boat was over heating so i took the thermostat out. no water is getting to the housing. so i check the raw pump its fine. and the pipes are clear through from the strainer to the pump (no clogs).

Any idea?84848

What does your impeller look like? That's what pulls the water into the engine.

How old is the raw water pump impeller? If you don't remember when it was installed, change it. You checked/cleaned the oil cooler, right?

are you getting a good seal at the strainer? None problem if seal is not good...

Check valve on the hull fitting open? I managed to bump mine partially closed while cleaning the bilge one year. Drove me crazy trying to figure out why the boat was running warm until I stumbled across it while tracing the flow back to the source.

Look in the thermostat housing cover- the hole forward of the thermostat location may have a chunk of impeller stuck in it. I have seen this on several engines that were overheating.

Looking at your picture, I would replace those rusted thermostat bolts.

New SS at Lowes or whatever.

Shearing one of those can make for a bad day.

Raw water pump has a specific direction that it has to be replaced after removal.

I did. i saw the veins but didnt see how extensive the damage was. Best advice. try and blow through the pump. if air passes through impeller is done. Just ordered 2.

The only thing I can think of is there was an interruption of water and the impeller over heated. OP mentions strainer - notorious for air inline if not sealed properly..... no water - heat...bye bye impeller..so sad...

You will need to find all the pieces that came off of that impeller as well as any pieces that came off of any prior impellers.... Check all hoses and coolers down line from the pump....You may also find pieces of impeller in the intake hose prior to the pump... Backflush all the hoses and try to account for all missing vanes.... And by the way, where are you in the northeast....I'm in MA.

even new impellers can go bad. one common problem is the brass inner separating from the rubber, the impeller looks fine, but only the inner center is spinning....it baffled me for a couple hours on the lake one day.

if water pick up screen is clean, tranny cooler is clean, hoses on correctly......change the $40 impeller. :-)

Just picked up my used boat last month and I think I am having this issue. No water feeding into the basket thus none to cool the engine. Got the new impeller and headed tomorrow.

Inspect trans cooler.. flush the trans cooler to make sure it's clear.... that will eliminate one source of problem.

Learned that lesson as well, I've had 2 that did this, one with very low hours.
