buddy of mine had rock punch hole in hull near bow while trailering to ga. wants me to help him glass hole and spot paint. hole is about the size of a .50 piece. if it goes all way through boat, then i patch from the inside with cloth and resin. if only goes to foam, can i cheat with a fiber galss based automotive body filler ad bondo? also, can i use one of the automotive dupont paint products or similar? am asking opinions without ever having seen the hole.

what sort of boat is it, and how much quality does he expect in this repair?

If it were a mastercraft i'd have it gelcoated not spot painted.

pics too. Plus is there any cracking in the surrounding fiberglass that should be cut out and replaced?

I would fix it from inside. Just my .02

88 ps190 and jeremy -- thanks for reply guys.

boat is a 97 mc ps 197. what i worry about having never seen problem is that hole may be too deep to plug with jel coat plug (assuming that is what you meant). since it is on the underside, i was hoping to plug with fiber glass and apply a jel coat patch covering. am i making sense??

DO NOT USE Bondo on a BOAT, period!

Pics are required to call this shot...actually BEING THERE is required in order to adequately assess the amount of damage...could be as simple as a gel coat repair - easily a DIY manuever...

I cut a rectangle out of my hull all the way through and had it repaired. There's a thread and pics here on the forum...

provided the hole is accessible from inside, i'd fiberglass over the area of the hole plus the surrounding area for reinforcement, on the inside of the boat. On the outside it is probabaly going to be easier to match your gel coat, and make the repair hide if you enlarge the hole by trimming all the rough stuff and making it regular, like sporty's rectangular hole. then depending on the depth of the repair it might be necessary/desireable to build up over your new fiberglass w/ some cut to thin the amount of gel coat that goes in the hole. Gel coat itself is not structural material, so it'll need a solid backing.

Good luck, and don't breath the fumes.
