Hey guys. Went out for a late run tonight. My engine is smoking out of the left side only. Any ideas of where to start. Smoke was was more white than blue. Thanks.

Smoke or steam? Either way do a compression test it could be a head gasket leaking water into the combustion chamber and being burned out.

I think it was like steam than smoke.

Do the compression test if all good and if its only on one side it could be a leaking exhaust manifold, also check impeller and thermostat if its running a little warmer than normal it could just having hot water from engine exhaust hitting cooler lake water causing the steam, did it dissipate quickly or linger around? Did it have an odor? if all checks good, then thats all it is just steam and its normal, all depends on relative humidity, ambient temp, lake temp, exhaust temp, dew point etc.

A cooling issue of some sort. When was the last time you changed your riser to muffler exhaust hoses?

I have not. Only had it for a short while. They look ok and seem stuff. What would I be looking for. There is a strange noise that I hear on that same side that comes from where the upper exhaust manifold meets the lower manifold. Could it be something in there. Thanks

sounds like time to take a look. at least pulling a riser, hose, and monifold, is not too difficult... get the pb blaster and hit the bolts the day before...

What would I be looking for. Gaskets. Blocked passages. Cracks??

I would say - yes to all... might be a blocked hose... click on cloak's picture link

Don't se a picture link.Step 1) Look in my signature line of any of my posts (below)
Step 2) see the last text line above the picture of Harold pissing on Jim
Step 3) click said link

I am showing you the possibility of a cause of insufficient waterflow and an internal issue of an exhaust hose.

Hi all,
I was at the lake this weekend on my 2003 x9 with 4 adults and 6 kids on board. After running for awhile we stopped and on restart noticed (I think was steam) white smoke. It lasted only for short while and quit when we picked up speed. Did not smell and dissipated quickly. No miss and boat ran fine. May have had a little loss of power but not sure if this was because I had a full boat. Oil looks good. Thought on what could be wrong?

You have a cooling issue. Change the raw water impeller, check for blockage in cooling hoses at transmission cooler, etc.

........ on restart noticed (I think was steam) white smoke. It lasted only for short while and quit when we picked up speed. I'd say that is a normal characteristic. Don't worry about it. I notice the same thing from my exhausts from time to time, boat to boat.

Just keep an eye on the temp gauge for the sake of attention.

Thanks for your help. Will check impeller.
