I cannot find any direct thread..

But looking to redo the carpet in my 85 S&S ... Will I get blasted if i redo with different color than what was in the boat by Purists lol... or can anyone direct me to a good replacement look for it and how to generally take it out and replace it...

Should i just rip it up ?
Do i need to soak it in anything??
Can i just he old carpet if it comes up nice as a template.. ??

Here is a pic of the color scheme

Why would you want to change cord since the boat is black and white?

I don't think you would get blasted for going gray. Good luck with the project.

Carpet should come up pretty easily if it's original. Mine pulled right up out of my '88 PS200. Only had to do minor scraping with a carpet scraper, wiped down the floor with mineral spirits then cleaned with Windex to remove any residue.

Hopefully the old carpet comes up in tact so you have templates for cutting out the new pieces.

I used indoor/outdoor carpet glue from Home Depot (recommended by MikeyOrange88) and applied it with a carpet glue trowel. Also use the mineral spirits to clean up any excess glue.

Several good sources for marine carpet out there and they'll send you free samples.

Here's a few pics from my recently completed carpet replacement:

I pulled all the carpet out of my 83 last fall. I'm honestly surprised it didn't all go flying out of the boat while towing it down the road. Needless to say it came out very easy! If you are replacing it yourself, be careful removing the old stuff so you have a good template. Also what colors are you considering? If i would have black carpet in my boat i probably would, just because it will appear to be less dirty. :twocents:

Considering black... if anyone has any sample pics of their boats id consider.. But I have seen like a grey and black mix that looks good.

This is one of my project for the summer. The carpet is beginning to separate from the floor and should come out fairly easily. While I'm at it, I'm going to replace the floor...it's spongy in areas and needs to be done.

Im replacing ours this summer as well. Right now it's a charcoal color and I will be going back with a much lighter gray. The black is WAY too hot in the sun.

When I replaced the carpet on the "other" boat 2 years ago, I went to the local carpet store. They had a huge selection, the salesman was really knew his stuff, and the price was better than anywhere else. The "other" boat gets used a lot, including musky fishing tournaments, and the carpet is still fantastic.

Black carpet would be awful: it would show EVERY speck of lint, dirt, crumbs, etc and also be hot. Charcoal gray wouldn't be much better. A nice medium gray, as boring as it is, would be your best bet, IMHO.

Bought mine from Boat Carpet Central. 20 ounce cut pile. Preferred the navy blue in mine vs. grey. I think the Midnight (black/grey) would look great in your boat. And yes, the darker carpet does show lint and crumbs more but I can live with it.

You should be able to search carpet and get loads of info from other posts (including mine). I got samples from Overton's and Corinthian Marine Carpet (which is what I used). I changed mine from a dark blue to a medium grey patterned carpet. I wanted to upgrade the look a bit. I used the 28 oz. Greystone carpet.

I used approx. 25 ft. x 8.5' width for an '88 Tristar. If the carpet you decide on only comes in a 6-foot width, you'll need more length since you can't get both 'halves' out of the single 6-foot width, resulting in a bit more waste and you probably can't get the center panels plus one side out of 6-foot either. The Prostar is longer, but not quite as wide as the Tristar.

I would remove one side (it should be seamed down the keel line from the front panel forward) intact to verify width and length needed, then add the amount required for the center panels, driver's kick panel, and motor box piece (cut from between the two halves, prior to splitting)

I only rough cut the carpet to the removed template. I made all final cuts as I installed and glued down in the boat.

I agree that the black will be too hot, but there are quite a few shades of gray to pick from.

https://www.boatcarpetcentral.com This is where I got my carpet and glue $190 for the carpet and $71 for the glue I ordered the 20 oz 8 1/2 wide by 20 feet long I would have ordered the 24 oz but I thought it might be too thick to get under the molded pieces that I could not remove..You can order free samples and when they send them they do send a 5 or 10% discount to place your order. I ordered the midnight color and am very happy with it so far but I really haven't had the boat out since doing the carpet.. Keep us updated on your progress. Ohh I ordered it on Dec 31st and got the carpet delivered on Jan 7th not too bad turn around plus free shipping.
