Those cars are beauties, if you want all the driving pleasure (w/o all the price) you can get the 300 SL Coupe from the same year, and they're easier to get into no one can really climb over the doorsill on a gull wing.

I wouldn't expect this one to get the asking price myself although it might. It does have a different nose than all the other ones i've seen (uglier though, I think the normal one is nicer.)

This are really the german version of an E-Type great cars, and the SL's have always handled extremely well (1 2 at le mans in 52)

I seem to remember prices for the 57s being in the $425K range. I could be wrong. Anyway, so rare they are. Yoda likey.

Ah, but the Lamborghini isn't a "gull wing." Forgot what they call it, but the doors go more forward. The 5000s or whatever is second on my list. 3rd is more reasonable these days. Ferrari 308 GTS. Just need to grow the moustache to go with it.

Rod, that is a beaut. Remembered hearing they were going to make a newer one. Still like the classic lines though. Of course, fuel injection would be nice.

Watched an 82 red 308 gts last year on ebay from a dealership in Ohio. They wanted $36K for it. New clutch and all maintenance current. Had about 40K miles on her. Seats looked like no one had ever sat on them.

Maintenance is a killer. There was an 87 Mondial Cabrio for sale locally here last year at a Nissan dealership. Salvage title so no way I was considering it, but it was still in good shape. Tried to play hard to get to slip in a test drive, but it didn't work. Had the records for the new clutch it had just received. Cost was $3,500.

Now the Lamborghini story. My former brother-in-law's boss had a yellow Countach 5000s. He rode to the airport with him one day. They were on the Hardy Toll Road in Houston when a Testerosa pulls up next to them briefly, then guns it. His boss looked at him and said, "Fasten your seatbelt." Then he punched it. My FBIL said he's never been so frightened in his life. Said they hit 140 or higher. Never caught the Testerosa. It must have exited.

It always blew my mind that the Diablo could do 92 mph at redline in first gear.

Not that i don't think that car could get up there if the guy is for real. but its on ebay, it has the wrong headlights and he doesn't really know the history of the car.

If he were expecting that to hit 400+ thousand it should say, missing underpan, needs paint, the interior is worn, and the nose is questionable, since the 300SL race cars didn't have the SLK front ends, they then designed the SLK race car seperately, which were even more intense.

Notice the pics he has of the car... and then search for images of the 300SL race cars, they still had the upright glass on the front.

Believe me, I understand. This is, however, the first one I've ever seen on ebay. I threw the $425K figure out there as what I've heard these cars going for. I'm far from an expert on the subject. I just think they're purdy.

Any of you guys ever heard of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo? They were such an awesome car. Only 50 of them in the entire world, finding one of them is litterally like finding a needle in a hay stack. They had helecopter engines, it was also the first car to have the engine in the back, and was one of the first cars to use sately belts, and even a padded dash board.

I was at Laguna Seca raceway about 20 years ago for a track day with the Mercedes club. One member brought his Gullwing from Nevada. He kept it in concours winning condition, yet still he felt the car was for driving not just looking. He went all out on the track and rolled it! Ouch. Amazingly, he had a good attitude about it -- life is for living, he said.

whew I have no idea but as mentioned earlier, when you buy one of these museum cars, it comes with a lifestyle (for lack of a better word), where the purchase of the car pales in comparison to the building out of the "showroom" where you keep her in addition to insurance etc.

Talking about classic cars. It breaks my heart when i see what the Shelby Mustangs go for at Barrett Jackson. Best car i ever had was my 66 Shelby, Ivy green SFM6S1291. These cars were truly amazing in handling and performance. They were basically race cars on the street. The little 289 / 306 with 3.89 gears would scream. I was a mustang fanatic, having a Boss 302, 428 cobra jet and a 69 Shelby. There gone now in favor of property, but ther values have sky rocketed. But i guess i have the memories. Right now i drive an 03 Mach 1, which is very quick.
