View Full Version : Seized Packing Nut

Anybody ever have one? Went to repack my drive shaft the other day and the packing nut and lock nut are seized together. It looks like the PO just kept tightening the two until he could not anymore. I have tried pb plaster and two pipe wrenches to no avail. Any suggestions? My next step is going to be pull the drive shaft but I would really like to avoid that till winter ha ha.

Put a little heat on it maybe, don't do this once you are putting it back together.

Use penetrant and be patient - let it do it's work.....there's probably some mineral deposit in there - then have some one help by tapping wrench with hammer to break it loose... and I ain't talking a sledge hammer ... ;) - you may want to get a packing wrench from skidim so you don't chew up the nut.

Heat always helps free stuck bolts. Apparently the cold opens up small cracks allowing the lubricant to seep in. I advise caution as the freeze stuff is pretty flammable. Probably not best for working in the bilge.

Might sound a little crazy but clr (calcium, lime and rust ) cleaner will melt the corrosion. be careful to not spill it. follow up with lube.
