So my 1997 190 is in need of an ECM, @ $1600 I am seriously contemplating trading up to an 2009 190 with the 6.0.

The boat has 605 hours with the 6.0L engine. It's pretty loaded up and in great condition. It is possible I could be getting it for around $30K. I am happy to be upgrading to a newer engine and boat. However, I am hoping that with all the folks on here I can get some input on the engine and boat in general.

Thanks in advance. Here are some pics.

Does the ECM respond to when plugged into an ECM Computer (Master, programmer or whatever they are called?) Nice boat...

I can't say much about a 2009 since I got a 1996, but I CAN say she sure is purdy...

LF that's an awesome 190 I saw it in person earlier this year when my son attended Bennett's it's a real head turner! Can't comment on ski ability or anything as my son was wakeboarding for the week. I will say that it looked and sounded awesome.

I've spent time around that boat since it was new. Always been at Bennett's and is a well maintained and beautiful boat. That boat was set up as their jump boat hence the 6.0.

Beautiful boat... was it used for the ski school? The ECM alone is $1600?? That's seems high just for an ECM..

Bennett's told me the ECM is not made by Indmar anymore. So it is not available. Finding one is especially challenging.

Hot looking 190. But unless you really have the itch for something new I would spend the $1600 to fix your '97 and go ski. Is the pull behind that 2009 $28k better?

sounds like a case of lust and lost confidence. I agree with Brian spend the $1,600 and go ski if it still will make you happy BUT "if the thrill is gone and that is the real reason for the lust after the 2009 then you will never be happy with the fix you will always be looking for another reason to get the 2009 so it sounds like it is time to evaluate what you really want.

I don't anticipate that the pull will be revolutionary or anything, but the constant maintenance issues are enough to make me consider consider this seriously...My 97 has 1550 hours on it and the previous owners were not good about maintenance, it has been a constant battle to keep her going every summer and this one was the worst...

Also, since there will be a problem locating an ECM I want to enjoy the rest of the summer...should not have to worry about repowering in a couple years either...

Yipes, not good news at all.

New MEFI III ( I believe) ECMs haven't been available for years.
I had to buy a re-furb one, $1000, for my 96 about 8 years ago. Did the dlr send the ECM off to Indmar?
My dealer at the time could not diagnose whether the ECM was repairable or not, just that it wasn't working properly.
Bottom line, the boat's not going to the junkyard because of a bad ECM and I bet it's worth $2k+ more running than not running.
Boils down to do you want to mess with it or not.
Buy the 09 and then find an ECM somewhere so you can get a decent buck out of your old boat.

I know there is with vehicles, but are there any laws saying you can't switch from EFI to carb on a boat? No idea what cost would be, but it should be less than the cost of the 09.

The boat was used mainly for staff and Pro jump competition LA Night Jam 2&3.

On occasion, it was used for ski school.

Bottom line, it is a great looking boat.
