View Full Version : rudder question.

I know someone on here can answer my question.

I am doing winter maintenance on my 01 190. I am changing the steering cable. And I pulled the rudder to clean and inspect.

There is one teflon thrust washer on the rudder shaft. When I took it apart it was on top of the rudder bearing box under the arm.

My question is: Should not it be between the rudder and the bottom of the rudder bearing box on the bottom of the boat? It looks like that would be the direction of the thrust created by the wing on the rudder.

Or should I just make another one and have one top and bottom. It looks like there is space below the cotter pin hole to add another.

Any input?

p.s I was amazed at the amount of wear in the teflon bushings at the connection from the cable to the rudder arm. The teflon bushings have worn into the stainless shoulder bolt. I think I have found some of the reason for the slack in the steering wheel.

good time to replace the winged rudder and get the rear hooked.

the boat will perform better, just like an 03 190.

i know that boat performs well now, i ski behind an 01 190 often. if you have it hooked and replace it with a regular rudder, your boat will have a better wake, track better and steer easier.

There is no "thrust" washer between the rudder and the rudder box...none is needed. There should however be a small (.010 - .020) gap when the rudder is installed. If the rudder is hard against the bottom of the boat the steering will be very stiff.

BTW, ditch the "winged rudder" you'll be glad you did.

Use the 2006 rudder and the two location tiller arm when you make the swap.

wow I would have guessed that you'd have said that rudder was NOT for an 01 ?? what about rodlt's suggestion of hull hooking an '01 model??

Absolutley! Hooking the hull combined with the new rudder & tiller arm...will be like having a new boat! :)

Robert, sounds like a call to MYMC is in order for you
believe me I thought my 05 rudder was good until I got the 06 rudder installed at Darryl's. That new rudder is wayyyy nicer in every way

Does hooking the hull cause any extra bump on longer line lengths? Seems extra pushing down on the water will cause extra rise when it comes back.

no, it will make the hull simalar or the same as an 03 190/197 and up
