Would someone please give me a little 101 lesson on the backup plug insert use on my 96 trailer? Do I really need to insert it every time I want to backup? Is there an overright? Any info and/or experience would be appreciated.

I only had to us iy when backing up a hill. IE baking up into my drive way. If you are backing up and the tires are not locking up you do not need it.

I've only ever used it once, backing up a steep hill. I back it in my driveway without using it and it's got a bit of a grade to it. In most cases you don't need to use it.

If your wiring harness has the electrical connection to the back up circuit, you never need to use the little "D" shaped tool. I have it on my trailer and the hitch wiring has it, so I have never used the insert. My dealer said the same as was said above, if you try to backup and the trailer won't move...then you need to insert the tool.
