Think about it. No more crazy leaning boat, no more waiting, no guessing, no more fat sacs, back to wakeboarding in seconds, side to side transitions! Epic!

This could seriously be a game changer and I hand it to Malibu for stepping up to the plate and spending the time and money for the sport! Mastercrafts efforts are well, lacking to say the most.

That IS .... quite interesting. I'm not a surfer myself but I can see the advantages that surfgate offers. Sure beats the MC method of "bigger boat, more people, more ballast, more engine HP....and Oh yeah....WAY MORE Cha Ching! $$$$$

Props to Malibu...

HAHA Surf Tabs. They have never impressed me.

I am excited to see this in person. I want to think it will take a little more weight to get the size of wake we are used to with ballast now. Changing sides is a game changer for a lot of my customers.

If Malibu has this in their back pocket what does MasterCraft and Supra have in store for 2013?

More videos of 30's with stock plus 400#'s with Zane attempting to show of the surf wake?

At the very least, MC should be considering picking up a pro or two to showcase their surf waves!

I love Mastercraft boats, and I love wakesurfing. Really hoping they'll put forth some effort to keep my attention!

This is a cool idea but the surf side of the boat needs to be in the water more. The wake isn't that clean and it's not that tall.

Having had a 23 LSV with the wedge and full ballast system I can say that boat had extra ballast.

Its said to have full wakeboarding ballast. There's no way water transitioned between sides that fast. It was all due to tabs or gates of sorts.....

Yep, might have to get another Malibu. Waves could use a little more height but I bet extra weight could take care of that...

I will agree with all.......FRIKING AWESOME........I can tell you my wife drives like a champ and loves pulling me boarding and skiing, but she absolutely is terrified driving the boat during the busy times (well the only to surf) for surfing because it leans so much.........Showed her the video and she wants a BU pronto.

I have to say this and pure vert ballast have been two things that have got my attention over the years.

I am not sure I understand how the surf gate works to make a wave. I understand that the surf tab (or trim tabs as they have been called for years in the rest of the boating industry). if you want your boat to tilt to the port side, you trim down the starboard surf tab. So with the surf gate, do you push out the starboard gate to make the desired starboard side wave or does the starboard gate give you a port side wave?

Did the X30 Zane showcased have tabs on it?

Here it is deployed. Pretty simple...

Must say..... I like the ability to switch it up quickly. I have ONE friend that surfs Goofy... .and we make him wait until the end of the day to surf LOL. He may just have to buy a BU!!!

I may have to take my Engineering friend to the BU dealership and see if he can somehow replicate this

Just take a standard trim tab and install it horizontal instead of vertical ?

kgrove
07-16-2012, 06:10 PM
I'm perplexed how this works too. Does it push the tail to the side to make the boat move forward slightly off it's centerline axis?

It looks like it works like a plow. Turns a furrow of water over just like in the dirt (for the farmers out there)

Now that makes alot of sense and requires no space in the boat.

I never liked the idea of pumping water into a boat. ugh

I have spoken with my local Malibu dealer already and we're going to do what ever it takes to get me behind a Bu with Surf Gate as soon as possible.

Surf Gate is a $2500 option. Orders are being taken as of today and they will not land until September......Surf Gate is not "retrofittable".

Like others have mentioned, this wave isnt going to be as good as other boats with dialed ballast systems just yet. This may simply be marketed to the family that wants to surf, but are not die hards. It will be hard to determine just how well the wave can be dialed until it lands in the hands of non biased enthusiasts.... I'm not going to take Bu's sponsored riders word for it. Just yet.....

Seems like a great idea. Interesting that it is deployed on the non-surf side, but that makes sense, now, as it is apparently (according to one reviewer) just changing the point of convergence of the wake. Pretty cool that you weight the boat evenly ( and the the boat rides evenly). Talk about simplicity: sideways mounted trim tabs. Who woulda thunk it? Looking forward to some real world reviews and vidddies after Sept (not that I'm changing boats or anything).

Pretty much the same, not sure what you are getting at, I think it is a really cool piece of engineering and from the videos looks like it works great. The coolest part is being able to switch on the fly, way beyond my skill level, but my son would love the ability to surf and cross to each side sans rope. He does this now with the rope to get air off of the wave from the non surf side to surf side.

Am I going to run out and buy a Malibu because of it, probably not, but I like the innovation.

Not sure how well the gates will perform as you add more ballast and sink those tabs and the side of the boat into the water. More ballast would need a taller gates. Seems like you have a cool option but surfers are greedy looking for a taller, longer wakes. Not sure how your are going to dial it in to what you want.

Agreed!

I was all hyped and willing to fly to TN to go ride behind this and place an order if I liked it. They promised me a tour, and to view the boat, but couldnt promise me a quick session behind it.....

I rode behind this over the weekend. Honestly, not a fan. It was in a 23 but they had to sack out the boat in the bow and floor, the wake was clean and big but the shape was just not right. I'll stick to my surf tabs and factory ballast.

Doesnt look very durable either. A change in 10 or 15% because wear can create some significant changes in the shape of the surf wave. It will be interesting to see how well theses things hold up.

I'd like to see what the did to beef up the structure the supports the rudder, I bet that puts a hell of a load on the rudder

The "tab" is a fiberglass panel gelcoated to match the hull color with a Lenco trim tab actuator.

I spent an hour "fingering" one in a dealership a couple weeks ago. While not bad looking, the build quality was sub par! Materials also seemed cheap.

Potential, no doubt. Those accuators need to be moved off the transom though, in the way where they are on that boat.

I still say the Surf Gate is a good idea and, if nothing else, perhaps helps push the mfr's towards truly mult-function boats. I have a dream....I have a dream that someday we'll have a boat that puts out a wakeboard wake equal to the X-Star and a surf wake of an Enzo.

...and has a good fuel pump.

I love the idea of being able to easily switch between wakeboarding, port surfing, and starboard surfing, but this wave doesn't look particularly well formed. I'm interested in seeing further testing an examples. Maybe this is still a bad example.
