View Full Version : Removing the exhaust tips?

Anyone removed their 2007 year model exhaust tips? My Left side exhaust tip lost the inside part completely... Welding seams had cracked at some point. I have a new exhaust tip, but would like to get some pointers how to go about the job of removing the old and replacing it with the new tip.:)

I have not done it but I heard piano wire and a heat gun on inside of the tip to make the adhesive softer are the way to go. I bought a spare pair that were offered on this site in anticipation of a failure. would be very interested to hear what your experience is getting those bad boys off is.

Curious-what was the deal with the tips? Was there a new sound regulation and this was a band aid to meet spec until a design change could be made?

No actually the tips were about perfect at least from my experience. Problem was keeping them in one piece from what I can tell.

I will probably take up this project in few weeks time if I have the energy and surely will post some pics on this site. Also curious what sealant people have used when putting the new one(s) in. What does MC use? Maybe a SIKA PRODUCT... I HAVE Replaced the entire rudder in 2006 to my xstar and then I had to use a heat gun and force to remove the housing. No piano wire at that time...

I was told it was 3M 5200.

I used 5200 when I added my tips. But 4200 should work fine and I used that on my lights.
Before and after shots..
