I am looking to buy a new winch for my boat trailer which hauls a 91 Prostar 190. Can't decide on whether to get a 1,500 lb. or 2,000 lb. winch. I am guessing the boat loaded with fuel weighs about 3,000 lbs. I had read elsewhere to take this gross weight and divide that by 2 or 2.5 to get the appropriate winch rating. Seems my boat is borderline with either the 1,500 to 2,000 lb. winch. What are your thoughts or what are you using for a similar boat setup?

Thanks!

Since your prostar weighs 2,450 lbs, your loaded boat weighs 4,300? I would say go with the 2,500 lb winch. Boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1.

Scratch the 4,300 lbs. Thanks for catching that. I miscalcalculated my numbers. Instead of 183 lbs of fuel I added another zero for 1830 lbs of fuel. :uglyhamme

I was thinking loaded down with fuel and other misc. weight on the high end would be about 2700-2900 lbs. Rounding up to 3,000 lbs. I think that I should be ok with a range of 1,500-1,800 lb. winch.

Any thoughts on a particular winch or brand?

Can't go wrong with Fulton, mine currently is a Dutton 1,600 lb. capacity OEM to a Dorsey trailer.

My recommendation would be to get a winch with dual drive, i.e. gears on both sides of the winch spool.

Hi Guys, over here in OZ and looking to get both a fulton jack and fulton winch brought in as they are supposedly better quality than what we have here. Wide track jack, but is the 3200lb winch overkill? or do I just get the 2000lb version. Is there a size difference? Any help would be much appreciated. I always go by the motto 'bigger is better', at least that is what my wife likes about me :)

Upgraded to the 3200 and definitely worth it, although my boat is an x25. Second the fulton thought.....

Boat-weight-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. so unless your prostar weighs 6400lbs the 3200 lb winch is overkill. a 2000lb winch is more than enough for you boat unless it weighs more that 4000 lbs.

Thanks guys, pulled the pin on the 2000lb version. A lot easier to ask than spend an hour on the internet researching it. Have fun.......
