Hey guys,
I have a gentleman who has a 1971 MC Skier with the Holman Moody package that is looking to sell. I know these things are hard to come by but they are also hard to price. Looking for some input as far as value of the boat. It is not "mint", truly not even close to mint by new boat standards, but it is in excellent shape and looks to be mostly original other than the swim step and the second tracking fin that was added by the original owner pre 1984. Two owner boat, current owner purchased in 1984. Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the poor pics, boat is tucked away in a heated garage. Has been sitting for 8 years only being run on a hose occasionally.

That is an interesting boat. Any more details or documentation with it? Is that gel original? Were HIN's even used back then? Any value will be from a collector perspective IMO. Otherwise it's $5K boat. GLWS and keep us posted.

I couldn't find a HIN when I inspected the boat, but the owner swears there is one somewhere on the boat. He does have titles for both boat and trailer both stating 1971 as model year. Trailer is a home built and was made specifically for that boat so it makes sense to me. If the gel is not original, it was redone by the original owner and the current owner does not think that it was ever done.

Pretty sure it is. That boat has been for sale on and off for quite a while.

It is, seller was concerned that he was priced too low after receiving numerous calls on the boat after he lowered the price.

Interesting boat. Tall pylon, was it a ski show boat? Does he know who the original owner was? The boat's history could be of interest to a buyer.

Is that a Ford engine? I thought the Holman Moody engines were 302 Chevys?

I believe Holman Moody marinized Fords, 289,302, 351, 390 + 460's.

Ford basically originally had just two outside outfits that were under contract to sell & marine most all of their Ford base engines

Holman-Moody
&
Daytona-Interceptor

When Interceptor finally went out of business OMC , and later Pleasure Craft Marine (PCM) got the bulk of this Ford marine engine business using Ford base engines.

Finally, a few years ago, Ford stopped selling the old school iron small block series of engines they also stopped their supply of base engines to marine engine builders.

Holman Moody worked on a handful of different engines. The pylon is the standard pylon. Wrong font on the Mastercraft (80's) and I don't think the stars belong there.

Darn clean though.

I believe this is a 302. I will check with the seller to see if he remembers who he got it from. He said the previous owner lived on Lake Geneva (southern Wisconsin) and was kept in a boat house there. This being said, I doubt it was a ski show boat, at least when it was purchased. Also, look at images of the original 1969 MC and note ski pylon height. Not sure why they were so high back then, I was made in the 80's. haha

Here are a couple pics, one of the Holman Moody insignia (you can see the HM eagle placard has been painted over), and the trans serial plate.

This is mostly true, but by '71, there were several other marinizers who were doing Fords. Conquerer-Crusader and Palmer were 2 of them. H-M was a Ford race/specialty shop at that point, I do not believe they worked on anything else- certainly not Chevy 302's.

The details I see on the engine line up with the ~71 model year. Shortly thereafter (late '72 or '73), H-M added the circ pump. It is surely a 302- too narrow to be a 351w and 289's seemed to be phased out by sometime in '68 or '69 (in marine engines).

I'm no MC expert, but I see other non-original items like the steering wheel and speedometers. The observer seat frames appear to be original- MC was still using the same ones that CC had offered in the late 60's.

Boat is in Illinois. Price has been anywhere from 9k-15k from what I understand. Please any details on originality would be appreciated as I am certainly no expert on vintage MC's. I figured I would learn quite a bit putting it in here before it went to the for sale section.

MC was not using HIN numbers in 1971. Observer seat is not original to the boat, but a few years newer.

Do you think the observers seat was more like this one?

Pretty sure I saw it listed last fall for $7200. It was getting close to a price that I would have gone to look it over, as I recall it started at $14000 and gradually came down throughout the course of a year or so. It was in Oregon, IL at that time.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I wanted to know your thoughts before I told the owner if he was even close on price. The boat is for sale and I have pictures of most all of the flaws on the boat. Shoot me a PM if you want details. I decided not to take the boat on consignment, just forward potential buyers to the owner. I honestly don't think he will sell the boat to someone who doesn't appreciate the history of it, he is very attached to it. I will put an ad in the for sale section soon.
