Has anyone ever blown a motor and had it replaced in their boat? My 454 blew and i'm looking for cheaper way of replacing it and so far have not found one. Indamar wants close to seven grand and I know there has to be a cheaper way! Has anyone put a different brand motor in their mastercraft? Thanks in advance for your help!

You could probably pick up a 454 crate engine to swap and should be quite a bit cheaper.

www.propowermarine.com sells remanufactured long blocks that are good transplants.

skidim has the MPI GT-40 for $6K or so. Maybe you're looking to save a few bucks more, but I don't think I've ever heard much bad about that engine on a ski boat.

I ran across one guy that replaced his Indmar with a PCM from skidim. It was the carbed version which is not listed in the catalog now.

I have a friend who has the GT-40 in his #@&*%. It is over 10 years old now and still runs great.

Regardless, you would probobly miss the power of the 454.

Several of the remanufacturing companies offer Marine long blocks. Jasper Engine sales is one that I know of. Check this link

Try Jasper: http://www.jasperengines.com/

I just checked their site and they have a remanufactured 351 for around $2300 and a 454 for $2600. Price assumes they'll be picking up your old motor in trade.

I bought a pair of short block Mercruisers (350 cu. in.) from them a few years back for my Formula. They cost me around $2500 each. Remans, but seemed good as new to me... Can't beat the price. Jasper has a pretty good reputation.

Maybe, but he won't miss the fuel consumption

X2 on the Jasper, for the price of a motor you could almost find another boat

Guess there are a lot of options depending on how much time you have. Buy an old engine and swap over the marine parts, buy a junk boat with engine still good, etc. Ebay? http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=454+engine&category0=

What is blown, cracked block, heads, cylinders?

If it is out of a Nautique, it probobaly rotates the wrong way. Looks a little rough also, maybe the price will be right.

The motor had 83K miles on it. Only real challenge, beyond carefully swapping all marine parts over, was drilling out temp sensor plug in one head. Car motor has one, marine motor has one in each head.

I'm not sure which vehicle your 454 would come in, but find out and then contact a high quality salvage outfit.

Keep the 454! It just sounds cool! Check with your local SPEEDSHOP and see what they can do for you. Sounds like they could make what you have into a real screamer! Have some fun with it but emphasize reliability! :D Has anyone ever blown a motor and had it replaced in their boat? The only changes were a new timing gear and chain set and all external gaskets.

I have to stay with the 454! If anyone knows anything about my hull with the motor, With the added weight of the 454 it really gets on the nose and turns for boat-o's. The extra weight make the boat so much better. I also need the extra power for the rest of the show! ( Show Skiing) So down gradeing engine's is not an option. The two site's on motors looks the the way I will go. Thats more in the price range of a 16 year old boat. Thank you everyone!

There's no replacement for cubic displacement. Retrofit a bigger fuel tank and punch it!
