View Full Version : The 205v (and original X-star, X-2, X-1) derivatives THREAD

The SS, Prostar, new X-2, etc. etc. owners have their threads. How about a thread for the 205v configuration, along with it's derivatives -- 205 VRS, the original X-Star, the original X-2, and the now-discontinued X-1.

One of the most popular and longest-lived configurations conceived by MasterCraft, the second generation 205 hull was introduced in 1996, with the V-drive appearing in 1999 and lasting until 2011. The history of this hull is well-documented at http://press.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=15198&highlight=1996-2000+prostar and other TT threads have commented on its demise.

So, in honor of this great boat, let's see your rides, your mods, you and the family in/on/behind it, whatever.

To begin ...

Here's our '05 X-2 which we purchased locally last fall. It has 460 hrs and the MCX engine. Options include heater, shower, tower speakers and lights, bimini. Mods include PPass and an Acme 1285 prop.

Spring plans include adding a Bennett wakeplate which I purchased last fall, adding ski rack extensions, and removing the frozen tower knobs so that I can collapse the tower. Eventually I would like to replace the rear ballast hard tanks with larger bags and also install a bow V-bag.

My '99 205v. The off-season projects: convert the 1 piece sun deck to 3 piece (underway, deck is at Viper being re-upholstered), upgrade tower speakers to a set of Kicker KM6500.2s (waiting on the 2nd pair of speaker cans to come in), bought a tower mounted rearview mirror to replace the windshield mounted one, and I'm ordering a bimini soon: http://www.bigairwaketowers.com/bimini/bigairbimini/

I've been thinking about doing the same on mine (post #1 above.) Was there any fading on the gelcoat when you pulled off the big oval? I wonder how the black/red would look on my red hull? Post a pic of yours when you're done.

There wasn't much fading on the sides at all. You could tell where the decals had been if you looked closely, but a buff and polish took care of it.

I had some oxidation on the transom, and you could really see where the stickers were. After wet sanding, buffing, and polishing you can't see anything on the transom. Here are a couple of before an after pics of the transom. I will post pics as soon as I get the decals installed. It's supposed to rain here tomorrow, so Friday will be my next chance to get them on.

2003 x2, New to me mid-summer last year. My first Mastercraft (and first inboard).
Spent what was left of summer playing with weight and bags for surfing. Wakeboard wake didnt seem to need any work with the stock ballast full.
Have a heater project lined up, working on the teak right now.

It's a work in progress but all the stock balast full-540lb in the surf side locker (port for us)another 540bag on the port seat. 300lbs on the floor in the in the bow walkway.....we had a couple of 200lb plus guys that could surf that with a fast board-wave gets weird if people are moving around and it's not that long.
I've seen some guys on here saythey put way more weight up front so I will try that this summer to see if we can stretch it out a bit.
Hate having bags laying all over the place so may add removing the hard tanks to my list of projects and bury a bag under the bow seats

Take boards out of racks to reduce drag. Have observer sit in port bow. I run 32 MPH, faster is better. Wakeplate would help, but I don't have the room in my garage :(

That pic is probably 30-31 MPH with a few people in the boat...

It's a Krypt Double Surf. Got it from Ian at Onlyinboards. Tell him Bryan from NW Boat Sports told you that he would hook you up. Looks like he has 2 options now. Verify which is best for your application and what size mount for tubing. IIRC I mounted mine to cross member which is less in diameter than tower tubing....

I'm typically the "bone stock" sort of guy, unless it's a small subtle change, or if there is something horrendously wrong with the original. In your case, the split color on the hull might be problematic in terms of replacing the decal with lettering. Logic says you would have to go above or below the split -- in the white area it might look too high and in the blue it would be too low. Straddling the split with the lettering doesn't seem like an option. Dunno?

That has been and is my thought as well. It's actually a cool decal with Lots of detail when you see it up close. That said, I am still partial to plain white boats and aircraft....just something about it that works better for me than the loud designs of today's x-stars.....

An all white one with that curved glass would be sex on water.

That's me in the above ad. I just posted the x-10 thread and put my boat up for sale to see what kind of interest I get for my 2005. I'm not 100% on selling it. It's funny i've been asked for interior pictures of the boat and really i have nothing. Pictures of us inside, tons of us wakeboarding and surfing. But until you go to sell your boat you really don't ever bother taking pictures of the interior.

Good looking boat, let us know how the sale goes.
What setup did you find worked best for surfing?

Bambamski1
02-13-2013, 02:58 PM
These are the set ups that work for me. We never really used a ton of weight, i've found with the 205 if you have proper edging technique you don't need to put 3k of extra weight.

Surfing
Port side.
All the stock ballast filled, we have a 500 lb fat sac in the bow and a 350 lb sac in the port side back compartment. About 9 mph. We typically have 3-5 people in the boat so one or two in the bow and we'll put the rest on the port side or the back seat. That will produce a great wake, super hard which is the key to this boat. You don't get soft and mushy with the 205 hull. Really on the port side you don't have to do as much and it's rideable.

Starboard side
kind of need the planets to align it seems. One day we'll run the exact set up and it won't be as good. But this is what we found works the best. Stock ballast filled, except for the port side. keep the 500 lb sac in the bow filled. put the extra 350 in the starboard side compartment and put a couple of people in the bow and the rest on or close to the Starboard back end of the boat. now for the weird part. We have a person old onto the tower just behind the driver and hang off the side of the boat. Kind of do the sailboat lean thing. This seems to tip the boat on edge and it cleans up the wake so the rooster isn't throwing water in your face. Oh and you have to do a turn to the right. Just depends on how washed out the wave is. The tighter the turn the cleaner it gets.

Wakeboard
Like i said we don't run a ton of weight. We always have a 500 up front. This boat really needs weight in the bow to firm up the wake which will also help clean it up. Stock ballast and 5 people in the boat is all you need sometimes. If we want the wake to be stupid we add 350's to each compartment but that just ends up hurting knees. When we get new folks to ride behind the boat when it's set up like that, they usually ask if we can empty the stock ballast out. With any weight, you really need to run at least 22mph. no weight which isn't terrible you can get away with running 19-20.

This is why i really like this boat. all you need to do is fill the front sac and fill the stock ballast and you're ready to go.

Thanks. I added the retractable tie downs last year. Initially there wasn't enough room to get the hooks through between the platform and transom. I would just remove the platform pins and slide the platform up about an inch and there would be enough room for the tie downs to clear. Later in the summer the screws holding the platform to the bracket ripped out while taking big rollers watching a wakeboard tournament. When I repaired the platform by filling the holes with marine epoxy, I drilled the holes about 1/4" further in. That gave me enough room for the hooks to make it through.

When I repaired the platform by filling the holes with marine epoxy, I drilled the holes about 1/4" further in. That gave me enough room for the hooks to make it through.

Thanks, I have my platform brackets off now to re-finish the teak and am deciding whether I will use a soft strap like I use on my dirtbikes to drop through the platform or move the bracket holes a touch-I like the idea of a little more clearance betweeen the boat and the platform I think...

Another option I was considering before the screws ripped out of the platform was to just sand down a little of the platform to give the tie down hook room to clear. The hooks were very close to making it through. There was enough room up top, but not on the bottom. I think the problem was the way the transom slopes and the back of the platform is vertical. If you just sanded a little off the bottom of the back of the platform, the hooks would clear. The would be almost completely unnoticeable.

My X2 has the fiberglass platform. I have retractable tiedowns and they go between the hull and platform no problem. Obviously clearance for a teak platform is different.

Amazing looking boat! I'm shocked that mc has discountinued the 205v, x1. I honestly think that weighted correctly it can be a great surf boat as well as eveything else. I surfed almost every x series model last year excluding the star and the x1 made the nicest wave. having said that, the x1 owner i was with was a wizard with ballast. he choose the x1 because he feels the pickle forks are tougher to sink for surfing? Regardless, i love your boat!

I have been thinking I would like to add a shower to my '03 X2. The heatercraft price was pretty stiff but I saw this on ebay. Price looks good and if its the factory kit should be all I need.
I tried to look up the MC part number they list but could not get a hit.
From the heatercraft site, this one appears to be just one of the flush mount kits they have.
I think I want to put it at the transom in the stock position but would like to see a few pictures. I think my blower vents are under the cover that is there now and when you have the factory shower, you put the controls where the cover is (was)
Anyone with the factory shower option have any advice? Where is the switch located for the pump?

Some great looking 205v!!! I am taking my '04 X2 in to an upholstery shop on Thursday to have new bimini Sunbrella (sp?) fabric put on my frame. How tight should the fabric be when the bimini is set up???

When we got our boat, it came with the bimini frame but the fabric was gone and had a padded shipping blanket zip-tied in place (so no clue how tight itís supposed to be). This is frame has the 3 point mounting to the inner edge of the windshield.

we couldn't find the right color of purple to match and didn't want to go with black ... we opted for red material ... think that would look okay???

It is kind of difficult to tell, but is your boat not blue? If it is, then go with blue or you could go with a grey. I would think that red would stick out too much bc there doesn't seem to be that much red on the boat, other than the graphics. Does the interior have red in it?

boogie420
04-02-2013, 05:04 PM
Mines the same purple but gunmetal in the middle.it was a little faded when bought so thought was blue, but title says purple. Plus it buffed back to purple. Not sure how well purple and red would blend, but beauty is all in the eye of the beholder.black would prob be safer choice.

yep, definately purple, really deep rich purple ... white bottom, purple with red X middle, light gray with white on top cap. Interior is mostly white/offwhite, with gray & purple accents ... with a red steering wheel :D ... Wife said no to black (too hot) and the purple colors clashed with the dark of the boat and lighter of interior ... plus my wife loves red ...

well ... the wife dropped the boat off at the upholstery shop last Thursday morning ... and to my surprise, it was sitting in the driveway when I got home with the new bimini installed. It was not set up, so I didn't get any pictures but the wife was very pleased with the appearance. I will try to get home early enough sometime this week to pull it out of the garage, set up the tower & bimini to see how it looks myself (and take a picture)... Wife's happy with the red, so I'm sure I will be too.
The upholstery guy looked at our rear deck pad and said he would match it from the color portion back where the seams have started opening up ... for $65. After I get a close look at the bmini to see how his craftmanship is, we will likely pull the center rear deck and take to him to have it reworked.

Hi all,

Listing my 2005 Mastercraft X2 for sale. Excellent Condition. MCX engine. Cruise control. 210 hours. Optima marine battery. Hard ballast tanks in the back, soft bag in the center locker. Updated Clarion head unit with newer style control for driver. Two amps driving 4 speakers in boat plus sub and 4 tower speakers. All ballast pump impellers replaced less than 2 years ago. New OEM fuel module from MC dealer installed August 2012 (the whole module, not rigged together with some automobile fuel pump). Full custom cover from skiboatcovers.com, black, Sunbrella material, waterline legth to protect platform, graphics and paint, 2 years old, paid $1000. Blue and white bimini top. Professionally waxed twice a year. Teak platfrom cleaned and oiled every other year, in process right now. All regular services preformed as recommended. All original. Upholstery and carpet in excellent condition. I take very good care of my boats and it shows. It does have a few minor signs of wear but nothing substantial and if asked will be happy to describe in detail and send pics. Boat is a 9.5 out of 10 and I am picky. This boat has been adult owned and operated and never abused or run hard. I never "put the hammer down" and run full throttle across the lake.

A few things I am OCD about:

No shoes in the boat, period
Cleaned after every use with Maguires products
No colored drinks allowed
No eating allowed in the boat (welcome to sit on platform and eat)
Put you board or ski on in the water, not on the teak deck
Everything comes out of the boat at the end of the weekend
Always completely dry before covering
Never left in the water overnight
Ballast bag removed and center ski locker dryed out after each use
Only premium (93) gas

Only selling because family wants a bigger boat. Would be will to trade for late model X45 or X55.

$34,999

Located in Memphis, TN

Thanks for looking.

I have been trying to find this on the threads, but figured here is as good as anywhere to post. I'm looking at the 205v. We have had the X9 and used it for wakeboarding and waterskiing. We run the course a couple of times a year. I was wondering if anyone runs the course in the 205V. I know that some say there is a big bump. I usually run the course at 36 @ 15off. I know that this is not the best option, but I still want the ability to wakeboard and surf. Thanks in advance.

wheelerd
06-21-2013, 04:29 PM
I don't ski at 36 mph but as the speed increase the bump decreases -- never to the point of what you would get on a 197, but not unmanageable if you keep your edge. If you can run a ballast bag in the ski locker or walkway, or under the bow seats, that will help too.

Mine were yellowing.... sprayed a shot of Totally Awesome on them and the spray turned dark yellow and to my surprise when I wiped... The grill was stark white!

I then went out side and sprayed some on my wifes headlights that fogged from the sprinklers and voila! Same effect spray turned a dark yellow and the lights were sparkling again!
