I was recently told by my dealer that my dripless shaft seal went out and caused my shaft to warp. They also say my strut is probably bent due to the shaft. They agree nothing was hit in the water. the boats a 20011 x-7 with 316 hrs. mastercraft says theres nothing they can do. dealership wants $3000 for parts and labor. They said the strut was $1600 . does any of this make sense? Midwest mastercraft has 1.25 in. struts for under $500
I highly doubt the strut is bent due to the dripless seal going out. It ruining the shaft is even a stretch because if it went out it would most likely just leak water into the bilge. If it somehow didn't get enough water to cool the shaft it could damage the shaft but to get it hot enough to bend it somehow and then it damage the strut would be extremely unlikely to impossible.

That's kind of hard to believe.
The strut and shaft are in the water and being cooled by that water. That shaft is stainless steel and it would take a hell of a lot of heat to warp it. You would see steam coming off the shaft and the water would be boiling!!
Did something plug the water supply going to the dripless system? I could see were if the water supply was cut to the system it might scar up the shaft a little and the seal would fail. But once the seal fails you should have a gusher of water coming around it which would cool the shaft.
You can check with OJ props on the strut.
What prompted you to seek out service for the boat? Was it doing something wrong, noise, vibrations anything out of the norm?
I should have been clearer in my first response, the damage to the shaft from the seal going out might be some pitting or a slight groove which could cause you to need to replace the shaft to get a good seal. I don't see really anyway, practically impossible that damaged your strut. The heat I was referring to maybe could damage cutlas bearings and that's even a stretch because water will always being cooling shaft but CantRepeat is correct heat to warp steel and bend strut impossible well never say never but I'm pretty sure you would have noticed and been smelling it as fiberglass and rubber melt way before steel.
