For the past 5 years a group of us wakeboard and snowboard on the same day to raise money for Wake the World. This year it is on March 2nd. Last year 83 of us did it. Hopefully we will top 100 this year. Anyone else do something similar?

Tennessee will be Performance Watersports in Kingsport, TN. I believe they are going to be on Fort Patrick Henry Lake.

Why kind of water temps are we talking? Like dry suit temps? I'm thinking it might make for a cool weekend vacation if I don't have to buy a dry suit or wetsuit.. But being that early in the year it's going to be cold I'm sure!

Think a 3/2mm shorty wetsuit would be sufficient for early March riding? If so I'm in. Heck, I'm probably in either way. This may be the only opportunity I get for snowboarding this year, since I've got a 5 week old son, and my wife might divorce me if I go to CO without them!

WOW - water temps here in DFW are 50 at best March 1st of any year!

You'll be singing 'alto' when you dip em in that cold drink

I WON'T be in a shorty lol. I took a dip in first week of march in raleigh last year and it was COLD. I was riding no suit by end of march (not fun) but think the water was hovering at 59-60 on a semi heated lake with 75-80 air temp. Mountains should be substantially colder. My girl said "sure" we can go. I'm sure when its cold she'll start whimpering.

Our lake temp in raleigh is at 44.5 right now and I can't see it being higher than that then.

Well, I'm not going to dip them bare! LOL! They'll be covered by the wetsuit shorts. What thickness wetsuit would be recommended for 50 degree water temps?

Haha, touché, sir! I bought my wetsuit on eBay where they didn't have that handy temp chart.

yea 40-45 degree water might not be the greatest time for a shorty haha

A couple of these lakes are heated so we are talking low to mid sixties for water temps. The air temp is all over the place though. It has been as cold as 48 and as warm as 83. I have only worn a wetsuit twice for this event so far. Out of the 8 locations, the 2 warmest lakes are Hyco and Belews Lake.

I was wondering how a lake would be heated, so I did some google searching and found that Belews Lake is heated by Belews Creek Power Station, a coal-burning power plant. They have a 38% efficiency rating. The remaining 62% is released in the form of heat, and dumped into the lake. In fact, the lake was formed for the purpose of providing cooling water for the power station.

I'm sure this is great during the winter, but I'm wondering how warm it gets in the summer!

Yea I can't really find any info on dates/locations.

If you are planning a mini vaca hyco is pretty sweet but theres a few pita's. You have to pay for a pass which if I recall is like 30 bucks or 65 for the season. During non summer months the bridge to get to one side of the lake is super low........like super low. You will have to lower your tower every time you pass it. Not a huge deal but kind of a pain. The good news is the gas station/store/restraunt are on the side you won't have to tower down for.

Roxboro is a bed of nothing which is the cool part. There isn't crap out there to do but ride and get drunk. Houses are all along the lake and plenty of rentals. Just get something semi close to the power plant to keep warm

I probably wouldn't drag my boat there, I'd prolly just go for Saturday&sunday.. It's like a 900 one way trip so I don't want to take the boat since I'm not exactly comfortable pulling it 1800 miles at 80mph.. Although I have pulled it prolly 1000 already since I've had it at those speeds.. I can't see burning the extra fuel to tow it that far just for one day.. Which marina/ dealer is sponsoring at hyco and belews?

^for the cost of driving that far you might as well fly in. Hyco is 45min to an hour from raleigh. belews is like 30min from winston salem

I like driving.. Nothing against flyin just like driving and seeing everything along the way.. With my truck it'd only cost me about $500 in fuel.. Which is a lot but I don't think I could buy 4 plane tickets for that, and I won't have to worry about luggage

Hey Greg do you have the date for Hyco?

I live about 45min to an hour from hyco but we have a friend with a house up there. I assume everyone will be out by the hot spot lol

Should be good for that. Can't promise too too much right now. Waiting on scheduling for my interior to get done in the boat and praying everything will be done by then. You ski or wakeboard?

clrussell
01-09-2013, 03:06 PM
Wakeboard, I can't ski good enough to call it worth someone's while.. We can work it out later.. I'll just plan on being there For all weekend and if I can't get a pull its cool, I'll find something to do round there

I've got a few sets of skis.. But I rarely use them because I enjoy wakeboarding more.. Someday I will learn to slalom ski again

Man, that looks pretty fun. Wish I could go but have my daughter's 1yr bday party. Too big to miss that one. To all who are going, have fun!
