View Full Version : Does this alignment see normal?

I just want some opinions of my rudder, strut and propshaft alignment.

I've replaced the strut with a new one from skidim and the shaft is straight, we checked it at work and it's straight and when I rotate it by hand the transmission coupling side does not move sideways.

I've read that it is normal that the rudder is offset and I can see that it is in the molding of the fiberglass but the prop seems to far to the starboard side.

Here are a few pics:

You can see how far my transmission is off to the port side and it has farther to go to align it. There was no adjusting when I installed the strut, can it be shimmed?

Any help, pics or advice would be appreciated!!!

Thanks, Steve

I don't have my boat at home at the moment (or for the next month), or I'd go out and take a picture for you. You'll have to get pictures from someone else.

The rudder should be offset, but from your pictures the offset appears larger than I remember.

p.s. Just took another look at your pictures - it may be a lens artifact, but in the third picture down the strut does not look straight. It looks like it has a definite curve to the right. You might want to go out and see if it looks straight in person.

Thanks for the pic, that does look about the same.

I guess I'm also worried because of how far the trans is over to the port side.

Perfectly normal, the rudder is offset from the factory, It's off center so it's not sitting in the pocket of air directly behind the prop that turns into prop wash, and to minimize torque steer and ease od prop removal.

Don't worry about the mounts, it's all about how the transmission flange & the driveshaft flange line up. There are some pretty good threads on here about how to do it propery.

My transmission mounts are a lot more centered; But I think that as long as you can get it to align, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Take a look at where the shaft is entering the boat from the outside. It should be near the center of the hole. I would not go any further trying to align the motor that far out. Your packing gland is going to rub and make a weird hum at idle speeds and could wear a groove into the shaft. Plus your boat won't turn so well to the right and flip a u turn to the left way to easily. The rutter is offset from the shaft. Its a MC thing. But it is nice when you have to remove the shaft and not the rutter as well. I would make sure the strut is mounted properly. I alway buy my rutter ports, and struts from an MC dealer. Not saying to bend the strut into alignment but I 've seen it done before. From the look of your picture you have no more room to adjust on the sliding mounts. Mike

I know this may be a bit late, but you mentioned (and photoed) in your restoration thread that the hole where the shaft log is is off center to the port side of the boat as well, so that my be what you are seeing at the transmission mounts.

Yes, the shaft log was installed off center from the factory:

Mike,

I ordered the strut from Skidim and they had it drop shipped from the manufacture. Is grinding of a strut required before installing a strut? There did not seem to be any adjustment in it, it sat right in the fiberglass pocket. Do you think MC has their own supplier for the struts?

Any advice or input is appreciated!!
