We've all been here. You catch a few sets off a friend, or a freind of a friend, or someone at your club. Your helping wipe down the boatand its time to leave, what do you think is the right amount $ to give him for a few sets in the course? I look forwards to your comments

What kind of boat was it behind, was there a lot of goofing around behind the boat, or was it a pure ski session? $15 is what friends pay me, or at leaste they will be...

Sets only and the course is at the launch. Comp boat, perfect pass and a big A$$ 300+ HP engine of pure pulling fun.

If they were true friends, they wouldn't expect to get paid but would appreciate if you brought some beers or something, or drove for him while he skied. At least that was the rule where I used to ski.

If you were my bud, I'd just be happy to have you along for the friendship and to drive when it was my turn to ski. :toast:

At the very least enough to cover the cost of the gas. Hopefully more to cover upkeep of the boat.
I agree $15.00 to $20.00 for 2 or 3 sets.

I am usually just happy to get a 3rd but the $$ sure helps.

I never charge! Can't ski around here with only 2! I do work in a rotation. Three boats all rotating on Wednesday and weekend mornings. The only problem is if we all want to slalom it is my boat and wake is all others (not really a problem). I also invite everyone that comes out, so no charge! Forget the gas it is $25.00 to launch! We all have a blast and it is worth every penny! :D

shepherd
02-07-2006, 10:32 PM
Now if you were just some stranger who came up and asked me for a pull, I'd say "20 bucks!" :D

I guess the key is whether you were invited by the boat owner or you invited yourself. Put it this way: If I invited you over for dinner and when you showed up I asked you for $10 to pay for your steak, that wouldn't be right. But if you brought a token 6-pack or bottle of wine to share, it would be appreciated.

Watch it! I didn't even get you out on my boat last year :( you had me out many times! Need to catch up this year Bob!

I'm trying to decide between Geist and Morse this year. Don't think I will rent a slip, but will see.
I've never taken gas money, but probably would have when I was younger. Especially if you are the only one with a boat and many friends going out. Then $10-20 each is good. One guy brought me a quart of 303 after hearing I like it and use it (he buys by the gallon).

No season pass available! Wed only $10.00. You gotta love it. Leroy I will get out this year but Geist would make it easier. If we had a lift and could time share a slip I may be interested. I can't see my baby sitting in that crap over night. The $25.00 is a deterrent fee but it deterrs few!$25 Bucks!! Usually play it by ear, but generally it is 10-20 dollars depending on how long we were out and how much was given last time out. Also, how much time we were out.

But, money is usually exchanged, unless we are running two boats on a weekend trip or something. Then, we just jump back and forth between boats and it works out.

Gas gets EXPENSIVE when you ski 3-5 times a week.

I have a good crew of people that usually join me and have been doing so for many years. I never have and never will ask for gas money, however, they always offer and generally even after I decline, I find it stuffed in a compartment in my truck. These are all friends that understand that what they are giving is very small as compared to what they are receiving, meaning that they don't have to own the boat or tow vehicle, no maintenance, etc. I do have one person that simply does not have the funds to contibute, however, he always offers to detail my boat and does a great job.
Generally $20 is the figure when all is said and done.

I agree with Rob here. I generally ski at the club and money never changes hands just exchange ski rides. The written club policy is $5 a set though. That being said if I invite someone out on the boat I would never ask for gas money. I blow so much gas through the boat that pulling someone for a couple of sets is a negligable expense at most. Plus having friends out is nice. But at the end of the day they better grab a towel and start wiping like everyone else. :)

I tend to give $20.00 or sometimes I bring a 5 gallon jerry can of gas , when I ski with others . I play it by ear when people ski with me , I don't let first time visitors pay , but tend to take cash after that . the people that don't offer to help out cash wise or in other way's are not invited back.

"Pay so that more can ski" is my credo! :D

I don't care if someone offers gas money, but I do expect them to help out when it comes time to clean up everything afterwards.
A few years ago, when I was boatless, I would offer $10 to friends after going out with them. 99% of the time they would decline.

We do not ask for money when we are out with others, we usually just enjoy being able to go out and we consider ourselves lucky enought to be able to afford such a nice toy. We have a group of friends that we rice with and we all rotate boats so it ususlly works out. When we are out with people we are not as good friends with we usually offer some money I guess the amount is played by ear, but we ALWAYS help wipe down the boat and unload. We do expect the same from anyone who has been on our boat, grab a towel and start wiping.

We never ask either! It's just palin courtesy to offer money to buy the gas. Some of our guests also bring food and drinks.
$20.00-$25.00 seems like a good number from the guest skiers.

One guy I ski with on an irregular basis always show up with a 5 gallon jug of gas. He always helps wipe the boat down. He is also a boat owner and respects the fact I don't beat up the boat or my ski equipment and is very careful. Most of the other people I ski with we just trade pulls back and forth and it evens out in the end.

This is my cost to take my X2 out

Truck Gas 7 gallons =$17.50

Ramp fee =$15.00

Boat Gas 20 gallons =$50.00

Cleaning the boat 5 Hrs. my time +ware and tear on the boat = $100.00

$182.50 if you take out 5 people =$36.50 each so $20.00 for the day is good
Or A 12 pack :toast:

Rex, As I read your message I thought for sure you were going with my alternative ending!

As far this threads be kind to your boat owner! I agree even if you can't spring some cash or the owner declines, you can still help clean up and maybe show up on winterzation day or dewinterazation day! or even midsummer waxing day! or.... always something to do on a boat.

In the group I ski with, we tend to rotate boats, but mine is usually the least one used (it might be because it is at least 10 years older than the others!) A few times a summer I'll try to make them take $20 for gas.

I actually have never charged for gas. I suppose if I had regulars I would... Generally, we take a kid out from the neighborhood or I have some good friends who come up for the weekend. I have an X-9, and the kids I take out usually wakeboard and are so excited about going behind my boat (they usually have an I/O). The great thing is that it always makes me appreciate what I have - and the fact that I can take it out and ski behind it anytime I want.

I am so anal about my boat
Like all of you
So waxing, oil changes general up keep I do, It would drive me crazy
If someone waxed my boat

If the person is a pain in my a$$ it is more, but if the person
Is courteous and knows how to act in a boat, general a cool person
Boating should be fun and shared with people who can’t go
When they would like, I don’t ask for money but if they offer
To kick in I think it is ok; I NEVER take money from the girls :headbang:

Whew, man if it cost that much for me to ride everyday, I'd never own a boat. Hey Rex, get shared waterfront near your lake. Property values are only a bit higher than a regular home & you'll eliminate the ramp fees & truck costs, not to mention the aggravation at the ramp.

Not ALL of us. If someone wanted to wax my boat or change my oil, I'd say go for it! The only thing I ask of my passengers is respect the driver and be happy (no complaining/whining).

And 5 hours for cleaning after each use? Man, that IS anal. For me: unhook the trailer, unload the toys and empty beer cans, leave the cover off overnight to dry out and cover her the next day -- 15-30 minutes tops. I guess its easier with a paid-for 16 year old boat in only fair cosmetic condition...

$5-10 is fair for me. My driver usually pays for the $8 launch fee. If someone gives me $20, I'm stoked, but their next time out is free. I only want them to cover the cost of gas.

I wouldn't be going out if it weren't for my friends. I bought the boat and accept all costs for owning and maintaining. To go beyond that, I might as well get my state and federal tax id and run it as a business....I doubt my driver would have bought me a jug of binding lube for Christmas if I were charging $20/pop.

$20 bucks here, $10 bucks there. Do you guys really take the money?
I wouldn't hear of it.

The usual crowd usually shows up with beer and food and will beat me to pay at the gas station on occasion. However, I towed my boat up to Knoxville last spring for a wedding up there and took all the groomsmen out on the river prior to the ceremony. They all offered to throw some cash in, and I appreciated it but didn't accept. I did appreciate the guys who helped wipe down after we got it out.

Come on Rex. Read it aloud so you get it right........ Shared waterfront. In SoCal? How about Canyon Lake?
http://www.canyonlakehomes.com/
My brother bought a place in there for $160k about 3 yrs ago. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, big patio, about 15 yrs old, nice place. His place was 4 blocks from the lake. Close enough he used a 4 cylinder Subaru to pull his PS190 to the ramp!!
You'll have private access to 2 lakes, a golf course & equestrian trails.
Plus there is more slalom, wakeboard & hydrofoil talent in that neighborhood than any other in the world.

I have redden at Canyon Lake a lot, in the past few years
It is so crowded like most of So. Cal. It is starting to get dangerous
And yes I know that you can find a home on the lake for about 1 mill
But to fight the traffic to get to work ever day I would kill my self

The one home for $740.000 is a 3-bedroom 1800 square foot home
And it is not on the lake

Hay thank you for looking, I appreciate it, I would love to live on a lake.

Yea, I hear ya. Shared waterfront is a lot different than living on the lake. I have shared now, live less than 2 blocks from the water, can see it out the bedroom window, and have a private beach, dock, ramp & boat slip. And the house was a good $500k less than anything right on the lake. Not ideal, but really takes all the work out of skiing. Drag the boat to the lake once in the spring & then out in the fall (maybe a few times in between). Stick a couple of gas cans in the bed of the truck & fill them whenever I fill the truck.

I have a buddy who has a rental house in Canyon..... goes for $1400/mo. and it's just down the street from the ramp to the back lake.
Last time I rode there was 4 or 5 yrs ago. Hard to believe it could be worse now.... especially with all their rules. No motorcycles, only 2 boats at speed at a time, no tricks when you ride around the island, what a bunch of bull. But it's still affordable.... for now.

Most of the people that we go out with won't take no for an answer. We've all been friends for a long time and nobody is looking for a free day - that is what it turn into anyway: an entire day - Two tanks of gas really adds up when you're filling up a 45 gallon tank @ $2.50 or so. We all have fun and that's the bottom line regardless of who pays for gas, food or Taco Bell afterward.

If I didn't, I'd never be able to afford to ski. Even keeping the boat on the lake, it would cost me $500 - $1000 or more per month to ski. Why you would take that expense on yourself when others are willing to help out is beyond me.

Yea, if people are contributing in some way other than gas, I certainly don't hound them at all. But if there is no contribution at all, then they don't get asked to come out again. And anyone who regularly comes out knows that we need gas & I encourage them to carry a gas can if possible. We get out a lot, 4 or 5 times a week in the summer. So it really helps to bring fuel.

Our place is WAO (water access only (in case no one knew)) so when we have people up it's for the wknd and they always bring food, beverages and contribute for gas and as others have said, if they bring nothing it's a long time before they're invited back.
Even going to a buddies road access, we would always split gas for the wknd. If, on the other hand people are just there and you are taking them for a couple of pulls maybe a few beers are enough,
Personally, I don't like asking for $$$ but if someone offers I don't think it's a bad thing to say Thanks, go for a tour then bevvies back at the shack.

When I'm pulling for the club with my boat, I expect $5 per set. All that will cover is the cost of gas.

We've had members in the club who wanted to amortize their cost of boat ownership into the price and would charge $10 per set to members who wouldn't/couldn't provide boats for club use. They explained that it was gas, wear and tear, insurance, etc. Usually when I know they are planning on bringing their boat, I'll bring mine, just to offer a lower cost option.

Personally, I get pleasure out of boat ownership.

So......$5/set please. I'll buy my own beer.
