The only reason the SEC players stay all for years is that they will take a pay cut when they enter the NFL.

I think what people are starting to notice now is that the spread offense is just ineffective against bigger schools such as the SEC and now the big name players/recruits are realizing that the traditional offense and defense (SEC) will prepare them better for the NFL.

So not claiming the SEC as the best conference, it's just the choice for the time being. Which made my last year in college pretty awesome.

Good offense. Defense is the big concern. I wasn't encouraged by what I saw Saturday.

I said the same thing but my buddy the HS football coach said the D is fine. I think UM stopping the run is going to be a major issue and when they finally decide to put 7 or 8 in the box it will cost them dearly because of the undersized and not overly quick secondary. We will see.

I also hope Tate Forcier doesnt turn out to be a whiner because he is now listed as #3. He had more fumbles and turnovers last year than Stevie Wonder on a merry go round.

OSU at Alabama will be a game to watch this week for sure along with UM v ND.

Na, no chip. I watched in pure agony for over a decade while john cooper would have great team after great team, and then go into the meatchicken game and drop a load on the field and lose each year. It was so frustrating to watch and it made me hate michigan even more. Now that they are struggling it is wonderful. When they lose, it makes me feel almost as good as when the Buckeyes win......so maybe there is a chip there. I NEVER root for michigan.....ever. Even when they played southern michigan (aka florida) a few years ago I still didn't root for them...even when they were playing an SEC school. (for the record, there was no winner in that game). When I hear that michigan has lost a game, the first thing I do is call a couple of my friends and we all gloat and laugh. I pull for EVERY Big 10 school except michigan. In fact, on my computer when I type in michigan and don't capitalize the "M", it doesn't even correct me anymore.

OK, so there is a very large and protruding chip there.....but I'm not going to apologize for it. I, along with every other Buckeyes fan, paid for that chip during the cooper years.

They played pretty well, but ultimately we got out-coached. Brewster doesn't have the cojones to let the offense open up a little and use some creative play calling. I could call virtually every play(and I'm no expert)...........and if I can do it, so can the other team. We need to spend the money to get a real coach like they did with the basketball program when they got Tubby Smith.

I would be surprised is if USCe doesn't win the East this year.

As far as the West goes I know we have a tough opponent in Ark this weekend but they need to step up big time from their performance against UGA. Other than the last drive (which was awesome to watch) I don't see them having enough defense to stop us. Our secondary however could be our weak link in our D so Mallet could have a big game. I'm looking forward to it.

None of the major teams are any different and its sad when tuition's rise on students and they pay the head coach 5 million a year. The football programs no longer have anything to do financially with the universities its all about extending the football program and 5% about the university and the scholastics.

Sports do dumb-down the masses and keep the general population fat and drunk......:D

You obviously have no clue on this. Alabama's athletics department takes no public money and gives millions back to the University. No state funds pay for coaches. Alabama football graduates 80% of its players and had 13 graduate students play in the National Championship last year. Our quarterback is a finalist to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship when he completes his masters at the end of this year. Academic achievement is stressed as much at Alabama as on-field achievements. Don't sell these kids short as it is a very demanding life to be a student-athlete.

Colleges: Where the money goes

By Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus

Williams College in Massachusetts charges $41,434, or an inflation-adjusted 3.2 times what it did 30 years ago. The University of Southern California's current tab of $41,022 is a 3.6 multiple of its 1980 bill.

Tuition at public universities, in a time of ailing state budgets, has risen at an even faster rate. The University of Illinois' $13,658 is six times its 1980 rate after adjusting for inflation. San Jose State's $6,250 is a whopping 11 times more.

If you look at how that added revenue is being spent, it's hard to argue students are getting a lot of extra value. Why? Colleges aren't spending their extra revenues, which we calculate to be about $40 billion a year nationally over 1980 revenues, in ways that most benefit students.

One thing colleges are spending more on is athletic teams, which have become a more pronounced and costly presence on campuses everywhere. Even volleyball teams travel extensively these days, with paid coaches and customized uniforms. Currently, 629 schools have football teams, 132 more than in 1980. All but 14 lose money.

Found this on Forbes.

Forbes' Most Valuable College Football Teams
Ten college football programs last year brought in at least $45M in revenues, compared to none five years ago, according to Peter Schwartz of FORBES. The Univ. of Notre Dame at $101M is the "most valuable team in college football." The school's athletic department operates "under the umbrella of the university and is not run as its own distinct entity," and as a result a "much higher share of profits are retained by the school for academic use." The Univ. of Texas was the "most profitable team last season, earning $46.2[M], of which $4.7[M] went to academics." Premium and club seating at Texas' Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium generates $12M per year. Of the 20 most-valuable teams, 16 have undergone "major stadium expansions and renovations" over the past ten years, and three others have renovation plans "in the works." Meanwhile, TV arrangements will "only further drive up" team values. Big 12 Conference schools will see a "$16[M] boost in TV revenue" next year from existing deal with FSN and ESPN, with "some schools projected to make as much as $10[M] in 2008, based on thier number of TV appearances and scheduling" (FORBES.com, 11/20)

RK SCHOOL VALUE PROFIT NOTES
1 Notre Dame $101M $45.8M Contributed $21.1M to academic programs last season, more than any other team; $9M from NBC each year
2 Texas $92M $46.2M Earns $12M annually from premium seating, which will rise with 44 new luxury suites and 2,000 club seats in their stadium before kick-off next season.
3 Georgia $90M $43.5M $60.3M in football revenue last season highest in SEC.
4 Michigan $85M $36.2M Will add 83 luxury suites and 3,200 club seats to "The Big House" next year at a cost of $226M.
5 Florida $84M $38.2M Football revenue increased by $11M, to $58.9M, during their national-title season last year.
6 LSU $76M $31.7M Addition of an eighth home game helped LSU's value increase 11% in one year.
7 Tennessee $74M $17.3M* Four Neyland Stadium renovation projects in ten years added more than 10,000 seats and 78 suites.
8 Auburn $73M $33.9M Each season, Tigers home games result in an estimated $50M of incremental spending in Lee County, Ala.
9 Alabama $72M $31.8M Coach Nick Saban's $4M average annual salary is highest in college football history.
10 Ohio State $71M $26.6M At $59.1M, led the Big Ten in revenue last season, but also led all of college football in expenses. Also spent $32.5M on football, 71% of that on game days.
11 Oklahoma $70M $18.5M '04 renovation to stadium, which added 27 suites and 2,500 club seats, leading to increased revenue
12 South Carolina $69M $28.9M South Carolina's value increased 22% over the course of the last year, more than any other team in the top 20.
13 Penn State $69M $29.4M Sells out each game with nation's second-largest stadium
14 USC $53M $13.0M Most-valuable program in the Pac-10 has seen a 7% increase in team value over the past year.
15 Arkansas $53M $19.3M Each home game results in $7.3M of incremental spending throughout the county.
16 Texas A&M $50M $20.5M Projects $9.5M in broadcast revenue next season.
17 Washington $50M $19.9M AD is lobbying for support of expansion to stadium, as well as the creation of a new "Huskies Athletic Village."
18 Nebraska $49M $12.4M Tom Osborne just named new interim AD
19 Michigan State $44M $18.3M Plans to increase contributions to academics as a result of revenue from the Big Ten Network.
20 Wisconsin $43M $14.3M Fell five spots in the rankings owing to a $7.6M drop in football profit since last year.

NOTES: * = Football program was directly responsible for $16.2M in donations to the Volunteer Athletic & Scholarship fund via ticket reservation fees.

METHODOLOGY: Rankings are based on what the football programs contribute to four important beneficiaries: their university (the value of contributions from football to the institution for academic purposes, including scholarship payments for football players); athletic department (the net profit generated by the football program ultimately retained by the department); conference (the distribution of bowl game revenue); and local communities with a vested interest in the team (incremental spending in the county during home-game weekends). The Forbes system weighs those four elements in declining order.

What is a college for anyway to promote education or football? The major programs are only part of these universities in name .

Just as in the nation as a whole the priorities at most have been hijacked.

TX, just because I love to argue with you......

During The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame’s 46th Annual Awards dinner, before a sold out crowd at the Waldorf-Astoria, it was announced by NFF Chairman, Jon F. Hanson, that Craig Krenzel of The Ohio State University was the 2003 Vincent dePaul Draddy Award winner. Often referred to as the “Academic Heisman,” the Draddy Award is given to the nation’s top scholar-athlete and awards a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship. Krenzel is one of 15 national scholar-athletes that were recognized.

Seldom does a player rise to the top of both the academic and athletic world like Craig Krenzel has. His 3.68 GPA in Molecular Genetics proves his academic prowess, and his leadership on the gridiron led Ohio State to their first National Championship in 32 years. Named 2003 Academic All-America of the Year, Krenzel received The Sporting News Socrates Academic Award and recorded a perfect 4.0 in four quarters. A three-time Academic All-BIG TEN Conference selection, he received the Ohio State Academic Achievement Award three times, Dean’s List recognition six times and the Ohio State Exceptional Academic Award 11 times.

Under center, Krenzel led the Buckeyes to a perfect 14-0 season including a victory over top-ranked and defending national champion Miami in the 2003 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, of which he was named Offensive MVP. A Second Team All-Conference pick, Krenzel compiled 2,478 yards of total offense in 2002, 5th best all-time at OSU. Named Archie Griffin Offensive Player of the Year and voted OSU’s Co-MVP for the 2002 season, he ranks eighth all-time with over 4,300 career passing yards. Named 2003 Team Captain, Krenzel is a frequent visitor to the James Cancer Hospital and Children’s Hospital. A speaker at numerous engagements, he also volunteers at a local food pantry, charity fundraisers and during Right To Read Week.

Past recipients of the award include: Brandon Roberts, Washington University in St. Louis (2002); Joaquin Gonzalez, University of Miami (2001); Kyle Vanden Bosch, University of Nebraska (2000); Chad Pennington, Marshall University (1999); Matt Stinchcomb, University of Georgia (1998); Peyton Manning, University of Tennessee (1997); Danny Wuerffel, University of Florida (1996); Bobby Hoying, Ohio State University (1995); Rob Zatechka, University of Nebraska (1994); Thomas Burns, University of Virginia (1993); Jim Hansen, University of Colorado (1992); Brad Culpepper, University of Florida (1991); Chris Howard, U.S. Air Force Academy (1990).

College football playing student-athletes must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), have shown superior academic application and performance, have outstanding football ability as a first team player, and have demonstrated outstanding leadership and citizenship to be eligible for The National Football Foundation’s Scholar-Athlete Awards.

With 119 chapters and over 13,000 members nationwide, The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, a non-profit educational organization, runs programs designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in America’s young people. NFF programs include the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., PLAY IT SMART, The NFF Center for Youth Development Through Sport at Springfield College (Mass.), the NFL-NFF Coaching Academy, and scholarships of nearly $1 million for College and High School Scholar-Athletes.

FWIW TX, I went to Kent State and we all know what a powerhouse the Golden Flashes are in football. Every year I attended KSU, the tuition was raised the maximum amount (5%) it could be raised in a single year. In the 6 years I went to school, the tuition was raised 34% from the time I walked onto campus until the time I walked off campus. Based on the stands in Dix Staduim....they aren't making much on football.

I think TX point is that the as the football programs are so profitable, that money should be sunk back into the school to keep the tuition from rising as much as it has. This would go a long ways to improving the quality of education the STUDENTS get as well as opening up the ability of less forunate to attend college as well. God knows that in iteself would go a long ways toward improving the overall success of the public as a whole...

Without football there would be far less money going into education and about 400 student athletes that were no longer receiving scholarships. Seems to me that's a bad idea. Maybe I am jaded because my two schools are making a profit in the Athletics Departments and donating money back to the overall operating budgets.

I can see if a school was losing money where there could be a problem but you still have to take into account the number of scholarships awarded. Remove that amount from the "loss" and see if it is still a loss.

I know at Alabama all athletic scholarships are full value. The AD has to pay the University the max cost of an education. No discounts at all and since a good portion of the SA's are from out of state that amount is much higher than a normal student tuition would be.

My point was simply that of all the millions taken in (at most universities) a very small amount goes back to the university. Its nearly impossible to decipher the account for all the funds and for the tax exempt status the public (who funds all this) should get a better accounting. Bills have already been floated to remove the non-profit status because they refuse to act as true non-profits.

Tenure would be the next place to improve higher education..........:D

My question is this, they were 5-7 last year losing 5 straight to end the season....they let UMass hang 37 points on them this year.......and that warrants a top 25 ranking? Why? Because they are michigan? I could justify it if they ended the season with a few wins, but they won ONE game in the Big 10 last year and that was against Indiana. If they deserve to be ranked, fine, that just makes THE Ohio State University look better when we spank them at the end of the season, but don't rank them just because who they are.

Hypocritical? How? We beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl really pretty soundly, Pryor has come into his own, we returned the majority of our starters, and we beat #12 Miami and our ranking is unjustified?

I think my argument about meatchicken is more worth debating.

Perhaps this year, but the Buckeyes have been ranked higher than they deserved in years past.... for no reason other than what you're describing UM's ranking on.

I don't understand it either. The people who are ranking them must not have seen Michigan's defense play (see UMass's 37 points). Also, if someone figures out a way to stop Denard Robinson it will get even uglier. In the meantime, that kid is fun to watch.

But I stand by my previous post. Plus... if Michigan beats Ohio Snake University in November, I predict CP will go postal and take a few people with him when he commits hari kari. :D

CP,

You guys have spend a good part of the decade ranked higher than you should have been. No different than ranking Wisconsin 11th. 11th? by who's standard. Michigan being ranked 19th right now is meaningless and probably has more to do with the hype surrounding Denard than anything else. They have to beat some pretty damn good teams in order to stay in the rankings for sure but at least they don't move from 3 to 2 after the sweater vest takes a crap and sees his own corn. Money says the trip to Iowa city will not end well for the f bucks.

I will be the first to admit that Michigan having a 19 ranking is stupid. We don't deserve it, and really won't earn it until we rack up some wins in the big ten. However, the number 2 OSU has is just as big of a joke. The only thing that means is we get to watch the sweater vest parade his team into the national title game only to once again prove the big ten is weak.
In advance thanks for another embarassing performance

Michigan's defense is horrible no one with any common sense will debate that, and no offensive numbers like that are not big ten football but you can allow that many points when you score that many.
Denard will run all over the Spartans next week, and yes Michigan will once again lose to OSU this year but if I were you CP I'd be more concerned with your inflated number 2 ranking then where Michigan and there lack of defense is.

Should meeechigan have to amass 574 yards to win against Indiana? No. Their defense SHOULD be able to stop Indiana...but they couldn't so you had the outcome you had. Indiana continued to score because michigan couldn't stop them.

I watched the OSU Illinois game and if OSU plays like that again, against any other big ten team, they will get beat. Illinois had three facemask penalties in the final minutes that gave the bucks a TD. Without that TD OSU would have been forced to punt and Illinois could have come back fairly easily. CP if you look at the last game realistically I would say both of our teams are overrated. Watching Bama play literally made me gasp. They were head and shoulders above a pretty good Florida team. The thought of a big ten team facing them in the national championship sends shivers up my spine.

Michigan's defense is horrid and they will have to win every game by a shootout in order to post a victory.

Alright folks, I got my MSU tickets in the mail yesterday which makes me look forward to my second favorite past time of watching scores of games pumped directly into my favorite football spot. I know the following teams are represented but did I miss anyone that I can rib throughout the season?:

MSU, IU, Iowa, LSU, Georgia, Purdue, 'Bama, Minnesota?

GO GREEN, GO WHITE!!!!!
Yep, you forgot BSU! (that's Boise State!) Out of obscurity!! The boys are playin good.

With Miami getting wiped on their home field, does strength of schedule push Ohio State to #1? It would appear teams immediately behind them have played tougher schedules thus far.

Go ahead and make us #2.

Everyone knows that Michigan is only half a team right now. Maybe they'll find some defense before next month, but I'm not counting on it. At least the Redskins beat the fudgePackers. Wolverines and Redskins... it's been some rough years lately for this football fan.

That blow on the Rutgers kid just didn't look that bad, very sad but i guess just a freak accident. I don't know much about the physics of the impacts in football but his weight had to have worked against him in that hit because it looked like he hit the shoulder of the ball carrier.

ok still two weeks away for this game but from looking at past scores against comparable teams, I'd be willing to say this is going to be one tough game all around and predict the U of U will come out on top. Utah had a bad game against Wyoming and also played Colorado State in the rain. Next weeks game for the U will determine more of what's to come for TCU. Utah's schedule for the rest of the season is no cake walk and should show they're worthy of the PAC12 invite. At least for every few years they'll put up worthy seasons. ha ha....

Garbage....

Boise State has lost 1 game in the last three years... if they run the table, they DESERVE to be there more than any other team. Major conference or not, the game is played EVERYWHERE with 18-22 year old kids, blue chip recruits or not. Boise State is winning games with 2 star recruits... that should tell us all something. If they are undefeated and not in the NC game, it will be a crying shame.

Totally agree but it will be a shame because they won't get in unless Oregon takes a loss. Which I sure hope happens. SEC champ will be one of the teams for sure - then Oregon or Michigan State if they run the table. Boise State and TCU will get another BCS bowl game but no championship game. I don't agree with it but the big conferences bring in the $$$ and that's what it is all about.

I watched Michigan State live at Northwestern on Saturday... there is no way on Gods green earth that they are a NC contender. I would be surprised if they win their game vs. Iowa. Even if they do, that is not a great football team. And if Auburn loses to Alabama, leaving no undefeated SEC teams, there is NO WAY that a one loss SEC teams gets into the NC when there are other undefeated teams out there. Just my two cents.

You guys ever think that a team like Boise State or TCU will get a shot at the National Title game? I mean, how long do they have to go undefeated or be ranked in the top ten consecutively to get a shot? The game shouldnt be dictated by money. In my opinion they should have a playoff system just like all other collegiate sports. Then there wouldnt be any question of who the best team is. They would prove it on the field and not in the polls!

Forrest-X45
10-26-2010, 04:28 PM
I agree with you guys but all I am saying is how it's going to play out because the big conferences pull all the weight. If the stars align and schools loose from the Pac10, Big10, and SEC then Boise might get in but the computers will always place a one loss SEC champ or one loss Pac10 school in over Boise because of strength of schedule. The WAC is killing Boise and hence their move to the Mountain West but Utah leaving doesn't help their cause.
If it were up to humans Boise might get in this year because of human emotion factor but since the BCS is computer driven history and feeling is not a determining factor.

But I sure wish Boise State could get a shot. They deserve and earned a shot!!

And yes - a playoff system would sure make all of this easier. But how many teams make the playoff? Oh boy......... :D

Actually the PAC10 has a bunch of very good teams this year with the exception of Wazzu. Top to bottom it is a very tough run this year and everyone is beating up on each other. There isn't a gimme game this year except Wazzu and even they have shown some signs of life, granted small signs. ;)
