lol, they are undefeated against teams that have 3 or more losses. They beat the #7 team by 7 points who were a 3 loss team. They beat one team in the top 20 before the bowl game.

You don't beat one team and get to claim anything.

Just like Wisconsin should have been in it last year over the suckeyes. At least they probably wouldn't have lost 31 to 0. So take Clemson and UCF this year and it would have probably been a worse loss then the suckeyes last year.

The suckeyes and UCF would have had something in common. A team that shouldn't have been in the playoffs.

I can see where you'd be ok with that so long as it tries to bring Bama and the SEC down.

It warms my heart!

I think it's great. Those kids worked as hard as any other and they did all they could do. It's not their fault they don't play anybody all year so they should not be punished. I hope they enjoy their parade and get a nice ring out of it.

"Co-National Champs" is a bit far-fetched though...

Seriously, all anyone needs to do is look at Notre Dame's undefeated 2012 season and what happen to them in the BCS game to get an idea what would happen to UCF.

ND played a stronger schedule that year then UCF has ever played but neither team should have been in a playoff spot nor a title game.

UCF “claims” a national championship? That’s precious.

93Prostar190

UCF had a nice run ... but they should not be considered Co-National champs ... they just did not play a good enough schedule to make that claim.

I do believe that if in today's College Football in Division I, you can run the table, you should be able to get a shot at the playoff ..... but we will need more than 4 slots to ever make that happen.

Good publicity for UCF and I am happy for them ... let's see if Frosty can recruit all the way to the Heartland ....

I don't have to be grateful. It's because of Alabama that the suckeyes weren't in the playoffs!!! Moreover, when the suckeyes are in the playoffs they suffer a 31 - 0 loss; the worst loss in the College Football Playoff history!!!

You mean like last year when the suckeyes made the playoffs and were blown out like Michigan state the year before? Big 10 playoff legacy is on a role.

Now I will agree this isn't Bama's greatest year. I felt they were a much better team last year but to say the didn't deserve a shot a in the playoffs isn't fair. Again look at Ohio States entrance in the 2014 playoff's. Everyone felt they didn't deserve it then and look what happened.

I’m pretty young but old enough to remember when the reason for making the playoffs was so teams like ‘07 Boise State would get a shot at the ring. This held true when they let Washington in but imho they fell short of that this year by keeping UCF out.

But at the same time whats frustrating about that though is that there is no team that made the playoffs that I’d swap UCF for, which brings us back to the need for more teams in the playoff which of course is a “Stop stop its already dead” topic- no need to keep beating it. Either way, I think UCF claiming the natty could help expand the playoff, and no one beat them so I’m fine if they wanna claim it. Auburn losing sure didn’t make the SEC look good.

The CFP wasn't designed to give marginal teams that play weak schedules a shot at a ring.

It was designed so the 4 best teams in country, regardless of conference, as seen by the committee, would play for a National Title.

Hmm, according to this alabama has claimed a national title at least twice when they weren't crowned. They claim 16 titles but the NCAA only acknowledges 14.

He is a smart QB, but he just doesn't have the arm. How many times have you seen receivers open downfield have to wait on the ball because he can't get it there and they get tackled instead of scoring? Last season we barely beat meatchicken because of his inability to throw the ball downfield. His legacy is great because he was there for 4 years with one of the best coaches in college football and he isn't good enough to go play on Sundays. I appreciate what he did, but it was frustrating to know that #7 was on the bench and could have taken this team farther this season. I think the Buckeyes won the 2014 National Championship because Cardale Jones can actually deliver the ball downfield accurately and in stride. If not for Jones, OSU doesn't beat alabama in that game.

Alabama is the worst violator of the we're-champs-cause-we-said-so tradition. The Tide claim 16 national titles, but the NCAA only acknowledges 14. Both Alabama and Notre Dame claim the 1973 national title, but the UPI Coaches' Poll awarded its title to the Tide before the Sugar Bowl, where they lost to, yep, Notre Dame.

You mean the UPI Couches' Poll awarded the title to the Alabama Crimson Tide? Got ya.

Kudos to Saban for making the move in the second half at the biggest stage. There is absolutely no way we would see that happen with Meyer. Even if the backup beats your rival when you are down.

OSU is still very fortunate to have Meyer has a head coach and I wouldn't trade him for Saban just because there are traits I value in Meyer over winning. However, now you have a quarterback battle next year. I am curious to see how it goes.

I didn't watch a single snap, just reading some of the aftermath. Curious to know the ratings on this one for ESPN.

It seems like Bama got away with quite a bit. It's especially sad to see when a player actually makes a really good play and it gets called back (offside call). Phenomenal read by 87.

Bama won the final game, which is the one we count. So sure give them the crown. However, what would the game be like in two weeks? Or three weeks? Or next week? I feel like it's a game of rock paper scissors that the SEC is playing. Auburn kills georgia, Auburn beats Bama, Bama doesn't go to title, Georgia kills Auburn, Bama "beats" Georgia. If this were a math problem, who gets the crown lol.

I didn't watch a single snap, just reading some of the aftermath. Curious to know the ratings on this one for ESPN.

From sportsmediawatch.com:

Monday’s Alabama-Georgia College Football Playoff National Championship had a 16.7 overnight rating across the ESPN family of networks, up 9% from last year (15.3) and up 4% from 2016 (16.0), both of which pit Alabama against Clemson. ESPN alone posted a 16.0.

Compared to the previous all-SEC national championship, Alabama-LSU in 2012, overnights jumped 21% from a 13.8.

The 16.7 overnight is the highest for the national championship since the first year of the playoff, Ohio State-Oregon in 2015 (18.9), and the second-highest since the game moved to ESPN in 2011.

All-time, Alabama-Georgia is tied for ninth among national championship games since the formation of the Bowl Championship Series.

The Tide’s overtime win peaked early, hitting an 18.4 from 9:45-10 PM ET as Georgia opened a 13-0 lead. During the overtime period from 12-12:15 AM, it had a 17.1.

It seems like Bama got away with quite a bit. It's especially sad to see when a player actually makes a really good play and it gets called back (offside call). Phenomenal read by 87.

Oh, and if you want this play called correctly...there was pre-snap motion. The block still wouldn't have counted. Should have been false start Bama, move the ball back 5 yards and kick. But, what do you expect out of the B1G officiating crew? ;)

Had the shoe been on the other foot and Alabama had led the ball game and Georgia had come from behind and won all the Bama haters would be talking about how awesome Georgia was. Yeah there were some missed calls but they were on both sides of the ball. Had Georgia won I would say they were the better team but Alabama didn't quit and for their effort they are now the 2018 National Champions. So I have two words for the Alabama haters out there.
SUCK IT!

I hate Bama. I hate the SEC
I also don't think that Bama should have been in the playoffs....#3 un their own division
I almost had to turn the volume off because of the obvious bias from the announcers. My kids even mentioned it before I said anything
I think that the kid that threw the punch should have been ejected. I also think that Saban should have made him sit in the locker room without a jersey on

I think Bama, like the Patriots, get calls or no calls in their favor. It doesn't always happen, but it happens more for them than others

I had tickets to this game, but sold them after OU lost to Georgia

having said all of that

I was highly entertained by the entire playoff season. Great games, great stories....etc
It was fun to see 2 freshman QB's go at it. I was kinda rooting for the kid that came off the bench and led his team to a win. Great story.....but I hate Bama :-)

What is it exactly you value over winning? I’d trade any football coach for Saban in a heartbeat. Best coach in football by far (NFL and NCAA). Look at the way Jalen handled being benched in the second half (if that ever happened to Baker Mayfield he would have pitched a fit). Watch how humble Tao was in the post game interviews. You think those kids just became/stayed like that on their own? That’s good coaching. He not only wins, but he makes his players better athletes and better people. I’m no tide fan, but Nick is possibly the best football coach of all time.

I agree that Saban is a great (maybe the best ever) coach. I also think he's able to not recruit problems. I'm guessing that Hurts and Tua are already good kids and don't need to be taught how to not act like idiots on national TV. It will be interesting to see what happens with Mekhi Brown. I'm not sure how much saban knew of what was happening but watching it on tv, the kid at least should have been sent to the locker room. Instead he came back in and played after his tantrum. I'm wondering what the resolution will be. I don't think Saban can let that go unanswered and maintain control of the team...

Many haters aren't so good at counting (or spelling).

Alabama finished tied for 1st in the SEC West and lost the tie breaker (head-to-head) to Auburn. That dropped them down to 2nd in the SEC West.

But, what the hey? Never let actual facts get in the way of a good rant, right?

Just for giggles (or additional info) Alabama, Georgia, and Auburn all finished with 7-1 records in SEC play. And yet, you and other anti-pundits seem to think that that somehow separates them.

Have a good day. Oh, and this "lack of national appeal" argument doesn't hold up when it's the 2nd highest rated game on ESPN, ever.

For those folks bringing up some missed calls ... .... any Coach worth his weight will tell you, win the game and don't put it into the ref's hands. Bad calls are part of the game and both teams need to overcome them.

I bet getting a championship on the college level and a Super Bowl on the professional level is like comparing apples to oranges.

I would really like to see the Cleveland Browns play Alabama just to give people a frame of reference on this. BTW, I don’t think it would workout as well as the Alabama fans would like to believe.

Well, if you put Saban's two years against Belichick's first two years Saban has a better record.

You obviously don't read my entire posts and just go to the part that you want to argue with me, so I'll reiterate what I said. Saban is perhaps the best coach in college, but not in the sport. The NFL is the pinnacle of football. The best coach in the pinnacle league is therefore the best coach. The best coach in the pinnacle league is Belichick, therefore he is the best coach in the sport. If you want to go on and argue with this because of how many National title Saban has won or some other bastardized rational, then I will offer you that Larry Kehres from Mount Union was better than Saban because he won 11 National Championships.

Oh, and this last Championship was shared with UCF.

I hate Bama. I hate the SEC.
I also don't think that Bama should have been in the playoffs....#3 un their own division

Sigh.....I can't believe I'm responding to this. Alabama was not 3rd in their division. They are in the SEC West division. They were tied for 1st in that division with Auburn. Auburn however had the head-to-head tiebreaker, that's why they went to the SEC Championship. How you get 3rd in the SEC West I'll never know. I guess your putting Alabama behind LSU?

Look...the playoff committee has made it clear that the intent is to put the 4 best teams in the playoff. They consider strength of schedule, record, conference championships, etc to determine the best 4 teams. A conference championship is not a requirement though. Think about it...if that were the case, there would never be 2 teams from the same conference even if they were two of the best 4. I'm not making this up, it's on their website.

Ok, you said you don't believe Alabama should be in the top 4. Since you mentioned having kids....let's say your betting your kids future on one football game. You can either have Alabama or any team NOT on the top 4. Who would you pick?

Heads up CP.

To be a National Champion you must first make it to the CFP so it's impossible for the suckeyes and UCF to be co-champs. :D Maybe next year? Well for UCF anyway. We know the suckeyes will have to wait 10 years between titles and 2024 isn't that far off. :D

A major shift in recruiting this year.

I have to wonder if they volume of recruits that went to Alabama over the last 3 or 4 years has HS seniors going else where to ensure they get playing time before their junior year at Bama.

Lots of top 4 and 5 stars going to both Georgia and Clemson.

Yeah I read that. He needs to stay out of it and let Jalen do what he feels is right. There comes a time when you have to let them earn their way. Jalen seems like a good kid, daddy needs to let him grow up. A Jalen , Tua tandem could make for a bad was season.

This part looks kind of bad:

Zach Smith, then in his fourth year on UF’s staff, was handcuffed and arrested for aggravated battery on a pregnant victim. Meyer said last week at Big Ten Media Days that in 2009 he and his wife Shelley “advised for counseling and wanted to help” the couple.

“As I do many times, most coaches and people in leadership positions, you receive a phone call,” Meyer said at Big Ten Media Days. “The first thing you do is tell your boss, let the experts do their jobs.

“We're certainly not going to investigate. It came back to me that what was reported wasn't actually what happened.”

A few days after Zach’s 2009 arrest, Courtney said two of Meyer’s closest friends – Hiram de Fries and Earle Bruce – asked her to drop the charges. Bruce is Zach Smith’s grandfather, de Fries is Meyer’s “life coach.”

Bruce, who died in April, has a special place in Meyer’s heart. Bruce succeeded Woody Hayes at Ohio State from 1979-87, posting an 81-26-1 record in nine seasons.

“He is the strongest relationship I’ve ever had other than my father,” Meyer said last week. “I’ve made that clear many, many times.”

Bruce and Zach’s mother drove from Ohio to Gainesville to ask Courtney to drop the charges, Courtney said. Courtney said she also received a call from de Fries to set up a meeting at Panera Bread on SW Archer Road in Gainesville.

Meyer and de Fries’ relationship goes back more than 20 years, when Meyer was an assistant at Colorado State in the 1990s. Unofficially, de Fries has been a professional life skills expert the past two decades. His official title at Ohio State: special assistant to the head coach.

In “Urban’s Way,” a 2008 book on Meyer written by Buddy Martin and authorized by Meyer, Meyer said: “Hiram is like my uncle. Hiram is my ‘chemistry coach.’ When I was a young coach, I always said I wanted to have an older guy as the chemistry coach on my staff to help us all get on the same page.”

When asked last week how important de Fries was to the Ohio State program, senior offensive tackle Isaiah Prince said: “Having Coach Hiram around, he’s like the grandfather of the team. He’s got that wisdom. He has been here a long time and he has been through a lot. He always knows when something is wrong even when you don’t say anything. He’s a great resource to have. Everybody loves him.”

On a July morning in 2009, Courtney Smith sat across the table from de Fries, a former attorney and Shell Oil executive. Courtney said de Fries pressured her to drop the charges.

“He said ‘if you don’t drop the charges, Zach will never coach again,’ ” Courtney said. “ ‘He’s never hit you before. He was drinking. He’ll probably never do it again. You should think about giving him a second chance.’ “

Ultimately, Courtney said she relented to de Fries and didn’t press charges. Courtney had convinced herself this would never happen again.

She was wrong.

This part could be problematic too. And we don't know what text messages and emails are on Urban Meyer's University issued cell phone. But you can be assured that it's being audited right now. And, we know from the Hugh Freeze situation that pretty much everything on that phone can be acquired by the press and attorneys via the freedom of information act.

The Ohio State University's sexual misconduct policy also may have been violated. Included in the Employees Duty to Report section it says:

"anyone who supervises faculty, staff, students, or volunteers" is responsible "in addition to the requirement of reporting incidents of sexual assault, the following members of the university community have an additional obligation to report all other incidents of sexual misconduct, when they receive a disclosure of sexual misconduct or become aware of information that would lead a reasonable person to believe that sexual misconduct may have occurred involving anyone covered under this policy. These individuals must report the incident within five work days of becoming aware of such information."

If Urban Meyer knew about the domestic violence issues, he may have violated his contract and could be fired with cause. The contract says he must "promptly report to Ohio State's Title IX Coordinator for Athletics any known violations of Ohio State's Sexual Misconduct Policy (including but not limited to sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, intimate violence and stalking) that involve any student, faculty or staff."

When asked specifically if he knew of the domestic violence incidents with Zach Smith, or if he had been told of them, Meyer said, “I was never told about anything. Never anything came to light, never had a conversation about it. So I know nothing about it. I asked people back at the office to call and see what happened, and they came back and said they know nothing.”

However, text messages I have obtained sent from Courtney Smith, Meyer’s wife Shelley; and other Ohio State coaches’ wives show Urban Meyer and a number of Ohio State assistant coaches were aware of Smith’s domestic violence issues for several years.

Courtney said Shelley Meyer, Urban’s wife of nearly three decades, knew about the abuse that begin in 2009, continued in 2015 and culminated with Zach Smith being served a domestic violence civil protection order last week.

Courtney said she and Shelley often discussed Zach’s domestic violence.

“Shelley said she was going to have to tell Urban,” Courtney said. “I said: ‘That’s fine, you should tell Urban.’ I know Shelley did everything she could.”

Shelley Meyer is a registered nurse and instructor of Clinical Practice at the Ohio State University College of Nursing. She too is bound by Title IX standards.

We'll see if Rece Davis' prediction is accurate. He basically said on ESPN about 1.5 hrs ago that administrative leave = working out details for his departure.

These elite coaches have such large egos they all seem to believe there is a certain level of immunity. Putting him on paid leave is not a good sign. Perhaps i am on the wrong side, but why should Urban Meyer, or any head coach, be responsible for the domestic affairs of their employees?

Do you want your boss asking about your marital relationship and then calling the cops without any verifiable proof of an incident?

If that assistant did beat his wife, which is no good as we can all agree, then that is his business and is not the responsibility of his boss to do anything with.

I agree with you (I am a Buckeye Fan in full disclosure) but there is some level of responsibility under Title iX to report on conduct of your staff/employees ... that would be the ultimate issue or if he lied about that ...

Sad is also that it is clear that Shelly Meyer was offering support to a domestic violence victim and offered assistance that is lost in all this ....

This is the part of Title IX that I think is the most relevant in this case (I'm not a lawyer). What remains to be seen is the correlation due to the fact that Zach was an employee and his wife was not a student. But still, there is an implied obligation to escalate and pursue an end to this type of behavior.

Further, according to an April 2011 letter issued by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, "The sexual harassment of students, including sexual violence, interferes with students' right to receive an education free from discrimination and, in the case of sexual violence, is a crime."[48]

The letter, named the Dear Colleague Letter, states that it is the responsibility of institutions of higher education "to take immediate and effective steps to end sexual harassment and sexual violence."[49] The letter illustrates multiple examples of Title IX requirements as they relate to sexual violence, and makes clear that, should an institution fail to fulfill its responsibilities under Title IX, the Department of Education can impose a fine and potentially deny further institutional access to federal funds.

Considering A&M hasn't beat LSU since joining the SEC, you should be worried. Its very similar to what LSU deals with since losing to BAMA in the championship game, Bama is the team they circle on the schedule every year and coaches get fired because of it.

What doesn't make sense about the whole situation is that every time they went to court the charges were dropped. WHY?

I have zero clue why this happened, but I don't think Urban should be fired for something that he has Zero control over. I watched the interview the ex-wife gave and she admitted that she told her parents and his parents and yet they did nothing.

Also, we all know that domestic violence between a wife and husband is a lot of hearsay and 9 times our of 10, they believe the women over the men. How do we know this wasn't all provoked by the wife? She could have been punching/kicking her husband, and he defended himself by restraining her.

There is so much that we don't know about the case, but what happen to innocent until proven guilty? The WR Coach was never charged for any crime so why Urban should be fired because this happened away from the university?

This whole thing is a very slippery slope.

I feel sorry for the players. He is unfortunately another coach who, it appears, took wins above all else. These elite coaches have such large egos they all seem to believe there is a certain level of immunity. Putting him on paid leave is not a good sign. If he was truly innocent they would not have done this. At this point OSU is covering their asses against what spiraled at Florida when his health “suddenly deteriorated”. How convenient, Urban. If this is true he is a scumbag. No matter what school he’s at. Tressell was booted over tattoos. This is far worse.
I do not feel sorry for the players. They only use college football as a stepping stone to try to get into the NFL. They accept a 4 Year scholarship and and rarely graduate with a degree. They have no loyalty to the university or the fans. They are no longer student athletes, just athletes attending college.

I don't think that is accurate for all universities. Heck I wouldn't have thought an SEC school like Florida was like that

Not sure I agree with this at all. Most players don’t end up in the pro level. My best friend is a Prof at Ohio State and he complains about the students that get the pass but is quick to let me know that it’s only a handful of kids. More good than bad is his opinion.

So here's a question, if Urban was alerted to the situation back in 2015 by the school administration (people above him), does he deserve to be fired?

The biggest question was if he covered things up. There is quite a bit of evidence out there that shows he did not.

Not for me to determine. If he misspoke that's one thing. If he lied then that's a problem.

You know what's funny, 10, 15, 20 years ago no one would have given a crap about this.

Do I think he should be fired even if he lied? Not really. I mean in the scope of the program does it really matter? No, not really. He found out about the arrest and fired the guy.

Now what's going on at Maryland is a real problem because that kid DIED. Those guys could face criminal charges for manslaughter.

Here's something to ponder...Let's say, they give Urban a 2-4 game suspension, and maybe Gene Smith gets fired or resigns or he gets some kind of official reprimand. What happens after that? You think things go back to normal? I'm sure THEY hope that they would. But, what if 100,000 #metoo protesters show up in Columbus? That's not going to be a good look for the University. Are they then going to have to modify the punishments to save face? Are the smart enough to even think that far in advance?

I mean you can't be too smart if you're not prepared to talk about the history of controversial coach at the largest media event of the year, a mere 1 day after you fired the guy. right? ;)

The media has turned into the “find the dirt” investigators with sports, politics, everything. The constant search for a “fall guy”. Everyone has things they wish they hadn’t done. Public figures of all kinds are under the greatest amount of scrutiny in history. Twitter loves this BREAKING NEWS ****. TMZ is worse. Sad really. A 2-4 game suspension for what? Potentially misleading the media? Zach Smith wasn't charged with anything under the 2015 incident. When the mother of the daughter comes out and says her daughter is making most of this up, just wow. I actually work in Powell (where Zach Smith lived). We have a couple of female accountants that knew about Courtney through a friend. They said she was crazy as well. There were reports about her basically creating a "cry wolf" situation with the police. They are Ohio State fans so I basically all I said to myself is "time will hopefully tell" . Then the other story came out with both mothers backing Zach... Not a good look for the Courtney.

Urban was prepared to talk about why he recently fired a coach. He gave enough details to try to state why he had been let go, but didn't want to get further into for the sake of that family. He wasn't prepared to talk about the 2015 incident where no one was charged. Urban sounded like perhaps he heard that Zach Smith was charged with a crime, which if that's the case then he's right to say someone making up a story for a headline is dumb.

For the record, when the news first broke, I said if Urban covered up domestic violence, he deserves to be fired. If anyone above him covered it up, they deserve to be fired. It doesn't look like any of this is the case.

Under Title 9 rules, If you have any reason to suspect you are required to report it. It is not your job to investigate nor decide to pursue or not. That is what the Title 9 office is for. I agree with some of the comments about you are guilty first but in today's world, you better error on the side of caution if you suspect anything. Sad but true folks......

Another way to look at it is they are taking two weeks to build a case to let him go. After Zach Smith claimed that Gene Smith called him to be on the first plane back to Columbus back in 2015 for the allegations, that seemed enough for me to exonerate Meyer. His superiors knew about the allegations and there still aren't any reports of Meyer covering anything up (which is why he would be let go_

You would have thought someone would have ask Gene "did you know about this? did anyone from Meyer's camp report it to you?" I seemed like that answer was yes, so Urban followed that protocol.
