Hawaii, never been there, my wife TELLS me that some day we have to go ... I have a moderate aversion to flying, there is no way I'll fly over an ocean (I know, just as dead if we crash over land) ... but I suppose if I pissed her off bad enough I'd take her to Hawaii ... I'm not real big on 3rd world countries.

No flying over water Pendo? WHY? its much softer crashing on water than it is on land!!! Your a skier for god's sake!!! Think about it!

but I am with you on not wanting to go to 3rd world countries. That sort of thing isnt my bag, baby.... might never make it back home ya know.....there is a certain level of danger there. My GF wants to travel, and I agree to go to Hawaii, but I am not going to any tropical islands unless its a safe place.

Cozumel

Much more laid back for a romantic gettaway than spring break oriented Cancun. Also it is relatively close to you.

Hawaii is another good option although a much longer flight for you.

Cozumel used to be great before the cruise ships started arriving and vomiting passengers all over the island. It has caused an amazing change in Cozumel, and not for the better, IMHO. Only reason to go to Cozumel these days is for the diving - none better along the Great Mexican Reef until you maybe get to Belize/BonAire/Curacao. Those latter three would get my vote (I'm opposed to patronizing Aruba). If not them, then I'd look at some of the nice places by Playa del Carmen and south.

I agree about Cancun - its prime attraction is crazy, stupid nightlife and highly commercialized shopping.

I will throw another vote in for Negril Jamaica. Wife and I went to the Grand Lido in Negril. Very nice and relaxing time.
The thing about Jamaica that some may not like (I did) is that you pretty much do not leave the resort. We did go to Rick's Cafe one evening and also walked across the street to Hedo but that was it.

I would imagine she will be happy with any sort of trip without the kids (if you have any). Just some alone time with you. ;)

Why is that? Crime, you mean? I know the Dominican Republic is like that too...

The nice thing about the "Mexican Riviera" cities is that you really are safe. Unlike Jamaicans, Mexicans really do like norteAmericanos. You can rent a car and drive cross country with relative safety.

Pretty much everywhere you look on the ride from the airport to the resort there is some kid or grown-up selling marijuana. It is a very poor country. I am not so sure how safe it would be to go outside of the resort.

First thing I would do is move any savings to another account in your name only.. Run a credit check on yourself.

Cancel any joint credit cards with her.. Maybe get a PI to follow her..

Any time a woman comes in a says " I am not happy" and of course YOUR the reason, would raise the red flags...... How many times you ever heard the guy say " I had no idea she was doing that"....

Its like when I see a " I'm getting married" thread.. To me its like " I just bought 500,000 shares of Enron stock", you think I am gonna say something good about that???

It's all relative UMP!
I didn't expect I'd get any sympathy on that one.

But then again, if my wife and I were heading south for a much-needed vacation of sun&fun (soaking up rays, swimming in the pool, waterskiing without a wetsuit...) I'd be very disappointed if I we were in the Florida panhandle this week. And the complaining from the wife wouldn't stop!

Actually, at a certain velocity the surface tension of water would make the impact with calm water greater than the impact with land or concrete (hydrogen bonding) ... same reason you can overfill a glass of water and see the convex of liquid above the rim ... as for flying over water, if you loose an engine or two or 4, its not like you can land in a field, that is my fear ... flying over water and I don't care much for heights, but 150mph on a motorcycle is fine with me:) (120 sans helmet is tops though)

Edit ... the motorcyle stuff was before kids:) Playing with them is way more fun than going fast and risking life and limb.

Steve,
I've been to that hotel a few times. It is nice, but there are tons of hotels in that area that are probably more family oriented. Such as the Portofino, Pacific Resort. Universal is an excellent choice if you and your family enjoy roller coasters. Universal has two parks,Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios. Islands of Adventure is newer and IMO has better rides. Your 8 year old should be big enough to ride almost everything. For the evening, there is City Walk that has fun restaurants such as Jimmy Buffets, Hard Rock, etc.
As far as skiing, well, you can always come to my house, I live 10 minutes from Universal. But Orlando has some great ski schools, as well as the cable park which is a lot of fun. Orlando is great.....come on down!!

I'll second TScott on that one. Universal is THE place to go in Orlando IMO. Blows Disney away. Most of Disney's stuff is old and lame. Plus they're all spread out. You can walk to anywhere in Universal (or take a short shuttle boat ride). We've visited all the hotels there several times but never stayed at one. Like TScott, Hard Rock was our least favorite of the 3 hotels at the park, but they all are nice.

One warning about an Orlando vacation with kids: You'll be exhausted at the end (but I'm sure you know that already). If you want to relax, take the cruise.
