If you win in the regular season and lose in the SB do you get to split anything? :D

There's a chance they do in the BCS.

I would agree with you if not for this (http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=313220066). You can't drop a game to a .500 unranked team and expect to play for the title!!

Extenuating circumstances. No two ways about it.

If I was Iowa, I would have been happy to play the game at a later date. Very tragic indeed. :(

It was Iowa State.

I was confused earlier when you mentioned OSU and Iowa. Figured you were talking about Ohio State versus the Hawkeyes somehow.

No, just no. No one made excuses about an F4 tearing through Tuscaloosa killing 40+ people, including students.

Yes they both had to overcome obstacles off the field but that should have nothing to do with winning games.

It is deplorable to try and use the plane crash as an excuse for the loss. If that was the reason they never would have been up 24-7. Were they not grieving at that point? Did the grief hit them at halftime? Pretty sure Alabama never used the death of one of their players right before the season as an excuse for anything.

Not using the "grief" as an excuse. They lost, on the road, in double OT. I simply think OSU, based on Top 25 wins, SOS, etc., deserves it as much as Alabama. Everyone is using the "who you lost to" to determine everything--there's other factors. We just need a better system, that's all. I don't have a dog in this fight. Folks with Tuscaloosa next to their Location ID are pre-judged as having a biased to Alabama, my bad. Maybe you're an Auburn fan???;)

The way they calculate SOS (strength of schedule) makes it virtually worthless. It is calculated simply by adding the win/loss records of all your opponents.

Using that metric, the Illinois game against Arkansas State (10-2) increased their SOS as much as Stanford's game against USC (10-2) increased theirs. Wisconsin's SOS improved more from their game against Northern Illinois (10-3) than it did against Nebraska (9-3).

SOS is one of those things that looks meaningful until you look at how they come up with it.

I truly wish they would open their eyes. I just can't see them coming up with a playoff system that would make enough schools happy with the profits they would be getting when compared to how the current bowl system works.

Case in point: There is a 6-6 team playing a bowl that will get over 5 million bucks but they would not be in a sweet 16 type play off system.

I agree, the current college football end game is broken.

I guess I'll post my .02 cents in here as a Penn State student.

I'm sure all of you know about the recent scandal that has effected our school. The past month has been very hard as you can see by our two most recent losses to Nebraska and Wisconsin. The day of the Nebraska game, Beaver Stadium had a level of emotion and power that I hadn't felt all season. I was standing in the S-zone behind the south goal post and just looking at everyone wearing their blue in support of Child Abuse Awareness was very touching. People were in tears and there was so much energy.

The game wasn't about the game that day. It wasn't about the fact that it should have been Joe Pa's last home game (even though there were Joe Pa chants) and it really wasn't even about football. After our darkest week, we finally came together. There were so many different emotions floating around campus and it was really hard to focus on anything other then what was being said by the media about the scandal. After the vigil and the game we finally realized that the actions of one man can not change who we are. We Still Are Penn State.

So, now that the season is over, we are left with the TicketCity Bowl. While I do think that going 9-3 deserves a better bowl, I do understand that our schedule this year was not as challenging as other schools that got higher bowls then we did. I personally think that Houston will be a very challenging opponent and Penn State should be honored to play them. I think as long as our defense comes to play, we will come out on top but the players really need to show a little more then our horrendous loss at Wisconsin. That was terrible.

WE ARE

Lenny, the students of Penn State have nothing to be ashamed of. The heinous behavior of sandusky and the lack of action by the school's leadership is not the actions of the young men and women that attend. I feel sorry for every student that has to deal with this and more so for the victims.

Gool luck in your bowl game.

WE ARE

Well said!

Very well stated.

Thank you. I just feel that the media has made us out to be bad people. I can tell you that the reasons that students reacted the way they did was because of the media. As a Penn State student I have the upmost respect for Joe Paterno and my University and the media seemed to make everyone believe that Joe Pa was the one that did this to the children. I read the grand jury report and while I think that Joe Paterno could have done more, I think he did was right. Every ounce of good that he did for this University evaporated when this story broke and I think that's why so many students were so upset. We understand how bad this situation. We understand that people were going to be asked to resign or get fired but we never thought Joe Pa would get fired. The other part that we still don't understand is how Tim Curley, the ex Athletic Director is still on administrative leave when he played a bigger role then Joe Pa.

Things have calmed down here on campus. The news trucks that once resided on College Ave. are now gone. The thing that gets me about the whole situation is that no one is charged with any crimes yet people were being fired. What if it turns out that Sandusky never did any of these things (I think he did) but what if he didnt. Then people were wrongly accused and fired for something that wasn't true. I just hate how the media made us out to be such bad people.

Well here are two videos. The first one is based on the Chrysler Eminem commercial:

How good is he really? Cam Newton at QB last year--not exactly a difficult job. Give him the ball and tell him to make some plays.

Yes, we beat Arkansas last year. That game happened, just like USC is the National Champ from that year Reggie Bush was there. USC were champs that year and Bush was the Heisman winner, period. The Buckeyes beat Arkansas last year, period. You can say it was vacated, whatever makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but the games were played.

As for this game, I never expected to win. This 'Fickel' year will get filed with the cooper years. Just as I'm sure you have filed the 0-10 season the gaytors had in 79' or whatever season that was long enough ago that you are old enough to remember, but I wasn't. (Did you like that subtle slam on your advancing years? 8p) Thank goodness Fickel is gone (sort of), thank goodness a new OC is coming to town and we can move on with a new era of Buckeye Football.

.....and to get to this game for a second.....it was a special teams that did it. The gaytors offense is nothing to write home about, nor is their defense because if our brain-trust OC would have stuck with Boom Heron for the majority of the game, we win.....but no, he just had to run his veritcal passing game without our best TE and a freshman QB. What an idiot.

At 6-6, neither team should have been playing on a New Years Day bowl game...period. It is all about the money anymore I'm afraid.

Look, if you think Tressel covered up the infraction, you are a fool. Tressel told his superiors what Pryor (and others) did. If you think for a second he didn't turn it in because he "didn't know" I have some ocean front property in North Dakota for you. He told the University Athletic Department, they knew, they just didn't turn it in. But when the IRS let the University know what they had found they had to tell the NCAA about it and then they set Tressel out to take the fall. If they don't, the consequences would have fallen on the entire athletic department instead of just the football program. The entire situation makes me sick because the athletic department (and I fear most athletic departments) would do the same thing over again to cover their arses (and ultimately their bottom line). All of this over some tattoos and some material items that were given to them.........(where is the little vomit smilie when you need it).

Nonetheless, Tressel knew they were in violation of NCAA rules and should have at least suspended the players involved, which he decided not too.....

I guess it comes down to a decision to turn your boss in or not.............

In the words of Jules from Pulp Fiction, "it's not the same ball park, it's not even the same @$&?@& sport".

I also doubt Tressel witnessed the "crime", (giving away something that was given to you....if that is a crime), but the two violations really have nothing in common other than they were college football programs. I REALLY doubt anybody's life was destroyed because of a bad tattoo deal. I don't see how you can compare these two at all and the punishment that will be levied against Penn state compared to that of OSU should reflect how different these are.

I didn't even watch. I played Metal Gear on my PS1 after I got home from my soccer game. I flipped over to watch the kid from VT miss the FG in OT and watched as Fred Flintstone waddled onto the field.....then flipped back to my PS1 game. The outcome of the game was disappointing as I would have liked to see meatchicken lose, but I really didn't care to watch.

C'mon Man - What I am referring to is that Tressel received an e-mail about the infraction. Had he come forth and reported the incident to the NCAA and suspended the players involved he would still be the head coach at OSU. It's hard for me to believe that Tressel wasn't part of the cover up of "Tatoo Gate" --- :D

It was an ugly game. Michigan didn't win it, VT lost it. Denard is an exciting player to watch... when he runs the ball. Whenever he drops back to pass, I cringe. His strategy seems to be just throw the ball up in the air and hope that a Michigan guy catches it. He got lucky last night.

Still, they beat the Suckeyes in November, the Suckeyes lost to the Gators in their bowl game, and Michigan won their BCS bowl game. Not a bad seaon. :)

It isn't his job to report it to the NCAA, it is his boss's job. His boss didn't, it became public, and Tressel was set out to take the fall. OK, I thought you were comparing the two infractions with respect to the actions the coaches took. JoePa told his boss and Tressel told his boss. When Tressel's boss didn't do anything about it, that was Tressels boss's decision. When JoePa told his boss and his boss DIDN'T do anything, he should have gone over his boss's head and told authorities. Tressel did his job, then took the fall for his boss's poor decision.....which in my eyes is the problem with this whole situation. The University should have stood by Tressel, taken their medicine and let Tressel's BOSS go......but they didn't.....hence my saltiness and disgust and sorrow that Tressel is gone. :(

I'll give you the 'Tressel didn't suspend his players' point, however if he suspends his players doesn't that bring suspicion to something wrong? That would put him in a tough spot for sure. No matter how you slice it, Tressel was at the will of his boss because no matter what he does with this, trouble brews. And really, if a coach turns a player in for stuff like this, that ruins a player / coach relationship for the future. If the AD turns them in, the coach player relationship remains intact.

I would agree with that, but they didn't face a team with a good offense....last night or in the previous meeting. It would be interesting to see them face a potent offense like Oklahoma State. That would erase any real questions about this championship, instead all we have now are ??????????????????????'s

So did they tap into the bama soccer team to improve their kicking game?

Alabama proved they were the better team. A very impressive defense for sure. LSU had an awesome year and, although they appeared to not show up last night, I think a lot of that had to do with 'Bama's D. And Alabama's offense put up some decent numbers, they just didn't punch it in--but 380-some yards against LSU is nothing to sneeze at. Their offense just doesn't jump out at you like Oregon or OK St. Either way, for the system we have, best team won in 2011 (or '12, however you look at it).

Not that KU is a football school at all, but it was only 5 years ago that we won the Orange Bowl. Since then, it's been downhill ever since. Apparently there's something wrong with making your kids bear crawl on 140* turf, so Mangino (the human garbage disposal) got the boot, and a high school assistant coach (Turner Gill) landed the job. On the bright side, at least our Athletic Department is paying 3 coaches at the moment... including the one we gave 6 million dollars to just to go away. Ahhhh, I can smell success already. At least we have another fat coach... the last one won us a few games!
