My 1/4 inch Brass Petcock on the block of my 91 indmar is rusted in real good. I have soaked it in release all and now reduced to using vicegrips. I would like to get it out and replace with just a plug. Any tips or ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks

If the hex hasn't been completely rounded over, take off the wings and use a socket. Don't pound on it. Try PB Blaster- I haven't found anything that works better.

Jim:

A guy told me to give Seafoam Deep Creep a try the other day on some rusted starter motor bolts/mounts and I was impressed. If you have not tried it, check it out.

Thanks Guys... good ideas! Today is a new day. I just about lost my mind yesterday, the drain is in a very awkward spot!
Cheers

Well no luck today. Too rounded off for socket. Looks like I will add some deep creep and PB blaster to my arsenal tomorrow. Looks like some handy stuff to have around anyways!

Go to an auto parts store and see if they have a bolt extractor to loan. If not, you may want to buy one- they're not terribly expensive, especially at Harbor Freight and places like that.

Crap - sorry to read about the hassle...maybe a little heat on the petcock bolt or what's left of it...too bad it was so tight. can you file/(dremel tool) some sides to it so you can grab it again? How much space do you have to work.

If you have the space and enough material on the stuck petcock, use a dremel to cut a slot through the middle of it and use a large flat bade screwdriver on it.

Can you get a pair of vice grips on it?

Get it out and replace with a 1/4 npt brass plug. Much easier to deal with.

I destroyed the petcock on mine getting it out, but it went straight to trash can last year.

Its on the lower left side which makes it a difficult spot. Vice Grips are just peeling the brass unfortunatley. The Dremal tool may be a good option thanks. I also heard from a guy today that maybe some heat then spray water on it to quickly cool it off. The block and brass should cool at a different rate and break the threads?? Def. going to replace with a plug lubed in teflon!!

if its that bad, he may have to re-thread it once its out - i had to on my boat this year

First off take a pic and post it up.

Second off if you break off the wings and pull out the valve then there is a hole down the middle of the drain valve.

Take an easy out reverse threaded tool and screw it into the brass fitting. Then you can have something to grip with a socket. Heat may be needed to get the plug out.

I did river rats boat and removed his plug. After removal I cleaned the threads with a tap. I did both block drains and the risers with the taps.

It should be NPT thread for the tap, not regular bolt threads.

Good deal. Put some teflon tape on your new plugs.

And never use a plug made from the same metal as what it goes into.
