leary of things I read on the internet. I would like to see some statistics based on true research indicating recidivism rates etc. As you said though, if it works it works.

If! If it works your job just became a little more rewarding and very much less repetitive. :D Assuming you are in or planning a career in law enforcement.Very true.
