View Full Version : Those of you with F150's

I'm looking at getting a new vehicle, and the F150 is a high contender on my list. I want the FX4 model for the heavier duty suspension (is this right?). I'm trying to stay under $25k and looking to get into as few miles as possible with the newest model I can find.

Question is, for those of you who have had an 04-08 model, and also an 09+ model, did you notice a big difference going from the 4 speed to the 6 speed auto? I'd really like an 09+, I just have to find a deal to stay in my budget and not have 100k+ miles on the thing. It's ridiculous how well these trucks hold their value right now.

Right now I'm looking at an 08 FX4 with 56k miles on it, or an 09 Lariat with 65k miles on it. The 08 is asking $20k, I'd probably offer 18k. The 09 is asking $25K (which is a great price), but I'd still probably try to knock a little off that and offer $23k. Is the 09 worth the extra 5-7 grand even with the extra mileage? I know the Lariat is a higher trim, and it's the refreshed model which is why I'm asking. Any opinions/suggestions?

'09 is the newer style right? If it has the 5.0 with 6 speed instead of the 5.4 with 4 speed I'd look into that one.....worth the extra coin for sure. The 5.0 tows great and gets good mpg from what I've read.

'08 and older style didn't look as nice (to me)....resale will drop faster than the new style IMHO.

Make sure you look at what gear ratio both have (for towing) 3.55 or higher would be best.

09 still had the 5.4L in it, they just switched to the 6-speed. I think the 5.0 debuted in 2011 or thereabouts.

I can't help you with much but why buy a used truck when you can get a new one for 12-13k off of sticker, get new car financing vs. used car rates? Fairway Ford out by me has all of their remaining '13 models priced like this. Just a thought. You're a good 10-12 hours from me but what better way to break in a new truck?

I currently have a '13 F150 with the 3.5 V6 and 6 speed. It's the best towing truck I ever owner!!!! Probably the most important feature you should look for is the towing mirrors which are by far the best mirrors available, after that you'll want the 3.73 gears in the towing package.

I don't know if the FX4 package gives you higher rate rear springs, but with a properly set up trailer you aren't looking at much tongue weight anyway.

Over the years between work and personal use I've driven the following trucks on daily basis and this F150 is hands down the easiest. '96 F250, '01 F250, '04 F350, '06 Chevy 1500, '13 Chevy 1500 & '13 F150. Between the mirrors, the awesome 6 speed auto with gear selection, the backup camera, and the towing package this truck makes it an absolute pleasure to tow.

You may want to consider a left over '13 just to get the better mpg of he the V6 and the 6 speed auto.

The 5.4L has a couple of notorious issues with them that you might want to verify if possible. Spark plugs like to blow right out of the heads on them. Also replacing spark plugs are next to impossible. Trying to change them you will end up braking at least 2 of the 8. Which then means you have to pull the heads to get the broken plugs out. The other issue with the 5.4 is the rear most exhaust manifold bolt will corrode and then break causing an exhaust manifold leak. In order to fix it you need to lower the engine off the two rear engine mounts to get the exhaust manifolds changed. From what I understand it is about a $3000 repair on the engine.

The spark plug exploded out of my 2002 F150 with about 70,000 miles on it. My 2006 had the exhaust manifold bolt break at about 90,000 miles. Luckily for me my buddy is a Ford mechanic so I only had to pay him the parts ($700) and the labor was paid for with Jack Daniels.

If you can get a 6 speed they are better transmissions than the 4 speeds are. Well worth finding a 6 speed over the 4 speed. The 6 speed transmissions are bullet proof. My 2006 busted a snap ring in the transmission 2 days after I sold it. One little snap ring required an entire tranny rebuild.

Make sure you get a truck with a 3.73 rear end in it, especially if you plan on towing. My 2006 had a 3.55 and it had to down shift to go up gradual grades on the interstate. Typically the 3.55 rear end came with the 20" wheel option.

If you can find a truck with a 5.0 L vs a 5.4L you will be better off. The 5.0 gets better gas mileage. If I set the cruise at 72 mph I can get 17.5-18.0 mpg with my 2012 with the 5.0. If you knock it down to 68 you will get around 19 mpg. The 5.4 could never get over 15.5 mpg. If I am in the 55-60 mph range I will get over 20 mpg.

You can get an FX4 setup almost the same as a Lariat. My 2006 and 2012 are FX4s and I think they were nicer inside than the Lariat. The main difference is that the leather interior and all the gadgets are included in the Lariat and you have to add them as options on the FX4. The thing I don't like about the Lariat is the fake would trim they use in the cab.

Good Luck on your search.

For the $25K range, you should be able to find a nice 2011 with a 5.0 and less than 40K miles. You can in Tampa, FL anyway.

x2. the 5.4 with the 4 speed would be sluggish. look for an 2011. my 2011 5.0 would have sold for 26 or so but no 4x4 with 30k

They make a tool kit for removing the broken plugs. Most auto parts stores have them, ranging from 80 to 100 bucks. My son has the Triton 5.4 and freaked out when he broke several of the plugs. Got the kit at Oreilly's and got the plugs out in no time. If he can do it, anyone can! :D

I have a 2013 FX4 with the 5.0L and the 6 speed and it tows great. I think it does have the 3.55 gears so it will down shift on large inclines while towing. My boat is a 2013 X-30 and I can tow it down the highway at 70 with no problems.

I have 2006 with the 5.4 and 4 speed. I have the 4x4 upper trim level, not fx4. It tows the crap out if my boat. Never a problem, ever while towing. Dont even know the boat is back there. Back end does not move or bounce even at 70mph.

That said, I hate the motor and tranny. I hate the 5.4 engine. Worst engine design I have ever seen. Some say it got better in later years, I would not take any chances. Many here have talked about the issues already. Cam phasers. Supposed to be fixed on mine, but they still make a ticking noise that sound like valve rattle. Spark plugs. Hope the fired the idiot that designed those. I too have the tool. Mine was $100 but divided by the 4 plugs I broke, that is only $25 each. The new plugs were over 100 for the set. Solenoids on the cam phasers go out and are really sensitive to oil quality and quantity. Get a little low on oil and the engine can get off on timing. Tranny was rebuilt twice. First rebuild had defective pars that exploded a few months down the road.

I think the 5.0l with the 6 speed is good advice. I think they just pushed the 5.4l a bit too far.

I still hate my 5.4l, did I mention that?

I put a lift on a 2013 fx4 last night, 5.0 fully loaded. I've drove it a little today and I'm a gm guy, but it really makes me consider a new 1/2 ton ford if I could afford it. I don't know what I would do without my diesel though http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/13/ha4enane.jpg that's a terrible picture, I'll get a better one when I get it off the alignment rack

I sold my 97 F-150 with the 5.4L a few years back after 200,000 trouble free miles. An alternator and one coil pack was the only thing done to it other than routine maintenance. I now have a 2009 F-150 King Ranch with the 5.4L and 6 speed trans with 70,000 miles. They both have been great tow vehicles and my only complaint with the 6 speed is that it likes to downshift between the two high gears a lot and there is no way to lock out the 6th gear while towing. The tow/haul mode only changes the shift points slightly.

Yeah there's very few vehicles I can find right now that meet my criteria. Thanks for the insight everyone... sounds like I'm going to boost my budget a little and look for a 5.0L with the 6 speed. Or at the very least a 5.4 with 6 speed.

there is a dealer in Des Moines IA that would have a 5.0L used with about 80K miles. He buys them from Pioneer HB and resells, they are highway miles and great condition. PM me if you want the number and info. It would also have the 6 speed with towing package

No I dont. It goes in sometime soon to get the line-x in the bed, and to spray the undercarriage with whatever they spray it with. Those were the only 2 accessories I bought. I've been looking around for a tonneau though.

I have had a couple Truxedo and Access covers. Been happy with both. I haven't run an open box for years and don't ever plan to. Had a glass cover for a while on a previous truck. Too much work to put anything big in the truck.

My buddy just bought a 2013 Eco Boost, its a pretty sweet pickup. Unless I was going to drive it daily or a few times a week. I don't see the need to spend the extra $$$ for the Eco boost. It seems to only get 10mpg pulling a boat in hilly terrain. Plus the big hole in the bumper that is wide open to the intercooler looks like an invitation to give ford more hard earned money for a new intercooler as soon as it fills full of grasshoppers, mud etc.... not too mention I don't think these engines will go 200k w/o needing work on the turbos. I'm not sold on high strung boosted small displacement engines.

Almost bought a new one this month because of 10k worth of incentives but decided I don't want a payment on a vehicle i just want to get the boat around while its on a trailer.

Seems like a good time to buy the market seems to be flooded with used trucks and still alot of nice new factory incentive rigs out there.

Problem is, the supra isn't perfect... so what I could buy with the profits would be a few model years older for an MC. Also probably not as well equipped. Ah well, Supra works well for now. I still have my MC banner hanging over my boat in the storage unit haha.
