Redskins are at St. Louis today. I can't stand to watch any more. :vomit: Three games in a row they were leading in the 4th quarter only to be beat in the last minute or in OT. They should be 8-3, not 5-6

Hey, it looks like things are working out just fine for both teams. Merriman and Castilo are pretty good rookies. Plus San Diego will most likely trade Phillip Rivers for a first rounder (plus a player or other picks) this off season. Let's review: NY Jints got Eli and the Bolts when it is all said and done will get 3 first round picks plus players/other picks for trading away the first pick in the draft. Hmmmm...sounds like good value to me. Actually, it looks like the trade worked out well for both teams. Kerry Collins isn't exactly tearing up the league in Oakland, now is he?

If the Bears and the Colts ended up in Detriot this area would be elated. I am a big Dolfan but began my life in Baltimore. 41, 19, 78 and others were my favorites. Shula left and I followed. Hey look at Baltimore in 2000. Orton's just a rookie, give him a break. Also, the same criticism I hear about Michael Vick. If the guy wins who cares. Ben Roethlisberger wasn't exactly putting up Dan Marino stats last year but they won a lot of games.

stevo137
12-07-2005, 09:35 AM
I'm not trying to be critical of him Brian and understand that he's a rookie. My point was that just think of how good they could be if they had a better QB at this point. The defense and running game is winning the games and I'm not sure that you can get to the superbowl with a QB that is playing like Orton at this point.
We'll just wait and see at playoff time.

12-07-2005, 09:55 AM
Alright you Bears fans answer me this. Adrian Peterson is avg 5 + yards per carry. The only game he really got a lot of touches he went for 127 yds or something like that. Then they put him on the front page of chicagobears.com talking about saving the running game, the next week only a couple of touches. Why won't they give him the ball? I know he is a free agent at the end of the year are they trying to keep his cost down by not letting out his ability?

Went to College with AP and he is a good kid and an amazing running back.

Bri,
As a displaced Bears Fan (Chicago Born, raised in the Lake county) I appreciate the encouragement. I'm lovin' the season so far, but I'm not counting any chickens yet. The defense is winning, the offense is just not losing. Like Stevo, I would also like to see a better QB.

For you Bears guys, this is from Peter King's MMQB Tuesday Edition.
MMQB (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/peter_king/12/06/mmqbte/index.html)

GREG IS ON THE BALL UP THERE IN THE NORTH COUNTRY. From Greg of Minneapolis: "Is there any difference between the 2005 Chicago Bears and the '01 Bears, who won games all year without the benefit of an offense but fell flat on their faces in the playoffs?''

Greg, that is not a good question ... it is a great question. At first blush, I would say the defense is slightly better this year, more opportunistic, with better bookend pass-rushers now (Adewale Ogunleye and Alex Brown) than four years ago (Philip Daniels, Bryan Robinson). And this is the biggest difference: In 2001, Chicago got a bye in the first round of the playoffs, then waited at home for their first foe. The Eagles, far better than the Bears that year, came in and destroyed them, 33-19. This year, there's no divisional foe like that who will come to Soldier Field. In my opinion, the Panthers or the Giants, likely the first-round opponent for Chicago, are not the Eagles of '01. But the reason that question is so good is because the teams are similar. Weak quarterbacking (Jim Miller, Kyle Orton), a 1,000-yard back the team was trying to replace (Anthony Thomas, Thomas Jones), one productive receiver (Marty Booker, who, remember, had a 100-catch season in '01, Muhsin Muhammad), and a suffocating defense. So many of the points were scored by the defense. The difference, again, is that the NFC was much stronger that year -- St. Louis and Philly were clearly better than Chicago -- and I don't think you can say any NFC team is clearly better than the Bears this year.

I was listening to Sirius NFL radio today and they were talking playoff possibilities. One was that their is a very, very good chance that if New England wins the wildcard weekend and Cinncy (assuming they are the 3rd seed) wins, that New England would go to Indy for the divisional round. I'm not sure I'd bet against New England. For the Colts and Manning that has to be their worst nightmare and it is looking more and more likely. Look, Colts play the Seahawks the SECOND to last game. They play the Cards the LAST game. Then they will have a bye in the first round. Assuming the Colts sit everyone and loose to the Seahawks and then beat the Cards with their JV team, it still will be 3 weeks since the Colts would have "been worked by the Hawks." I'm sure that that game will have been long forgotten and they will be looking toward their show-down with Mr. (I went to Michigan because I wasn't good enough for the Buckeyes) Brady, at which point they will loose the then the road to Detroit will run directly THROUGH THE JUNGLE BABY.

First, I didn't say that there were any Buckeyes QB's that were better than Brady.

Next, the best "big game" QB ever? Surely your just regurgitating something that your heard on some sad sports show. You can't honestly think that tom brady is that good. He is a recycled Phil Simms at best. I can think of numerous QB's that tom brady couldn't hold their sweaty jock. Elway, Montana (as much as I hate him), Young, Marino, Dawson, Fouts, Anderson (that might be a stretch, hey I'm a Bengals fan), Graham, Unitas, Favre...just to name a few that are WAY out of brady's league. The only reason that brady has the record in the playoffs that he has is because of Belechek, period.

In all honesty, I have to say that my fervent opposition to brady being put up with the greats stems from where he attended college (hey I bleed Scarlet and Gray). But comparing him to Simms is a fair analysis. He runs a safe offensive shceme that most above average QB's could operate effectively. It makes my blood boil to hear his name in the same sentence as Elway, Bradshaw, Manning, or Marino.

By the Way, I agree with you BriEOD, Marino is in the top 3 all time, no question. I really wanted to see him get a ring before he retired, he deserved it.

Hey man you brought up the Buckeyes not I. Neither Michigan or Ohio State are my team. You said that Brady wasn't good enough to go to Ohio State. Your team could have only been so lucky.

Second, yep you are probably right. I am "regurgitating" something Peter King wrote or something I saw on ESPN or Inside the NFL. Let me reiterate that I am not a Brady fan or a Favre fan for that matter, but both are good QB's. I also said "arguably." IMO Dan Marino is the greatest QB of all times. However, because he never won the big one many might argue that Montanta or Bradshaw is the best. But, to call Brady recycled Phil Simmis ... you're stretching dude. Look what the guy has done this year with Corey Dillon being hurt, mediocre receivers and a banged up "D." He is a legitimate MVP canindate. Your opinion is certainly you are own, but give the guy his due. He won 3 SB's. Belichick is great, but someone has to run the plays...
Bri, I was lucky enough to see Marino and Montanna in the Super Bowl in SF at Stanford! What a site, even though our Fins got barbecued'! I did wear my Dolphins shirt with pride all the way to the end!

Steelers vs Bungels should be a good game.

Lets see......
Both teams had a record of 11-5. Bungels won division on having more division wins.
Head to head both teams lost at home.
Combined score of both games, Steelers 58, Bungels 51.

I give the edge to the Steelers.

Sorry guys, we have waited 15 years for this, were not going to blow it to Pits-puke. The Bengals have grown up since these teams played the first time. Bengals will win by 4, 34-30. I have Sirius Satellite Radio and listen to the NFL Channel a lot. He is on almost every day and he is often wrong in his analysis and predictions. Hey, he is a former receiver (TE, whatever) and basis his analysis on past games and stats instead of what is current.

And yea, that video is probably a little premature and a bit hookey, but WE won the division, not $hits-burg. When you win the division your team is more than welcome to make any goofy video they want. I can see it now, Worthlessburger, the 'bus', Heinz Ward, and Polamalu dancing around with a HUGE Ketchup bottle in Heinz Field! Nice Stadium sponser! I hear they keep a big bottle of ketchup on top of the stadium. Are they going to change it next year and put up...say...a bottle of Heinz great tasting mustard. Or how about a bottle of their relish. Oh no, wait! How about one of those nifty 'Picnic Packs' that has all three!!!!

I have to add an interesting fact about "getting whupped on by the Squeelers", in 1998 my Bengals were 3-13. A very dissappointing season to say the least. However, two of those wins came against the Squeelers, :D and the second time they beat Pits-puke that season it kept them out of the playoffs. I guess you have to look at the good in ALL things, despite being 3-13 I was more than happy that it kept the Steelers on thier couches for the post-season. OK, MarkP, I won't grow up on this issue.

Thanks Kimo. As you can see, he has his arm around Carsons leg and has his shoulder on his knee. Not intentional my rear end!!

Watch the replay and see the lineman losing position and push him into Palmer. You can't tell me that it was on purpose knowing that they were teammates and watching his reaction when VanOldehoffen saw he was still down.

This makes me cringe just reading it. What a shame, a great player. I hope he makes it back...

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Carson Palmer's knee injury was "devastating and potentially career-ending," involving numerous ligament tears, a shredded ligament, damaged cartilage and a dislocated kneecap, his surgeon said Thursday.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback tore ligaments in his left knee when he was hit by Pittsburgh's Kimo von Oelhoffen on his first pass during the Steelers' 31-17 playoff victory Sunday.

The team announced that he had torn the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. The damage was much more extensive and severe, but Dr. Lonnie Paulos said surgery went well and Palmer could be back for the start of the season.

Palmer had surgery Tuesday in Houston. Doctors used grafts from other parts of his body and donated tissue to fix the damage during an operation that lasted more than two hours. Palmer headed back to California on Thursday to do his rehabilitation.

"It's not just like it was a torn ACL," Paulos said Thursday, in a phone interview from Houston. "It's a magnitude more difficult to recover from and repair. It can and has ended careers, without a doubt.

"However, I feel very comfortable with Carson as an athlete and the heart that he's got. In the end, that's the bottom line. I can see the look in his eye already. He's ready to get going."

Paulos, an orthopedic surgeon who has worked with the U.S. Ski Team since 1983, replaced the anterior cruciate ligament, which runs through the middle of the knee and provides stability. He said the medial collateral ligament, which runs along the side of the knee, was damaged "real bad."

"On a scale of 1 to 3, it was a 4," he said. "It was off the chart. It was pretty badly damaged -- shredded is the better term."

The kneecap dislocated when Palmer was hit, damaging tissue around it. There also was some cartilage damage, he said.

Paulos was able to repair the knee without removing pieces of cartilage or soft tissue, a good sign.

"The things that were torn could be repaired," he said. "They were not torn beyond repair. So he's got all his parts in there, which is good. We're optimistic, actually."

If rehabilitation goes well, Palmer could be running in a couple of months and might be able to play in the first regular season game, Paulos said. The 2006 schedule hasn't been set.

Palmer has worn a protective brace on the left knee since he sprained it near the end of the 2004 season. The knee bowed inward on von Oelhoffen's hit even though Palmer was wearing the brace,

"The brace didn't function well in this environment and should have done better than it did, frankly," Paulos said.

The plan is for Palmer to wear more substantial braces on both knees when he returns.

"No brace is perfect," Paulos said. "No brace can prevent every injury, but they do help."

Paulos saw the replay of the injury and wasn't surprised at the extent of the damage it caused. Palmer has absolved von Oelhoffen, saying he didn't think the lineman was trying to hurt him. The lineman said he was trying to sack Palmer, not injure him. He wasn't penalized for the hit.

Palmer made the Pro Bowl in only his second season as a starter, throwing an NFL-leading 32 touchdown passes. The club extended his contract through the 2014 season.

Jon Kitna, who has been Palmer's backup and mentor the last two years, can become a free agent. Palmer's injury will force the Bengals to make sure they have another reliable quarterback on board.

I still don't think it was intentional.

I remember when Marino popped his Achilles in 93' I believe. Their was a lot of speculation he was done. Well after missing the rest of the season (Scott Mitchell was his backup at the time) he came back the next year and in the opener threw for 476 yds and 5 TDs to beat Drew Bledsoe and the Pats. It was awesome. It's no wonder the guy is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

NFL: Polamalu overturned interception the wrong call

Associated Press

<DIV class=text11 style="BACKGROUND: #fff">The NFL said the referee made a mistake: Troy Polamalu (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6352) caught the ball.

The league acknowledged Monday that referee Pete Morelli erred when he overturned on replay Polamalu's interception of a Peyton Manning (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4256) pass Sunday in the playoff game between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis.

Mike Pereira, the league's vice president of officiating, said in a statement that Morelli should have let the call on the field stand.

"He maintained possession long enough to establish a catch," Pereira said. "Therefore, the replay review should have upheld the call on the field that it was a catch and fumble."

After the reversal, made with 5:26 left in Pittsburgh's win over the Colts, Indianapolis went on to score a touchdown and a 2-point conversion, cutting the Steelers' 21-10 lead to 21-18. That led to a wild final few minutes, filled with unbelievable twists and turns, including Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4525)'s missed 46-yard field-goal attempt that clinched it for Pittsburgh.

On the play, Polamalu made a diving catch of Manning's pass, tumbled with it in his hands and got up to run. As he did, he fumbled the ball, then recovered. Colts coach Tony Dungy challenged the call, and Morelli ruled Polamalu had not completed the catch.

Had the call stood, the Steelers would have had the ball at their own 48 with an 11-point lead.

Shortly after the game, Morelli offered the following explanation:

"I had the defender catching the ball. Before he got up, he hit it with his leg with his other leg still on the ground. He never had possession with his leg up off the ground, doing an act common to the game of football. He was losing it while his other leg was still on the ground. Therefore, he did not complete the catch. And then he lost the ball. It came out, and so we made the play an incomplete pass."

Under league officiating procedure, an "act common to the game" is defined as controlling the ball long enough to hand it, pitch it or pass it. But Pereira noted that this definition only applies when there is "contact with a defensive player and the ball comes loose, which did not happen here."

The NFL almost never makes public the result of its reviews, although it did three years ago, when Pereira said officials should have called pass interference against San Francisco on the final play of a wild-card game with the New York Giants (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyg). The correct call would have given New York a second chance to kick a game-winning field goal in a 39-38 loss.

The call in Indianapolis incensed Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4723), who said after the game: "I know they wanted Indy to win this game; the whole world loves Peyton Manning. But come on, man, don't take the game away from us like that."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello had no comment on Porter's statement.

In the past, players who have made such statements have been subject to fines.

Polamalu's overturned interception wasn't the only unusual call. Earlier in the game, when the Steelers were preparing to go for a fourth-and-inches from the Pittsburgh 48, two Colts defensive lineman ran across the line of scrimmage, pointing at the Steelers as if one of the linemen moved.

The officials stopped the game, but called no penalty.

Replays appeared to show Alan Faneca (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4288) barely flinched. But Steelers coach Bill Cowher argued the Colts made contact with the linemen, which would have forced an offside call and a first down. Instead, Ben Roethlisberger (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6770) ran a quarterback sneak for a first down, which allowed Pittsburgh to use another 5:02 before punting.
