Are you just looking at surf...

At that price the older X30 is going to be king. With a newer style 06 X2 being just above that price range being a close 2nd. Quite honestly tho, in that price range you can get a much more surf specific boat/wave from another MFG that will beat any MC with a 40k price tag. MC really didn't hit surf spot competition/focus til 2012-2013. Will their boats surf? All of them will get you ropeless just about. However if you are looking for progression and a surf performance oriented wave pre 2012-13 MC kind of lacks.

I second that for the '06-'11 x30 & new-hull X2 reco. But would add the '04+ W23LSV and CC220, CC236 to that list. Search youtube to see some of the surf wakes. I'm not sure how the '04+ Xstar is, but have been surprised to see a batch of them swinging in under $40k. Could be worth a look. I hear some Centurions and MBs do really well in that price range but don't know enough to reco a model.

Thx for the info I heard that mc is more of a wakeboard / ski boat. Unless you have 80000 to spend.

Of course. And a surf machine. Most underrated surf boat out there.

Funny u guys bring that up I think for a 21ft boat the new 07 plus 210 surfs really well. It's steep with nice pocket on both sides.

OK, dumb question since it's a ski boat designed for minimal wake but.... can one surf ropeless behind a 197? I'm sure that, if at all possible, it would require some ballast and creative weight distribution. I think I remember reading here about someone doing it but can't remember (or maybe I was dreaming).

Reason I'm asking is that a minor back injury is forcing me to give up slalom skiing, at least temporarily (hopefully not permanently, we'll see...). I figured that surfing would be a good low impact way to still enjoy my boat. It's a 2003 197 with Powerslot and heavy LQ9 engine.

Yes you can do it but it will need a lot of ballast. The wave will be short. It's hard to do with a DD but it can be done. I would start with 1000lbs in the back corner. Then see where you will need to add weight.

Is this the thread you were thinking of?

Probably this:

Oh, I thought you said $4,000.

But seriously, I know it's a DD but it's hard to imagine a 24' w/ 454 couldn't make a pretty awesome wave with the right ballast. It certainly wouldn't lack the torque and space to handle 3,500+ lbs.
