The Muffler On My 1991 Prostar...are There 2 More Under The Floor? One On Each Side Or Is This The Only Muffler? Thanks!

Should be 2 one on each side.

I only have the silent master behind the engine. The exhaust hose goes from the silent master to the transom. I don't have the 2 under the floor.
PS: same 1991 PS 190

My 1990 ProStar has only the SilentMaster. There are no other inline mufflers.

By the way, I looked into buying a new SilentMaster several years ago and they are no longer available.

I Was Thinking About Taking Mine Off...but I Thought There Were Mufflers Under The Floor Too. But If Its Not, Then That Answers That!

On the 91, there is only the big pain in the a** muffler, I took it off and installed two "performance" ultra mufflers under the floor. Much more room, sounds better and not much louder, just a better tone.

Sorry for my uneducated answer a friend bought a 91 this year and it has two mufflers just like my '87.

in 90 and 91 I know for a fact came standard with the large single dual in dual out muffler. In 92 they went back to dual mufflers. Lynrd, someone changed out the large single muffler on his 91. I bet it leaked, it was a common issues with those.

Anyone have a sound clip of theirs with the silent master gone and the 2 performance mufflers? I want mine to be a little louder but like stupid where I get annoyed riding behind it. Mine has the silent master now

click videos and one is the 2011 season start up of my 93S&S that has good HD video/sound of the twin performance silent master exhaust

I don't have a before, since the twin mufflers were OE, but I will replace them with straight CPVC when one of them fails. As long as there is water flowing the CPVC will hold up indefinitely.

I have a 1992 PS205 with the single large SilentMaster so they must have continued them past 1991. Maybe 1992 was the last year. I like how quiet it is.

Neighbor (across the lake) has a 80s S&S and he is running straight pipes and the difference is noticeable but mostly from behind the boat and in the upper revs. No big diff at idle that I can tell. Sounds really good from shore when underway since the thru hull pipes still sit below the waterline muffling lower speed sound quite a bit.

My 1991 PS190, all stock and OEM and so on, has dual Silent Masters under floorboard.

Has factory EI as well. Must have been late 1991.

There were so many engine configurations in the 90s that, it would make sense that it would have been an option that lingered for the more distinguished crowd.

In the 90s there were MANY engines offered as optional and std across the model lineups; if memory is correct:
220HP 305, 240HP 351, 260HP 351, 275HP TBI 350, 285HP GT40, 310HP TBI GT40, 310 HP TBI 350, 330HP 454, & 350HP LT-1 probably others too, I am just going off what I have seen on the history threads on TT. The most common by far, that I have seen from the 90's seems to be the 285HP GT40 motor with a 1:1 and dual silent masters (just my perception).

I could see the lower half of these engines getting a crossflow pack. Curious if anyone has a older boat with a 454 and xflow? That would be kind of oxymoronesque.

(sorry for the thread jack)

Not to sound uneducated, but how do you tell what 351W you have, externally?

Standard 240HP vs HO?

I have all the records of my PS (I am 2nd owner), but even the original receipt from MC dealer does not specify engine. Don't have the equivalent "window sticker" to the boat.

Just curious. Thanks.

There are 3 hash marks on the GT40 heads, which was the main difference for the HO motor. I think the diff b/n the 240 and 260 was a different cam, but I am not 100% on that. To avoid threadjacking I will post the link to the thread that discusses this as soon as I find it, so we are not being too redundant.

GT40 HO motor was optioned in 92. In 91, only 351W was the 240hp

EI was factory in 91. Im not sure why you have dual silent masters. Every 91 I have seen had the large junk muffler. Hmm... Interesting. Have to try to do some digging on that.

Now that I think of it I believe the 260 HP 351 was PCM and only in the 80s? I know I have seen it on the internet somewhere, so it must be true! Just kidding. An acquaintance has a 83 and I am sure he said 260...off topic.

Can't find the how do I tell if I have a GT40 or not thread, but it had good pictures of the 3 casting hash marks. I will keep looking and post if I come up with it.

Hell, I can't find them on here EastTX refs it in another thread, but that is all I have come up with...

Anyhow, look on the ends of the heads if there are 3 raised lines they are GT-40s if it has 4 raised lines they are GT-40P heads (not stock).

Here is a picture of the heads (not on engine) but at least you can see the three bars.

I'll have to do some digging but there is a company that does have the one piece SM look alike. I was doing some research a while back and found them.

TLR67, How would you describe the difference?

How would you describe the difference?

BADA$$

Mine are straight in my '93 190.

Pipes are under water when the boat is just sitting but when it is up and running it sounds great........It makes it sound like it should sound.......like it has a pair of BOUYS

It is not that loud and it sure does not sound like some cigarette boat or like you are trying to be a cigarette boat.

I ran irrigation pipe PVC pipe in mine. I set my mufflers next to the PVC and made the same bend and legnths, use the 2 part glue, assembled the setup, and called it good. Since water and exhaust are mixed the pipes do not get hot enough to melt, change shape, or cause any problems to the PVC. I have run mine straight for a few years now.

NOTE that if you use metal pipes the sound will more than likely be louder and metal does conduct heat....
