View Full Version : Changing out lug nuts

I am in the process of painting my wheels black and want everything blacked out, including the lug nuts.

With the recent influx of new trailers with black rims, would a dealer have black lug nuts I could buy? I would assume the size of the lugs really has not changed, but I could be wrong.

Or do you think I could just go with something like this?... http://recstuff.com/12-20x1381316chromeplatingtriplenickelforgedlugnut-3.aspx

The link looks as if the lugs would work, but they are only an inch deep and just doing a quick look at at my lugs they are about 1.25 inches deep (measured after using screw driver inside lug to determine inside depth)

Save yourself the headache and go to http://www.mcgard.com/

Buying cheap lug nuts is never a good plan, and these guys will have what you need.

Hope your paint sticks better than mine has, on season 2 and im already seeing a bit of peeling.

Yes they were prepped and cleaned, then sprayed with wheel paint. A 2 part paint would likely be the way to go.

Turns out I am a vendor for Excalibur lug nuts through one of my wheel sources. If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM or an email. They have chrome, black, blue and red.

I am doing a full prep myself with a light sanding. Then Rustoleum Self Etching primer, then two coats of Rustoleum black wheel paint, and completed with a coat of the rustoleum wheel clear coat. I am hoping this process will bode well.

You will have a tough time getting anything to stick well over chrome - even with sanding, etc. It may last a bit, but it is only temporary. Your best bet to paint would be to sandblast the lugs and remove the chrome, but then it is still just paint. Your first torque will mess up the contact points.

I agree! Which is why I am placing an order for new lugs from our good friend above!

Can anyone else chime in on the size of the lug nuts for my 2004 Trailer. I am almost assuming its half inch diameter. Dealer said the thread is 1.25.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Official word is MC was still running 1/2-20 lugs through 2012.

Note: Low profile MC trailers may have metric lugs.

1.25 would imply a metric lug and lug nut. I think I'd take one in somewhere and have the size verified.

Good call. Not all of mine were stamped, but i found 1 that certainly was stamped 1/2-20. HTe lug I had by my computer previously was not stamped.

Finally got my rims mounted back on the trailer. Thanks to Peter for getting me the black powder coated lugs. Fit was perfect and they look great. Did something a little different with the red oil hub covers. Also you will notice you do not see any silver of the oil hubs because i used vinyl tape to cover the outer piece around the window. Wanted to keep everything black. Really please with how everything turned out. Now we will see how they hold up.

(Glad we can finally post pictures)

Thanks! I am really loving the look so far. Glad I added the red in it too. Makes everything pop with red trailer and red boat.
