So, I go into work on Wednesday and my boss says that we need to talk. I am thinking ***, I had been on my best behavior for the quite some time, and hadn't had any complaints or upset customers. Plus, I had just got back from a long weekend.

He takes me into the store manager's office and the HR manager is sitting there. NOT GOOD! :( We sat down and started to talk, and there was an issue with my schedule. I currently don't work on Tues/Thurs. because I have classes on those days. They said that if I wanted to keep my position I needed to work 8-4:30 M-F with NO EXCEPTIONS.

Also, she stated that there was an issue with some of my breaks and lunches. Since being promoted to a Team Leader over 3 years ago, I can probably count the number of times I took a 15 minute break on one hand. So, I was now being possibly written up or terminated for that, but they were going to be consulting regional HR to determine the "punishment" for that. I explained that NONE of the Team Leads take these 15 minute breaks, because it just isn't feasible with our work load. She (HR) stated that she was not concerned with the other team leaders, only myself.

Finally, the meeting was over.....I went to work, but this just didn't sit right with me so I told my boss that I was taking some of my personal hours, and that I would need the rest of the day off (wednesday). I went home and started to consider my options in regards to what was going to happen when I went in on Friday. After much thought, I realized that TARGET was not worth all of this stress and BULL*HIT. I talked with my Uncle (lawyer) to find out his opinion on this situation, and he said what ever happens DON'T let them fire you.

Having a termination on my resume would be much worse than resigning my position without notice. So, today at 1 o'clock, 2 hours before my shift I went to have a chat with my boss. I walked into his office, told him we needed to talk, and after I tried to work out an exit strategy with him, and he stated I wouldn't last 2 weeks, I handed him my resignation, told him to have a good life, and see ya later. I said goodbye to some of my friends told them I quit, and vowed never to step foot in the F'in store again.

Thats the story, after 6 years, they were FORCING me out of the company for no reason other than I wouldn't work 8-4:30 with all the other management......the only reason he (my boss) wanted me there was so that he could assign me numerous tasks that were technically his duties. I wasn't going to deal with it, so here I am today....6 years seniority down the drain. Nothing like going in on a Monday and not having any issues (working w/ the boss) and quitting by friday.

I'm free :woohoo:

It is only mandated that we take our LUNCHES!!!! Breaks are at the employees discretion, and it was actually frowned upon by my superiors if I would say that I was going to take a break.

At certain times, I was actually told NOT to go on break.

I'm free :woohoo:

lesson time.....
I was forced from Wal-Mart many many years ago. Yes, I said Wal-Mart:rant:

I asked for time off for my honeymoon, it was granted....
when I returned, I had no job.

why, you ask?
I caught a male Assistant Manager in the layaway room, kissing a male stock boy about a week before I asked for time off.......

everything was great with my employment until that time.

Erk: All I can say is that you will look back and see this as the best thing that ever happened to you. As someone who spent 16 years in retail management, and has been out for 5 years, I speak from personal experience. Retail is an addiction, the seasonal changes, Christmas, inventory, making your "numbers", the whole cycle goes on year in and year out. And the companies want your life, and you gladly give it to them because of the addiction. However, once you are out, you wonder what you did with the years? The easiest thing for you to do is to go back into retail, because it is what you know and you are comfortable there. Don't do it! There are plenty of jobs you can do and work your way through school. You won't realize what you are missing in life until you get out of that cycle. Best of luck!

They probably wanted to dangle the potential of being a manager in front of your nose in hopes you'd pick Target over school.

Good move on sticking with school!

Why didn't you ask to assigned to a different "job" in Target that would have afforded you the opportunity to be off on Tues and Thurs?

You must not be that hard up for cash? Remember summer is just around the corner so you better come up with a plan for gas money.....

Chalk it up as a life lesson and look for the positive in this, but also keep in mind lots of people do tons of stuff that's not really "their" job it's called delegating and until you're the one delegating there are two roads you can go down, suck it up or find another job.
Looks like you took that later of the two this time, but with everything in life, now it's time to live with your decision.

Good luck in your job search, I truly believe that if you're willing to work and have a positvie attitude you won't be unemployed long.

erkoehler
02-04-2006, 10:13 PM
I was at the point where I was delegating some of the work load to other employees, but that didn't help with the fact that there are just some things you have to do yourself.

As far as choosing to work hard or find another job....I could have choosen to step down, however that would have put me in a position where I knew how to do the work of the managers, and most likely I would have kept many of the same duties without the pay. I have seen some others attempt to step down from there position, and they hadn't enojoyed it very well, because the expectations and workload of a manager were still given to them without the pay.

Its not that I have spare money just laying around, but when it comes down to it, you have to be happy with what you are doing in life. I would not have been happy at that job, and happiness is more important than money.

I was fortunate enough to find a job relatively quickly, and won't experience a gap in pay checks.

Erk

Had this happen to me when I was in college as well. The Golf Course I worked at pulled the same stunt, they asked me what shift I wanted to work, I created a dream shift and they told me that I couldn't do that and stay in my current position. They then offered me a job in maintenance so they wouldn't have to pay unemployment. Pretty much told them to stick it. In hindsight it was a good decision.

Ahh, its going. We still haven't sold our home in Charleston. It's only been on the market about a week. It's a long story but the reader's digest version is that we had some people approach us in November to buy our home. We wrote out a contract and everything seemed to go fine. We were supposed to close NLT 31 Jan 06. So, about 2 weeks out they weren't making any preperations (Title Company, Termite Inspect...). They had yet to sell there home and backed out! We kept the earnest money. It's now listed with an agent. The good news is that I think even with the realtor's commission we will come out ahead of what we would have netted. The bad thing is I'm seperated from the wife and kids which totally blows. That's life I guess.

No openings at Lakeside right now, but I am sure we could find you something. The Minocqua P.D. might be hiring in the near future. We had one officer get his car stolen after a high speed chase. The suspect got his car stuck in a snow bank so he hops in the cruiser and takes off. The officer opened fire on his own car and missed 4 or 5 times. We had another officer cut a bunch of big trees down on his neighbor's property after he asked if he could, and the neighbor said no. I think the Minocqua P.D. has snowmobiles too so you could get paid to ride! What would you like to do besides law enforcement? Check out www.lakelandtimes.com in the employment section.
