I have some old photos that I posted. Here is the one of the beach towel (since I seem to see that mentioned quite a bit) from 88, it was $25.00 back then. Anyone else have any of their old catalogs/Star mag?

Peace out, Curt

Don't have a picture of it , but we called it the big cookie
. We would get 3-4 people up on it and had a ball! Damned that brings back memories. The closest thing we had to todays tubes was a 4-5' long canvas raft. It had a rope running along the sides. We would wrap our arms under and around it while holding the ski handle and the maniac we boated with would fling us around in circles behind his Clastron CV-16 powered by a 140 HP Merc. Needless to say it was FUN!!!! :firejump:

Bring it to Mag Mania 2.It should make some good stories! It may be Illegal to fly it down there now as there are power lines that span the lake. I do remember flying it down there when I was in college. I had no choice but let two inexperienced friends drive the baot while I took a flight. They did a pretty good job untill I looked ahead and saw some power lines. I freaked out  as the only way to lose altitude was for the driver to slow the boat. Well I gave them the visual signal, but my buddies were too busy waving to all the boats following us  and weren't even watching me. Well I start to screaming at the top of my lungs to  get me down!!!! Well they finally got the hint and dropped me like a rock about 100' before the lines. All I could think was I would look like something in a cartoon frying on those electrical lines :purplaugh

ya we did have a homemade saucer like that when I was a kid
I found it last year in a friends garage and intend to get it out this summer for ole time's sake!

I never realized that saucer with the chair thing was that popular. Thats neat they still do it. Dad wants to teach me. Boy a boom would come in handy for that. He could be right there in teh boat to shout directions at me. :D He taught my buddy to do 180's on it about 10 years ago, but he didnt stick with it. Dad did 180's, 360's, the chair, and the step ladder. He laughed when he looked at the pics last night when I showed him he was on the internet. I am still thinking about dusting off that old saucer and learning it this summer. He bought that from some place in Wisconsin that made them. He cant remember the name or where it was. But I do remember faintly as a child going to that place and buying that saucer.
My buddy calls that saucer a "ski torture device" :D

so does anybody else have one of these old relics lying around??

ya know, I was thinking he used to have another device he called an "aqua plane" it was red and yellow. it was basically a sheet of thick plywood about 5 ft X 2 ft and it had a rope handle on it. and your tow rope attached to the front of it. and you rode it like a big ski on the water. so you were towed on it, you sat down, kneeled, or if you were really daring, stood up. and like tubing, you were at the mercy of the boat driver. he said that thing would build up SERIOUS speed on hard corners, especially if you transfered your weight and helped a bit. He said he took some nasty high speed falls on that board. I remember that thing was still in our garage about 15 years ago..... but I dont know what happened to it.... havent seen it in a long time. I will see if I can locate it for old times sake.

My dad still has our saucer. He is looking for the old pics to scan into the computer. I remember my brother and I standing between his legs while he did 360's on it or he would put us on his shoulders. That was the first thing we ever rode. I have the old ski's we learned on when we were 5. I will get a shot of them, I think they were homemade.

I can't ever imagine going over a jump on it. It scared me enough just to fall and guess were it was going to pop up. I got cracked several times on the head or legs by it.\

UMP, awesome pics of the saucer! A few of my uncles used to do the chair & ladder trick. Sadly I don't think anyone ever took any pictures.
I learned to ski (?) on the "piece of plywood" aqua skier thing growing up as well. Pretty fun until you fell, and that thing submerged a few feet. It would oscillate back and forth as it surfaced. That f'er caught my knee once, that was the last time I ever rode it! Ahh, the memories . . .

I build 2 aquaplanes like these 7 years ago for my kids and for a friend kids. My kids learned skiing standing up on this device behind the row boat and its 4HP evinrude, they were 3 and 2 years old at the time. I though this was the best device for beginning. The next year they started on trainer wooden skis with ease. Last summer, at 9 years old, my doughter was doing a pretty good slalom... next year is the course...
For adults, this can be very dangerous as it does pickup speed around corners like a tube. I installed 2 fins on it a couple of years later: much better... I will see next week-end if I can get pictures of it.

plastic, about 4feet long and had a ski handle that you held on too. this was the "latest and greatest". in the late '70's actually the plywood disk worked better. looking at some of those "old" pictures sure brought up some great memories of childhood and being at the lake.

I grew up riding them (zip sleds and bob skeds), and my father-in-law has a working blue "Admiral Zip Sled" made by the General Plastics Co. They are great starters to get kids on the water. They also make for an easy transition to skiing or boarding. They were sued out of production some time ago. This is a 4 yr old relative (anonymous) of mine. As you can tell from the expression, they are lots of fun. :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If anyone has one in good condition they'd like to sell, I'll take it off your hands for a fair price.

I really prefer the orange "Bob Sked." Basically the same thing, but it has handles on the side that makes it easier to ride/stand up. There's also a yellow plastic one that looks like two pontoons with a center piece. The yellow and orange ones are what we grew up with.

As for the Bob Skeds, unfortunately, hundreds of them met their end when Schliterbahn in San Marcos got rid of one of its water slides that utilized them. I've been in touch with them, and they were all destroyed according to the person with whom I spoke. As you can tell, I'm very interested in getting hold of one of these things for my kids. The blue one has many patches on it.

I remember the disk, but I remember it because my dad was "thrifty" and I helped him make one. He was a maniac on that thing. I, unfortunately, do not have the photos and don't know if he still has the disk. I have a set of Mastercraft trick skis that match the jumpers shown early in this post. I've only been on them twice in my life and wiped out both times... inhaling half the river at the same time. My dad to this day still has the precursor to today's kneeboard. He has a glide slide. It's white plastic, about 6-7 inches thick and a little longer than todays kneeboards, not quite neoprene padding, and a drain plug in the back. You really couldn't do many air tricks, but 360's and jumping from wake to wake were awesome on that thing.

And then they go and humiliate me with a two handled rope. ;)

And for those who argue my taste in swimwear hasn't improved ...

So as the story goes, I got on an O'Brien as quickly as I could.

I even sprung for the matching $5 gloves.

But our driver was never thirsty. ;)

Nice Pics

Hope you aren't counting on USPS.

Don't know. I just estimated shipping and sent cash before he could change his mind. When you find the deal you want, you do what you gotta do to make it happen.

CAn't joke about them..... Someone might find my old pictures - I remember some worse than those.... Especially the red/white flowered "jams" the lady next door made for us.... (For you youngsters there was a lot of nifty colors/designs in the late 60's - early '70's)

Got it for my 13 month old son if/whenever he's ready to ride it. No better get 'em on the water young and eventually transition them to skis tool/toy that I know of. Plus, since they haven't made them in close to 30 years, you've got to jump on them when you find them. I've been looking hard for well over 3 years or longer.

Right on...it looks like a good training tool. If it doesn't arrive you could always fashion one out of an old ski handle and a hydroslide. :D

Oh, I think it will get here. I just mailed my check on Friday. Found a guy on another forum that had one he was ready to part with. They have at least 3 different varieties that I'm aware of, the one pictured above (same as the one I'm getting) being the one I hoped I ended up with because of the handles on the side.

The blue ones (admiral/captain zip sled) are nice because they have a reservoir that keeps them stable in the rear, which is nice for the kids.

Well, we got the Bob Sked/Zip Sled last night. It's in great shape. My 13 month old climbed up on it and sat down for a ride around the carpet, which led to instant giggles. It may be a few years before it sees the water, but I've gotten my money's worth already.

I saw a piture of it on planet nautique and pm'd the guy saying whenever he decided to get rid of it to drop me a line. He responded with a cash price and I took it. Just got lucky. I've had a few good leads over the years that never panned out until now.

Here are a few from circa 1971. This is our family's first ski boat - complete with 35 hp Evinrude OB. That is my mom getting ready to go - gotta love the "bathing cap" in the last two shots.

A good portion of this thread has been devoted to ski sleds, discs, etc. Here is another device called the Ski Skimmer in Overtons

http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=11204

I copied this design and made one years ago using a 2' x 4' piece of plywood - cost me about $9 at the time. We used it to introduce toddlers to the sport. Their first experience is being pulled by hand in shallow water. A brisk walk is all you need to get them planing. Our slogan was "if you can stand, you can ski".

When you pull them behind the boat (just above idle speed), its a good idea to have the boat end of the rope tied to a handle, and have the person let go when the kid falls. The thing can do a slow nosedive and the kid may not let go at the right time.
