View Full Version : 8.1L Oil Change and Maintenance

Bought 05 XStar in April '12 with ~200 hours on 8.1L Indmar. I've had marine mechanic change oil every 50 hours, but I'm planning to do myself this weekend. Also planning to change spark plugs, oil filter, and filter in fuel pump.

I'm reasonably sure my stern drain plug is seized, so need to deal with that first. I know I had plug out over winter, but it didn't budge a few weeks ago with a wimpy wrench. I have a larger wrench this time, so hoping this will solve problem. If not, any other good tricks for removing stern plug?

Once plug is removed, I believe there's an oil drain hose attached to oil pan that's long enough to go out stern drain hole. If I'm wrong and this isn't oil drain hose (or if stern drain plug isn't removed), I will have a pump to manually suck oil out of block. I think oil drain tube is to the right of bilge pump in center of picture with brass end.

I have no idea what brand previous 40wt oil's were, but was considering AMSoil or Royal Purple even though still requires changing at 50 hours. Any oil brand suggestions for 8.1L?

Also planning to change filter and spark plugs. I have a freezer baggy and oil filter wrench to aid with replacing oil filter with ACDelco PF454. I have 8 pack of ACDelco 41-983 platinum spark plugs, dieclectric connector grease, anti-seize thread lube, and socket wrench. Is a torque wrench and spark gap tool necessary?

Anything else I'm forgetting????

Regarding plug - why was it so darn tight... Throw some penetrating oil on there wait - repeat. Can you see the inside of the drain plug - if so hit with penetrating oil on both side...

regarding oil drain -- I agree...

Yep, that's the oil drain line. Just did this myself on my 8.1. Liquid wrench and a BIG wrench should get it. My plug had been replaced with a steel one that was all rusted, but it still came out. Replaced it with a new brass one. I changed the oil with Rotella, had to go to O'Riellys to get it. As for the spark plugs, you don't need a torque wrench, but it's always good to gap them correctly.

Also, on a side note, you need to flip your ballast pumps while you are in there. The brass pumps need to be on the bottom, so when they start leaking, they don't take out the pump all together. When you flip them, you also have to take the brass pump part loose(2 screws) and rotate it 180 degrees, and you don't have to do any rewiring. I went the extra little bit and polished them and put the green impellers in them also. Have fun!

How many quarts in a 8.1 ...

K-Man - good eye! I actually removed all three Jabsco pumps and tried to flip them but the black hose wasn't flexible enough to bend w/o causing a kink. I'm going to purchase more hose to replumb from manifold to pumps. Also have a sick sounding pump that needs servicing, but I'll save that for another thread.

Andre - 10 quarts of SAE 40 wt

Here's service bulletin link :

There is a service bulletin about running 10 quarts. I've posted it before. If you can't find let me know.

Oh, looks like someone already found it.

Same motor in an X-45. I use a K&N wrench-off oil filter since I've had a hard time with strap wrenches in the tight workspace.

I'm intrigued with having oil analyzed but dont know much about it. I'd be willing to part w/ $30-$50 for potentially diagnosing engine issues. Any TT'ers recommend a testing facility they've utilized w: good results?

Try a search for a thread titled, "what oil" or "which oil". There was a lot of discussion about oil analysis and where a user was sending their oil. Black Stone Labs??
