View Full Version : Oil and filter questions

I am doing my first oil change on my own. The engine builders said I must use a racing oil with zinc in my engine or a plain oil with an additive like Lucas oil treatment that has zinc in it. I have VR1 10w30. Is the racing oil enough or should I add Lucas also?

Does anyone have any experience with Bosch filters? The filter I have will fit but it is much smaller than the one on it currently (length). It has a motor craft filter now. I just began to change my own oil in my truck and boat and at the store the Bosch filters were the ones that I found to be the best (reading the packages). After some reading online several different people bashed the Bosch filters claiming they let everything pass through. I changed the oil in the truck tonight and was going to do the boat in the AM. The ones purchased are Bosch Distance Plus. The same size for my v10 ford and my 351w.
Thanks for your time,

VR-1 10w30 has plenty of zinc already no need for an additive. I use in my 351w VR-1 20w50 for the higher shear strength with a motorcraft FL-1A filter, also use a mobil1 filter in the 5.4L F-150, no experience with a bosch filter.

I also use Valvoline VR-1 20w50 with a Motorcraft FL-1A filter.

Do a search on "oil filter reviews". There are a few individuals who did independent tests on filters by using them and cutting them apart. I don't recall how bosch faired, I do know that Fram was one of the worst; with Mobil 1 and K&N among the best.

Oil and Filter threads run amuck, search those too.

Bob is the oil guy (forum) says they are a good filter. Similar in design to a Honda internally supposedly.

I use Napa Gold (Wix) in everything I own. I buy bulk from fleetfilter.com

I also use Valvoline VR-1 20w50 with a Motorcraft FL-1A filter.

Me, too. FL-1A is a fine filter.
