Alright folks, I got my MSU tickets in the mail yesterday which makes me look forward to my second favorite past time of watching scores of games pumped directly into my favorite football spot. I know the following teams are represented but did I miss anyone that I can rib throughout the season?:

MSU, IU, Iowa, LSU, Georgia, Purdue, 'Bama, Minnesota?

GO GREEN, GO WHITE!!!!!

MSU? You need to take the Ohio out of your OhioProstar.
There is only one Big Ten team that needs to be talk of, and that is The Ohio State Buckeyes! In my northern Ohio location I'm around 44 miles from Ann Arbor, and I'm starting to smell again the stink that is drifting down from the worlds largest ash tray, a.k.a. the Big House to the hillbillys. I will not worry about East Lansing until game week, and the week they play the U of Meatchickens.

86Craft, Glad to see we dislike the same team with similar intensity. You must be around Sylvania. As my family was transplanted from Michigan early on, I maintained my Green blood even as many Bucks that tried to brain wash me. Thank goodness for all my relatives being MSU grads or I would have never made it.

BTW I did my undergrad work at Miami of Ohio, but couldn't shake my MSU roots. Either way I enjoy the fact that I have had to pull for a team that is average most years and occasionally gets a big upset like this one:

#1 ranked and not-beaten Ohio State Buckeyes 24 - Michigan State Spartans - 28.

It's the most wonderful time of the year. I love the smell of turf in the morning. As a former IU player I am required to chime in on this football talk. Now before we start bashing the Hoosiers, just let me tell you that I am a fan of all college sports. However, my opinions as to some programs will come as no surprise to many. I can say with some dignity that we won our share of games when I played, a few bowls, but no National Championship. I look forward to the chat in the upcoming weeks. My pre-season prediction has Iowa winning the Big-10 and Georgia for the National Championship. Anyone else like to make a prediction other than your alma-mater?

Looking at the field I would think that USC has a pretty good chance to repeat. They didn't look great last week, but the PAC 10 is going to be down this year although Cal might surprise some people. Big Ten, I would have to go with a Sleeper in Purdue.

My boss is an Auburn grad. We use a software package that alerts us when something is down within our network. It sends an email and plays a sound. The sound I chose is Auburns fight song, since it represents something down. He didn't find it funny, but I haven't changed it yet... :D

Leroy,
Andre Hall is not a familiar name, but it is possible that I have played with him. I played from '90 to '94. As for athletics, the program is in limbo right now. They are actively seeking a new athletics director and have started a $75 million capital campaign for the athletic program that would include facility upgrades for football, basketball, and administration. The past 8 years have been painfull to watch the struggles over power in athletics. Some of you may of heard of Miles Brand. He was IU's former president and now head of the NCAA. If he had his way, the athletic department would be dissolved and the university would run the programs. (Just like Vanderbilt). Nobody wants the job at IU so the athletic program is running itself right now. Fortunetly our new school president is a big football fan and is spending a lot of time trying to rebuilding the program.

Enough talk, let's play some football!!!!

What's the news on Oregon State's ball team, they play LSU in Tiger Statium Saturday!

OhioProstar
09-01-2004, 06:27 PM
Sporting News says:
Oregon State at LSU -- Saturday at 6 p.m. ET

Why to watch: The defending national champions (no, not USC you media types) get their turn at bat ready to stake a claim to the number one spot. As good as LSU might be, this won't be a walk in the park against an Oregon State team with (don't laugh SEC fans) the best defense the Tigers might face all year long. LSU isn't getting the universal respect it thinks it deserves coming off a championship season and is looking to make a major statement. Oregon State is looking to play well to bring more respect to the Pac 10 and show that it's going to be a factor in the conference race.
Why Oregon State might win: O.K., so maybe Georgia will be the best defense LSU faces this season outside of its own practices, but Oregon State's is right up there finishing seventh in the nation last season with seven starters returning. Yeah, this D really is that good with a brick wall of a run defense allowing only 84 yards per game (fourth in the nation.) This is a new year and a new team, but the Beaver front seven is good enough to keep RB Justin Vincent in check and force new starting QB Marcus Randall to make plays through the air. That's not a good thing against Brandon Browner and the tremendous OSU secondary.

Why LSU might win: Oregon State QB Derek Anderson didn't meet an interception he didn't like to throw and LSU's secondary will be drooling to make the big play. Without RB Steven Jackson, OSU needs Anderson, its best offensive talent, to come through with a huge performance; that's asking a lot out of the streaky passer. The Beaver O line is very good, but it's going to have a hard time protecting the relatively immobile Anderson against the onslaught of the Tiger blitz.
Who to watch: Two of the nation's best defensive ends will be on display as Oregon State's Bill Swancutt and LSU's Marcus Spears will need to be accounted for on every play. Swancutt has 25.5 career sacks and could single-handedly disrupt everything the LSU passing game tries to do. Spears made eight sacks last year and should force Anderson to hurry at least a few throws. The words pick six could come up a couple of times if these two ends have big games.

What will happen: LSU will win but it isn't going to be a blowout until late. Oregon State simply doesn't have the offensive weapons to keep up hoping its defense takes advantage of any mistakes the young LSU skill players make. It's LSU on national television in Death Valley at night; OSU has to overcome the early emotion. If it isn't 14-0 after the first ten minutes this should be a heck of a ball game.

Must See Rating: (5 lock yourself in a room to watch - 1 Plan Star Jones' wedding on The View) ... 4.5
Line: LSU -19
Fearless Prediction: LSU 31 ... Oregon State 13

bradamerry
09-01-2004, 07:39 PM
All Tiger fans like that prediction!!!! :D

mastercraft1995
09-01-2004, 08:07 PM
Well, well I'm from Oregon and as much as I hate to say it Derek Anderson will throw 5 picks and fumble twice in the game. 2 of his mistake's will be returned for TD's. The Beaver D is very good but with the Offense on the bench and the heat the Beav's are going to lose I hate to say it.

LSU 20
Derek Anderson 14
Total for LSU = 34

OSU 14 if special Teams returns one or Anderson get's luck and throws a bomb.

For anyone with eligibility left OSU is looking for a Kicker.

Jake,
Your golfers, I mean gophers will be pretty tough this season. I gotta give credit to Glen Mason for turning the program around. A couple of my teammates used to be Grad asst. for a couple of years. I am going down to see the Minn. play the Hoosiers on Oct. 30th. At least we're playing a ranked team this weekend. Tell Mason to toughen up his schedule. The 1-AA Redbirds is not going to help in the post season.

Mastercraft1995,
First of all, I don't have any great expectations about this game. So, I won't be crying if we lose. Second, if it is a close game then Oregon has a lot to lose. The only way you guys stay in the top 25 is if the Ducks blow us out. I can only hope for a good game. You would think that having an ex-Notre Dame quarterback would help a program. Go Hoosiers.

No. 7 Ohio State vs. N.C. State (3:30 p.m., ABC)

"N.C. State lost four-year starting quarterback Philip Rivers after last season, but the Wolfpack brought back 18 other starters and has their most athletic team since coach Chuck Amato came to Raleigh in 2000.

The health of tailback T.A. McLendon will be crucial this week because N.C. State just seems to play with more confidence when he is in the lineup, and with Jay Davis making his first start against a big-time opponent, the Pack will need all the weapons it can get.

Expect N.C. State to have success moving the ball, but what the Wolfpack does in the red zone will dictate whether or not they are truly successful offensively. If they have to settle for field goals rather than scoring touchdowns that will be a huge key for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes will also learn some things about a young quarterback on Saturday with Justin Zwick making his first career start away from Ohio Stadium. He is behind an offensive line that has been reshuffled, and at this point, appears to be OSU's Achilles heel. How that group performs against a very athletic Wolfpack front seven will have a lot do do with how this one turns out.

If Ohio State cannot establish the run with Lydell Ross and Antonio Pittman, leaving Zwick in obvious passing situations, the Buckeyes will see a lot of pressure both in the form of blitzes and the rush from N.C. State's front four, especially end Mario Williams.

N.C. State is athletic enough up front to contain the run with only the front seven, but if they have to bring the safeties down to slow the ground attack they will become vulnerable to one-on-one matchups against Santonio Holmes and the rest of the OSU receivers.

The Wolfpack should get a big boost from playing at home, though, with that fast defense playing an inspired game against an inexperienced offense. The loss of 14 players to the NFL will come back to haunt the Buckeyes in this one because they will simply miss the leadership that group provided too much. N.C. State wins, 27-23."

yea thats what i told my buddies before the game...the tigers are gonna win....

man brad that is by far the best college football game i have ever seen...Tommy T. definately got out coached by Nick Saben...at half time they showed the stats on the jumbotron and LSU and Auburn were both pretty equal on everything they were comparing...the main difference was the TD LSU got early in the game. there were a lot of calls that we didnt really agree with but it all worked out fine in the end....a great game, next year in Baton Rouge....I'll take the tigers to win it!!!!! :D

Smitty: fair enough...I agree the gophers could benefit from a tougher pre-season schedule. Just so long as Glen doesn't go all "Colorado State" on us (preseason schedule: Colorado, USC, Minnesota...result 0-3). Actually, Toledo was supposed to be good (ranked in top 25) and Colorado State is better than their 0-3 record. I'll give you one on the Redbirds, those IAA schools aren't going to do anything for our "strength of schedule". I guess we'll just have to win the big 10 to get into a good bowl :D

Even though my trusty Wolfpack got beat, OSU doesn't have much to brag about after that game (still, a win's a win). Five field goals and less than 200 total yards of offense? N.C. State's QB just doesn't have the experience to be really effective yet. That and the 14 penalties, 2 fumbles and 3 interceptions and the local high school team could have beat them.

However, last year's N.C. State -- Ohio State game was a great one (except for the end).

A farmer was milking his cows one day when he heard faint music coming from nearby. After hunting for a time, he discovered the sound was loudest near one particular calf, and was even louder near the calf's tail.

Putting his head close to the calf's hind end, he heard voices
singing "Rocky Top".

Amazed, the next day he put the calf in his truck and drove the
animal to a veterinarian. When the vet asked him what was going on, the farmer told him. The Vet went around behind the calf and listened, too. He agreed he heard "Rocky Top" but didn't seem particularly excited.

"Man, how can you stand there and not be amzaed?" the farmer asked.

The Vet said, "Bud, I'm an Auburn graduate and I've been listening
to *******s sing that song all of my life."

I agree with you on the USC thing...................what a crock.

Smitty,
Alex Smith came out of a little town right across the border from my hometown. He got some serious hype back then and had he been taller than 5-8 he may have gone to the Pros. Of course around that same time just north of Eaton was a back name Curtis Enis that got ALL the press.

Ohioprostar,
Alex decided to go to the NFL early after Cam Cameron took over the program. He needed another year of development before going. He could of made a great special teams player. The fastest white guy I've ever seen. Ran a <4.5 40. Great back to block for.

Auburn and Tennessee will meet again in the SEC championship game. I can only hope that the beating will not be as bad as the regular season.

The SE Conference is by far the toughest football conference in the NCAA. A very good Auburn team beat a pretty good Georgia team. As much as I am not an Auburn fan I would put them up against USC or Oklahoma.

i agree...the SEC is by far the toughest conference to play in...now auburn might not be the best team in the nation but i believe they are better than Oklahoma.....The politics involved in the BCS really make it tough for a SEC team to have a good shot at the national championship....USC and Oklahoma havent beat anybody that really impresses me....AUBURN has played 3 teams that were in the top ten before Auburn beat them.....i havent seen any other team do that this year. :twocents:

OhioProstar,
If your going to be at the Western Illinois game maybe we can meet up. I'll be in B-town next week from Wednesday thru Sunday. I might even be going to the game. You definately want to hit Kirkwood Ave. This is right of campus on the Westside. I would start at Nick's (http://www.nicksenglishhut.com/) . Most traditional bar in town. Across the street you'll find the Upstairs Pub and Uncle Festers. Upstairs is fairly good, a little cramped at times. Uncle Festers is for all ya freaky folks. Our you can go up street (200 ft.) to Kilroy's (http://www.kilroys-bloomington.com/mainpage2.html). Thats usually where you'll find the most drinking going on. If your looking for more space and big crowds then head to downtown on North Walnut. You'll find Kilroy's Sportsbar and few other places. Another favorite of mine is the Bluebird (http://www.thebluebird.ws/). They have great bands (not unusual to find John M. playing some nights).

Not so fast....................

When Oklahoma played Texas they were ranked 5th.
When Oklahoma played Oklahoma State they were ranked 8th.
When Oklahoma played Texas A&M they were ranked 10th.

That's three teams ranked in the top ten that Oklahoma beat this year. In addition, all three were on the road.......................

BTW The Citadel, Louisiana Tech, and Louisiana-Monroe are not impressive wins from the outside looking in. :D

The Clemson/ South Carolina fight, which now they will not play in a bowl game, is screwing the Independence Bowl in Shreveport. South Carolina was the front runner for the SEC spot, but now Arkansas is the only hope. But they have to beat LSU tomorrow to become bowl eligible. Who should I cheer for   ??? We could end up with some team from the WAC playing in the I-Bowl  !!!

OU/Texas is played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas every year. It's been that way since 1929. I've been to the last 5 so I've never seen OU lose that game :)

As for the BCS - tell the administration at Auburn to quit *****ing about the BCS and schedule teams other than Louisiana Monroe, The Citadel, and Louisiana Tech. That's why they won't play for a national championship, assuming both OU and USC win this weekend.

Bobby
11-30-2004, 07:41 PM
Oh, but I do believe that OU and Auburn should be playing for the National Championship. During the Auburn/Alabama game they showed a strength of schedule stat on CBS and it went a little something like this-

USC - 91st
OU - 14th
AU - 21st

well that makes more sense. The Iron Bowl, between Bama and Auburn use to be played at Legion Field in Birmingham every year. Each year they would swap so every other year they were the home team. assuming that this game has the same set up, i guess they show oklahoma as being the home team because it was there year. makes more sense now....just out of curiosity who has the #1 toughest schedule?

well, it looks like cbs has updated their version of strength of schedule. in their world, texas a&m has the #1 schedule as of now (OU, Texas, Utah to name a few), OU has #15, USC #20 and Auburn #37

Bobby
11-30-2004, 11:42 PM
and also, i really dont see how USC's strength of schedule can be ahead of Auburn's. Cal and Va Tech are the only two teams worth mentioning that they have played. I would say ASU, but they got beaten by Arizona. NOt only did AZ win, their horrible offense scored 37.

Just reading back over the last few pages of posts about the bowl games. For all the people dogging USC for their ranking and ease of schedule, it sure is quiet in here today. That said, I'm glad Texas didn't have to play USC. We had enough trouble beating Michigan. :headbang:

/wishes his team could've busted 50 pts on OU instead of it being the other way around. Knows OU has beat the snot out of Texas for 5 years running. Doesn't need to be reminded of that fact.
