Can someone suggest the correct Optima Blue Top Batteries to use in my stereo upgrade? I am either going with the D34M or D31M. Here is a summary of the stereo upgrade.

Amp 1: Kicker KX850.4 running 2 pairs of Clarion 1632 component speakers in the boat and 2 pairs of Clarion 1632 tower speakers

Amp 2: Kicker KX600.1 Class D Sub Amp running a Kicker S12L5 sub in a custom enclosure

Head Unit: Pioneer Premier DEH-P860MP with Ipod Controller

Wiring: 1/0 gauge from batteries to Stinger distribution blocks.

Thanks for the help.

I have the D34M. Consider the duals.

Would there be any need to go to the D31M? I see that it has more CCA and Capacity compared to the D34M. I plan on running dual Optima Blue Tops for my application.

What about the TrollFury? This just appears to be an installation kit for Dual D34M setups.

If I was younger with a KA stereo, the D31M would be the only way to go.. I replaced my D34M last year, and the guy showed me the D31M.. Only $20 more?? IIRC, but an absolute waste in the "geezer " boat.

If I had known about the 31M and had been more prepared to make sure it fit I might have bought it anyways...

Lakes Rick -

I see you in located in the lovely, sunny Pacific Northwest. Where exactly are you located? What lake(s) do you hang out in?

You noticed the difference is physical size right?

Yes I did notice the D31M is slightly larger compared to the D34M. I have to take some measurements to make sure I have room for the 31s, if I go that route.

Thanks for pointing that out.

We now call the area "Northern California" but is used to be called Eugene, Oregon.... I like to go to Crescent lake, Fall creek, Cottage Grove Reservoir, the Willamette around Portland ( take my dad for a ride) and over to the coast at woahink is kinda cool..

Where are you going to put them in the X30? I just moved mine from starboard side rear, to under the observer seat. The 31s were too tall but the 34s just fit.

My plan is to keep the starting battery on the starboard side next to the engine compartment. I currently have another battery for my the stock stereo setup in the X30 on the port side of the engine compartment. My plan is to remove that battery and install the 2 Optima Blue Top Batteries in its place - on the port side in the compartment next to the engine. I have not taken any measurements but I am hoping it fits. I will take some measurements over Christmas break.

I have followed Mr. Diesel's installation since he started his thread back in June of 2005. In fact, he has been my inspiration for this upgrade. He and I have PM'd each other over the past few months. He is truely a wealth of information. That is how I ended up with all my Kicker stuff - talking to Diesel.

Regarding his battery installation, he mounted his Blue Top Batteries in the keel, just in front of the engine. I have not looked at that area yet, but I would venture to guess that with the L-18 engine in my boat, there is not alot of room in the actual engine compartment to mount anything. Oh, the joys of having a BB under the hood.

PS205: Please keep us updated as I, too, am going to install an additional batter in my X30 this winter and would love to see what you do.

Looks like I may be forced to buy a new battery after I pulled the boat out to clean and fix a few minor things yesterday. The #1 battery kept shutting down after about 5 minutes of listing to the stereo and won't hold a charge. If I hear a loud thump tonight, I guess Santa dropped one down the chimney.

FWIW - Take a look at these. Here is another option to Optima. www.dualpro.com The LS3100 packs a little more punch.

COSkier - thanks for the link. I will check them out.

Does anyone know how to calculate and decide exactly how many batteries is needed to power your boat stereo? Am I going overkill with the 2 Blue Top Optimas or will 1 battery be enough? How do I tell?

First, think to yourself, How long (worst case scenario), will you have it on, without the engine running.

If often, then two would be ideal, if little or never, then one. It depends all on your use.
