I've already hitched up the camper so I can double hitch the boat and head for Tyler  and let the looters have it!
Pour me a Rita Eastie, I'll camp in your driveway. (read, cousin eddie)

The trick is to hold on!
You know? Like the rodeo position
just lean down and whisper in rita's ear, "your sister likes this too" Then try to hold on for 8 seconds!

Drink one for us, Tom. I've done my hurricane in Houston. One was plenty (and it was only a Cat. 3). Oh, and it was supposed to hit further west along the coast, too. At least in Houston (and especially Cypress) you don't have to worry about a surge. Just watch out for flying trees and lawn furniture.

Be safe.

The houses are totalled, and everything else is pretty much wiped out, the continued flooding is only going to slow the rebuilding not much more damage to cause in my opinion.

In the interest in protecting the leaded glass in their door from Rita, my neighbors came up with an interesting solution. Granted, the wind forecast for my area is down from 120 two days ago, to 75 or so, I don't think it will hold with only that heavy rope and industrial strength tape. Sizzler, I got to hand it to your countrymen for ingenuity. :)

My mom, my sister, and my niece all arrived (in two cars) at 1 am last night having left Thursday morning at 7 am. Took I-45 and it took them 11 hours to make the ordinarily 1 hour trip to Lake Conroe from the Memorial area. Neither ran the a/c and both turned their cars off when the traffic wasn't moving. They found gas in Palestine, Texas on the way here after getting off I45. I was very relieved as I know some were stranded.

I called them right before they left and told them to take it because they'd announced they were opening both sides. When they finally got to the part where it went "contra-flow" it moved fast. Just took forever to get there. The alternative was US 59. They'd still be on the road had they gone that way.

Not yet. We're expecting some stiff breezes with gust upwards of 35 mph tomorrow. Sunday is supposedly going to be worse. I saw one model that had it as a category 1 hurricane hitting Tyler and pulled all my "lawn missles" into the garage. Tropical storm sounds much nicer IMO.

Just read a forecast of a possible 25" of rain in some areas around here if this thing stalls over east tx as some expect it to do. Now the lake is low, don't get me wrong, but I don't think I want it all at once.

When I was pulling things in yesterday, I came across 6 bags of mulch on my back porch. My house is on a pretty tall lot. Drainage in the back can get slightly backed up though. So I lined up those bags of mulch in front of our two back doors. Hey, why not. It'll give me time to crank up the shop vac and run the water to the front and dump it down the hill. :)

Brad, we're getting some pretty strong gusts here right now. We're told to expect gusts of over 50 mph by today. But the worst thing we've been told to expect here is flooding when it stalls. My father in law pulled his boat off the lift at Caddo yesterday afternoon. At least Caddo will get some water depth if this thing stalled.

Be safe!

Gas prices weren't completely nuts yesterday (about $2.79 up from $2.44 on Wednesday evening). I'm not going out today. We still have power (obviously). Looks as if the storm is heading through Shreveport, LA and into Arkansas. Hang tough Brad and Farmer!

Thanks, Dan. Many of us here in northeast Texas (at least west of Nacogdoches) have been spared the worst of the tropical storm end of things. In Tyler, we got some much needed rain and a few downed limbs. Apart from that, it's been nothing here. Since it did not stall, rainfall has been steady, but won't last. We haven't lost power or satellite for a second. Little plug for dish network. Next time you see those cable ads that say dish will go out if the wind blows, know it's a crock. We didn't lose reception for a second. Crystal clear.

Because that is when I think it'd truly get weird.
I saw people on the roads pumping gas into milk cartons, water bottles, whatever they could find to hike it back to their dead cars. cops overwhelmed with the masses were farrrr sweeter than I've ever seen East Texas Sherrifs and Texas DPS troopers be.

Ric, my mom and sister made it home last night. They said that when traffic came to a 5 mph crawl in Huntsville on I45, that people's patience seemed to wear off. Some people were hopping on the median and gunning it. Cops showed up out of nowhere and put a stop to it.

At Willis, they jumped over to Hwy 149, which became 249, which eventually became Antoine. Took it all the way to West Houston. That's their new evac. route. Glad you made it. Enjoyed talking to you.

just got back from 2 trips to Ft. Smith today. (dog grooming day)

the Arkansas/Oklahoma State fair is going on in Ft. Smith this week.

The dairy I worked at for 13 years is also in Ft. Smith

Pretty country indeed. I still like the small feel of Ft Smith with most larger town amenities
I think there is another tmc member on here in van buren?

probably still quite a few true mountain men south of that area  (cue banjos)

yes, RyanBush is from Van Buren

I'm very pleased with our little piece of the woods here.

My family and I were on vacation last week, so all we heard were reports about the hurricane. All of you folks in Rita's path were on our minds and in our prayers all week. Glad to hear that all of you seem to be safe.
