View Full Version : Possible to add electric brake bypass to drum brake '93 trailer?

I ordered the Trailer Buddy from Pacific Trailers that bypasses the brake line pressure when backing up but it shows a return line that only the disk brake actuator has. Any chance I could drill and tap my own return line to the reservoir? Anyone ever use one of these on an older drum brake trailer? I have to back up a pretty good incline and trying to keep the lockout piece in place drives me nuts. I can't ask someone else to bring my trailer back after launching if they have to go through this routine every time. I don't plan to go to disk brakes and if I have to get a new actuator I will but something tells me I can adapt what I have.

I cant speak towards adapting what you have, but I would think a simple tap into the brake fluid reservoir would allow the solenoid to work fine. I have the electric solenoid on my trailer and it works fantastically. I have never had a problem with the brakes when backing up.

Assuming you have a ufp tounge, it appears it will not work. Pacific Trailers website (http://www.pacifictrailers.com/UFP-Reverse-Solenoid-w/fittings-Back-up-Valve-34500/) says it only works with UFP Disc Brake Master Cylinder #34762. I dont know what lockout piece you have but the 2 options are this http://www.pacifictrailers.com/UFP-A-60-Top-Lockout-Upgrade-34359-A-60-Brake-Lockout-Cap-/ and this http://www.pacifictrailers.com/UFP-A-60-Side-Lockout-Bracket-34557-for-Brake-Actuator-backing/.

The return type disc brake master cylinder is supposed to work. I had installed one because one was sent to me by mistake when I ordered the standard one. Unfortunately the one I received was defective. So I made a custom clamp... took all of 5 minutes.. gotta love the grinder... and this one does not fall off.

If you use a C clamp to make it possible to back up your trailer .... you might be a redneck.

It snaps on and off easily.

If its a UFP assembly they do make a special cap that goes in the hole above where you add brake fluid.

You press the button and turn it thus locking out the brakes. When you go forward it automatically returns to normal braking position.

Maybe you already have this??? C clamps do a great job also.

I think they say it only works on the disk brake version since it has a return line already on it. I think I'm going to go for it and add a return line to see if it works. Worst case, I'll get a new one. I had read somewhere that I cannot use a disk brake actuator on a drum system since it creates too much pressure. I'll post pictures (I guess once we're able to) of my process. Should be interesting.

OK, I put a call in to Pacific Trailers, very helpful, and they said to try the version made by Titan, pa # 4748800 on their website. It's an inline valve that shuts off and does not have a return line. I have read that these were not the best way to go due to the pressure build up in the master cylinder. Once the gate is closed and then you back uphill or accidentally back into something, the excess pressure could damage the internals of the master cylinder. Part of me wants to modify what I have but common sense is saying to not experiment and risk the boat being down for awhile, especially in summer.

Seriously, the C clamp idea seems pretty good. I have the little tool that came with the UFP but it just falls out if it is not under pressure from backing. I attached it to a stiff wire and wrapped that around the trailer. When I put the block in place I pull and twist the wire and it all stays in place. Not the most convenient method but I only need it to back up the driveway at home.

Two inexpensive block magnets on either side of the post for that little tool will hold it in place.

Agree that the c-clamp idea is impressive. Fortunately, my Dorsey trailer has a switch that locks out the actuator.

I have one of those rubber bracelets (like the LiveStrong ones) around my hitch. It works great to hold the plug in.

Part of my OCD is that I just painted my trailer (see "small restoration of my MC trailer" in this section) and I don't want any scratches. I guess at least for now until I get a few rock chips down the road. The other part is that my lake cabin is in a hilly neighborhood and what something simple that I don't have to explain to someone what needs to be done, and that it has to be done going uphill so that the pin can be inserted before heading downhill... I have a 24' Chaparral that has the lockout and it is so nice just to drive and not worry about it. Otherwise, I had thought of the big rubber band concept and I like the magnet idea. It has me thinking!

I started a very similar discussion about this topic, so I am interested in where this thread will lead. However I do have one question, my trailer plug has 5 wires and my truck has only 4. Is it possible that the fifth wire is for a lock out of the brakes?

The 5th wire is for your lock out, and it hooks up to your reverse lights.

I have decided to go for modifying what I have with the bypass and not the shut-off by Titan. I'll let you know how it goes. Hope to have it off this Sunday.
