View Full Version : Going To Look At An '89 PS190 Junker

I'm on way too many forums already, but there's a lot of useful stuff on here... Long story short, my dad had an early 80s MC many years ago, sold that and eventually bought a new '98 Gecko after building our house. Sold that about 6-7 years ago, and now that most of the kids are driving now, me and my parents have been itching to get another boat. Been looking for '87 and newer prostars for the last couple months, and they're all asking too much or they sell before we can get out there (they're all far away too).

I don't want to make this post too long, so I just wanted to say I'm going to look at a 1989 prostar 190 this Saturday. Still waiting to get more info/pics, but here's what I have been told so far. It's the 454 bbc, has a broken water pump mount from dropping the engine cover on it. Motor turns over (start is a little noisy), and the owners friend says he saw him driving it earlier this year. Interior is completely shot, and you can see there's a hole in the right rear of the boat.

So it definitely needs some work, but it's cheap, and me and my dad are willing to do some work to get it running. We'd prefer the 351 w/powerslot, but this should do for now if there's little to nothing else wrong with it.

Where in the Northern Midwest are you? What is your budget? There are plenty of people on here who would scour the area to help find a boat.

Just north of the Twin Cities. Wanted to keep it 7k or less for one in good shape.

I'd sell my '83 stars and stripes... 351 w/ powerslot. Great condition, brand new interior this year (minus carpet). It would be more than 6 grand though... let me know if interested.

Someone would have to pay for my gas, food and lodging to haul that boat off. Too much obvious neglect, no telling what else will show up when you try to get it running. As already stated, there are a ton of nice boats around for under 7K. Just be patient.

Boat pricing does nothing but drop until spring. Seems if you don't sell your boat by the 4th of July in this part of the country, you either have to drop your price substantially or keep if over winter.

Why do you say that? I mean, if the engine runs, I figure even if we put 2g's into it, it would be a pretty good deal. Forgot to mention it has 790 hours, if that makes a difference.

Not everyone has the ability or time to work a project boat. I have been having a blast working on mine since I got it. Not sure what I would do with all my free time if I weren't out working on the boat.

Agree with Pram. NO care. Not even wiped down afterwards for many years. The upholstery doesn't look original, either, motor cover isn't. Our '89 Prostar has 733 hrs., we're the third owner. I see now how much my TLC on the seats and the waxings really keep it looking great. This made me sick. Someone asked me the other day if our seats were original as they look pretty darn good. They are but they get some care, at least! This person didn't care enough about taking care of the boat to keep it looking even half-way decent, you know they didn't do any maintenance on the engine, either. Keep looking. Too many obvious issues, how many hidden?

07-27-2012, 09:44 AM
Yeah, not to mention the giant hole in the rear starboard side...

bturner2
07-27-2012, 09:55 AM
If the exterior is any indication on how the interior and trailer have been maintained you'll have a lot more than $2K into by the time you fix all the unseen gremlins. That boat in it's current condition wouldn't be worth more than $2K for me to touch it. But to each his own.

Just a thought - but if you have a budget of 7k or so...don't be in a rush, you might be able to even pick up a 1991 190 if someone is wanting to sell their boat, which is newer hull. I just sold a 1990 190 that was in nice shape, ran great, was buffed and waxed, ready to go, for 6k. I was motivated to sell, could've waited 3-4 months to get the price I wanted, but I wouldn't let the deal go sour for even $500. So don't feel afraid to look at a boat with an asking price of 8k and see what type of deal you might get.

mxhideout
07-27-2012, 12:05 PM
As much as I want a boat, I have learned how to be patient with buying bikes. It sucks, but yes, I do eventually find the deals. However, there are a lot more bikes that I look for than mastercrafts for sale around here. Kinda' surprised since there's so many lakes here too.

Unless you are doing all the work yourself, the interior alone is going to cost around over
1K. The last cover I had made was another $500. With the amount of neglect that the boat has seen, you will be lucky if the electrical is in working order.

If you are looking for a project boat and you are not in a hurry to get on the water (and he gives you the boat) then go for it. I'm just saying that you can find boats that have been taken care of and are ski ready for under 7K. It just depends on what your goal is.

07-27-2012, 10:31 PM
Yeah, we'd do everything ourselves. If we were to get it (probably won't anymore), we'd put new carpet in and redo the front seats and engine cover to start. You could be right about it being a junkpile, but it might still be worth 1000 bucks... We really wanted to look at that blue one in Milwaukee last weekend, but I still can't get a response out of the guy, and he just posted it again a couple days ago!

If you want the interior to look good on an older boat, you have to do it all at the same time. Doing just the front seats will result in mismatched interior that looks like a shoddy job (even if it was a great job). You have to keep things uniform in the old boats to have any chance at decent resale. Not that you want to flip the boat, but you have to keep resale value in mind when doing any sort of work on the old boats. At some point, you'll probably want to sell it.

07-31-2012, 03:22 PM
Teal isn't my favorite color either, but it wouldn't take much of a wrap to cover that up if you decided you couldn't live with the teal. It would be more work to deal with the interior.

mxhideout
08-01-2012, 12:48 PM
My dad called yesterday, hoping to look at it today, and the guy was suppose to call back last night.... Nothing yet. He didn't seem like he was in any hurry to sell it. I don't think he knows what a powerslot tranny is because he said the previous owner had it installed. He's probably thinking it's the prop.

Also, we wanted to look at this one too since they're 10 miles away: http://northernwi.craigslist.org/boa/3084454787.html
He sent pics and would take 5500, but my dad called a little bit ago and found out the bottom of the boat had been repaired, and the guy doesn't know why the engine was rebuilt (by previous owner), the upholstery was poorly re-done, and it needs a little restore...

No, he didn't look at that teal '89. The guy never called back. Oh well, we're pretty sure it didn't have powerslot (which is on top of our list for options), and the ski boom was a junk brand. It seems like all these mastercraft owners on craigslist have no idea what they're selling. We'll just keep waiting...

mxhideout
08-05-2012, 10:56 PM
Well we were set to leave on Friday night to look at this one because it's cheap and the guy said it has a powerslot. However, we wanted to see more pics of the hull, prop, rudder, and make sure it is one.... It's a good thing we waited, because I finally got some pics, and it does not have a powerslot. http://fortwayne.craigslist.org/boa/3170291321.html
