View Full Version : How Stable is your Z5?

For those with the Z5 cargo rack on the zft4 towers, how sturdy is it mounted? I got mine back last week, and it sure seems flimsy. 30mph, slight head wind, and the nose of the rack moves a couple inches and just seems plain flimsy. I understand the design has something to do with it, being cantilevered, but wondering whats every one else experiences. Also, does anyone have (or can take) pics of the tower connections of the z5? Thanks.

Also looking into this option for a 2014 on a ZFT4 tower. Anyone have pics of the tower folded down with the Z5 (if it is even possible) or experience towing at highway speeds with the Z5?

When I first saw the Z5 on the web site I could not help but wonder about the stresses from wind that would be getting put on that. I asked two very good engineers here at work what they thought and they too were worried about wind forces lifting on boards causing stress down through the tower in a twisting motion. I wonder if anyone actually ran the loads through a program like SolidWorks to see what the stresses would be?

I would add that just last week a friend and I were able to lose an entire ~150 pound stack of foam out of the back of a pickup truck all because 8" of the stack stuck up behind the cab of the truck. At ~55 mph the entire stack flipped up and out the back of the truck. Yes we were idiots for not tying it down, but it also taught us that forces at speed are VERY strong.

Bump. Would love to know how the tower folds, if at all, with the Z5 bimini.

Thank you! Looks like you may lose a few inches of clearance for the bracket that holds the Z5 but not too much. Do you know if you can tow with the tower and bimini in the down position or only in the upright position?

The pic shows boat in tow on a Hwy. look at the pic and theres a support holding the front of the Z5 bimini from moving
BTW Travis at The Boarding School uses a Z5 on their XStar

If you look close it has tie-downs that go from the front of the Z5 to the cleats on the boat. These come with the top and are for towing. To my knowledge you only tow w/ the Z5 in the down position.

Correct. To fold the tower and bimini, you would unscrew the knobs on each side of the mounting arms, fold the tower, screw the knobs into new holes, and tie town the front end of the z5 to the cleats. Tows fine when both are folded.

Noone else here has the Z5 and can answer the stability questions?
