Hey guys I have a 2000 maristar 230 vrs with the LTR. What I'm curious about is how often should I change my transmission fluid and also what is the best stuff to get. Of course the next question being, what the best way, or tool to use to suck it out. Thanks.

I've got an '02 x-star, but I think we've got the same transmission.

I change mine at the end of the season as part of my winterization checklist.
I use 15w-40 motor oil (same as the LTR engine oil). They changed the recommendation from transmission fluid to 15w-40 motor oil for ZF Hurth v-drive transmissions of that vintage to reduce noise. I guess the thicker oil damps some vibrations.

I use a MityVac MV7400 to change the v-drive oil. Works great, and you don't spill a drop. There's no way to get the oil out, except through the dipstick hole at the top of the v-drive unit.

do you only suck the oil out of the hole, or do you disconnect the cooler lines and drain that too??? how much oil do you find you get out?

You can also remove the filter and suck it out through the hole beneath the filter. See this post below lots of good info..

Nice. Thanks. I'll have to give that a go. Looks like it might work better than the dipstick hole.
