View Full Version : Gen 2 xstar ballast fill time

Wondering what everyone else is seeing for ballast fill times on their 2nd gen xstar. My 05 takes probably 10 minutes to fill stock ballast and 15 more to fill the 750 piggybacked over the rear port hard tank. Starboard pump seems to be WAY faster as it's got a half full 750 before the port gets to start filling the bag. Pumps are upgraded to green impellers.

KGB seems slow also with about a 10 min fill time.

Suggestions?

Deal with it or is there a problem?

If a mod sees this can you change the thread title to "2nd gen xstar ballast fill time" way it reads now seems like gen 2 surf which I'm not talking about.

Thanks

yea, that seems too long. my KGB fills in less than 7 minutes. have you made the switch to green impellers? make sure the pumps are getting 14 volts too, i have a 90 amp alt (i think...) and it takes about 1k rpm to give them all 14 volts when running.

It does have the green impellers, I'll check the voltage next time I'm out. It's almost annoying how long they take. Maybe I'm just impatient.. I plan to record actual time next time I'm out..

The pumps seem to empty twice as fast as they fill...

Bump your RPM's up to 1500 when filling. The pump draw a lot power and the alternator doesn't put out full power till 1500RPM. A KGB usually take 6-8 minutes.

Thanks Bruce, do you happen to know what oil you guys used in this boat for the oil changes? I bought it from you and I believe you guys serviced it it's entire life.

I've put 57 hours on it already so I need to change the oil :)

Update on this.. Increased the rpm to 1500 and the KGB filled within a reasonable time. However after about 15 minutes of the port running I gave up and hooked up my tsunami pump to finish filling. The 750 bag was maybe 1/3 full after 15 minutes.

Drain time seems 2-3x faster than fill on port side.

Is there a strainer for each pump?

Mine is usually 5-7 minutes and full, I did have a pump not want to engage the other night but just shut off then back on. Do you do all the pumps at one time?

I agree with the above about the RPMs that helps usually significantly for me.

I would personally double check the impellers, just to make sure, esp, if you are having trouble with that one pump.

EDIT on my 06 x-15 I had what I would say was an air pocket once, not wanting to fill or empty, I literally pulled both hoses from the pump, check the check valves, and reconnected and everything was fine. I have zero explanation for that episode.

This weekend I ran the KGB and port at the same time until KGB was full then only ran port. I've checked the impeller in this pump since I'm having slow times with it. Green impeller in perfect condition.

I'm going to pull the pump and play with it out of the boat to see if I can see anything wrong.
