I'm configuring a new X-Star and I love the darker colors. Specifically, I'm looking at a slate gray and sunrise yellow exterior. My dealer is warning me against the gray because he says it will fade more quickly than the lighter colors and therefore hurt its resale. I agree that dark colors appear to fade faster, but in my opinion gray will always be gray.

Has anyone had any fading issues with darker colors like black or gray that they haven't had on lighter-colored boats?

Keep it waxed! I have yellow and grey and the grey does go first but as long as we keep up with waxing, no issues. Also the darker colors hide the initial grime a lot better from a day out on the water.

Like everything else on our planet..... if you take care of it, it will last.

I have red and it looks like day-one. However it is stored inside and is waxed constantly.

If you are keeping it inside then get the color. If you are keeping it outside then I would get solid white. My boat is all med blue (including the top deck) and since i store it on a lift all year I'm constantly having to polish it. Withe white there is almost no maintenance.

If it is stored outside, a cover with side skirts would keep the gel from fading as quick. I brought my boat back from severe oxidation and bought a full length cover from skiboatcovers.com. I have yet to polish my boat in the last three years since i have restored the gel. Like mentioned above, keeping wax on it is key.

Red is more suceptable to fading. Pigment in red/maroon is just that way.

My guide pole covers are red as well. Totally toast from fading after 2.5 seasons and that is with boat/trailer that sits in a garage the majority of time. I like red so I had to replace with red again. That's nylon of course.
