View Full Version : need to replace steering in 86 MC

It is time to replace the steering in my mc. I was driving Dad through the course and it was fine. Changed skiers and it was extremely hard to turn. It has been greased every year at winterization. No water in the hull which would have gotten in the cable. Disconnected the cable from the rudder and it is still very stiff.
I have been told that the rack and pinion is the way to go.
Has anyone done the conversion? Was it fairly straight forward? What size cable did you get?

I replaced the steering system in my '77 a couple years ago with rotary system from SKIDIM and couldn't be happier with the results. The job was very straightforward and simple and the directions were reasonably well written and thorough.
Two things to make your job easier:
1. The steering cable length is stamped into the rudder end of the cable. Know this before ordering as I think MC sometimes just used what was available at the time of construction.
2. With the rotary system, the cable can be loaded in two different ways, so it it entirely possible to assemble everything, then take the boat out and find out the steering is backwards.
I had a thread on my project.http://mastercraft.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=36737

Thanks mrmastercraft. Talked to Vince at skidim and ordered the uflex kit.
Installation would have been straight forward if not for the brace under the dash that was glassed in at an angle. Had to do some cutting and grinding to get the rotary unit to fit. The steering is nice and smooth again.

Good to hear it worked out.

I have a 1984 S & S. I don't know what year model you have. This link http://www.boatdesigns.com/default.asp has the cables. No need to change the steering out if your boat has the same cable as a 1984-86.

If a person wants to change just the cable, SKIDIM also has what is needed.

Vince told me cables for steermaster were no longer available. After looking some on the net it appears they are still available.
Maybe I should start researching things better. Skidim also told me my old screws that hold the bowls on the carb needed to be replaced when I rebuilt my carb. (wouldnt work with the rebuild kit) A 20.00 sale for them. I rebuilt my carb and used the old screws. 44 hours since rebuild and no problems. I have always heard good things about skidim, but kinda feeling taken now.
