View Full Version : Goodbye to the rainbows

I decided after new years that this was the spring to refresh the boat.

I took the interior to viper. Jim told me about four weeks. This was fine as I had tons of work to do. Week and a half later got the call it was done. Carl and his team do great work. It is not as fancy as the new ones, wanted to stay true to the era. Eliminated most of the colored welt cord and went with top stitch. I think it looks more modern yet still fits the boat.

I thought stripping the old stickers was a bear until I started wet sanding. I probably have 40 hours just in sanding. The hull had raised edges where the stickere were. Started with 600 in places followed by 800, 1000, 1500 and then compounding and waxing.

Replaced all carpet, even under the bow. Made new dash panels Polished all the screws, lift rings, bow hook etc. Added a stereo.

Next was new stickers. I know some people love the rainbows but I am not one. Decided to go with stars and stripes. Used 3m vinyl wrap for the stripe and regular cast vinyl for the stars.

It was a fun project. I will get the fenders back on this week and be on the water next weekend.

Thanks to my dad for helping out, Mr. mastercraft for new trailer lights, Mike g for the files in the dropbox, jeffer for his old gauges and the Teamtalk community for their expertise.

All that hard work (and $) paid off! Looks like a brand new boat! Love the "clean look" for sure; nice choice!

How did you lay out the stripe? I am planning on something similar and have been tossing the options around.

Thanks everyone.

Peter, I went round and round with the stripe. I made paper patterns and tried to cut it from that freehand with some cheap vinyl. The results were not acceptable. Went to a graphics shop and was quoted $2000. Came home and debated putting the rainbows back on. Then while surfing one night I found an add for knifeless tape. It is a thin tape you put down where you want the stripe to be. The tape has a very thin filament embedded inside. You pull this and it cuts the vinyl perfect. I did alot of stressing over nothing. That stuff is amazing.

Nice job.

Esp. like the new dash, looks very current.

They did look like rainbows, wasn't it supposed to depict "spray" from a ski ? Not my fav look either way.

That is what I thought would be the answer. I saw that used years ago on Pimp My Ride.
