Drained all oil in engine and pan. Placed new filter and filled it with 1/2 qt. then filed engine with 3 qts of 20w50 vr1. The dipstick says full. Can't be ! Once I crank it will it require more fluid.

Before when I had changed the oil and put in 4 quarts it ready about 1 qt too high. Any ideas
Thanks

Mike.

Oil lever will read different on the trailer. Correct place to determine oil level is in the water. Depending on how you drained your oil, and how efficient your method was at removing all the oil, you may only get 4 and part of a 5th quart in. Mt '77 reads a little high on the trailer.

4 qts + a bit for the filter is right. You may very well may not have gotten it all out.

Yeah. I think I got it all. I had the oil pan off to replace the oil pump. Let it drain for a day.

I would put 4 qts is fire it up for a minute or so, turn off the engine then recheck level and adjust if necessary then when you get the boat in the water check oil level again by starting for a minute and adjust as necessary...

Now that it some funny sh1t. I haven't gotten a reading on my '87 351 that's made any sense in 13 years -- there are some threads on here with similar observations. I think the dipsticks are AFU.

yep my 84 ss 351 pcm owners manual reads 4 qts for pan and 1 qt for filter so i warmed up in driveway, drained for a couple hrs then changed filter and refilled then put in lake and idled for a few min shut off and dipstick shows high of full mark so do i believe the owners manual or the dipstick???now i also seen in the owners manual something about the correct dipstick for the degree the motor sits at. my boat is well documented and very well mantained so i dont feel it is the wrong dipstick.
